75% FILMING COMPLETE
Amongst the chaos that comes with times of war, some people were also fighting a personal battle, and though war meant striving for the nation’s freedom; even once the country was secured, some couldn’t be truly free. During WW2 an individual could serve their country, in the most courageous, poignant ways, but once the chaos of conflict was over, the country wanted to return to the ‘norm’; and even the most dynamic of soldiers were imprisoned and stripped of the freedom they’d fought for - all because they loved someone of the ‘wrong’ sex.
It can feel as though homosexuality is a contemporary notion, which it of course isn’t; but history can feel so disconnected from it, that to picture same sex relationships in periods gone by - even up until very recent history, can feel bizarrely jarring, or ‘out of place’.
Recent media has began to shine a light on homosexuality amongst men during historical wars, but when searching for informative memoirs, interviews or publications about British lesbians during these periods, we found next to nothing; and the lack of documentation then said it all - this, is precisely why ‘Wings’ has to be made.
Hopefully most homosexual people of this period were able to find their wings eventually, and leave behind the fear, guilt and judgement that tethered them..
Wings is for those who did, those who couldn’t, and those who that are yet to.
Risks and challenges
We appreciate that the artistic flare of the shots set in 1940s is extremely important (the first half of what we will be filming). We've ensured along that way that we have consulted historians to ensure we don't make an inaccurate slip ups in this section, particularly with costume.
Jamie and Carla have worked together previously, they have had crew shortages due to sickness, and a lack of financial resources before,; yet they have always produced a professional product despite any challenges.
We've been to all locations, and ensured that the scenes can take place, rain or shine, and how we will adapt accordingly.
We have hired a pleasant large property to ensure that cast and crew can stay over if there are long days; in order to make sure that no-one has travel issues or feels too stressed.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
