About

Watching my two children try to put together random objects one day, I envisioned a more uniform system of builders. I drew up the plans, searched and found nothing on the market like it, got a patent pending, researched materials, and considered manufacturing options. When it was all said and done, I realized I could do things with greater cost effectiveness and attention to quality if I created wood pieces myself.

I chose the Boss laser after reading reviews and exchanging phone calls and emails with half a dozen laser manufacturers. I also looked into CNC routers and band saws, but the laser is best. It is ideal for cutting with maximum accuracy a couple of hours at a time before and after work and on the weekends. Depending on my regular work schedule, I should be able to produce between 20 and 50 sets per week.

The 60 watt laser, cooler and stand, with tax and shipping, will run about $6,000. I will also need a PC laptop with enough RAM and processor speed (8 GB and i5) to efficiently run the laser software, a table saw, wood, and beeswax as a sealer. Kickstarter fees and shipping costs for the contributor pre-orders account for the rest of the money.

Risks and challenges

Once the project is successfully funded, my first challenge will be learning to use the laser. This is the main reason I chose Boss over their nearest competitor--online reviews and personal phone calls give me trust in the machine's ease of use and their support. Along with that, I'll be calibrating the laser and prototyping to find the best specific measurements and specific wood for the builders. I've already created four prototype sets--two in plastic and two in wood--so I have a basic feel for what will be required. I've also created several 3D designs accurate to the 1/1000 of an inch in anticipation of finding the perfect fit with wood choices of different thickness. Beyond that, it will just be a matter of finding the laser settings for maximum production while maintaining quality. I hope this will take a couple of days, but I'm prepared to need up to a couple of weeks.

The packaging design is essentially finished, along with the logo. I'll just need to take new photos once I have the final product and tweak a few things to match the size of the box I need.
