About

TRIBALS of KERALA INDIA

Hello everyone my name is Sonny Marcyan.

The project I would like to present to you for funding is an in-depth photo-documentary on the Tribal Peoples of Kerala, India.

Initially, the project will be produced in E-Book format , with the hope of  creating a printed version later depending on the initial response to it. The project will start in the Wayanad area and will take about 10-12 months to complete; 4-6 months of that will be photographing tribals and gathering information on them, the remainder will be for organizing, editing and creating the E-book.

Your funding will go to airfare to and from India, transportation, interpreter/guides, and accommodation for the duration of the trip.

Why this project?

My wife and I lived in Kerala, India from 2007-2010 and it is here that I started to seriously study and learn photography. I love photographing the people of Kerala and their everyday lives. Often I thought of a theme to shoot and it is only recently that I became more aware of the tribals in India and realized I had found a culturally relevant theme and project. The tribals make up a little over 1 percent of the population of India.  Although they are officially recognized by the government of India, they are defined as “Scheduled tribes” and face many difficulties in maintaining and preserving their way of life. The oldest known tribes dating back to 3,000 b.c.e. and throughout history have had to deal with threats to their civilization. They are constantly threatened from politics and developers, through legitimate and corrupt means. The local news media  report their struggles and, although their plight is common knowledge, it simply ends there. A slow cultural genocide is taking place as a result of interests related to politics, greed, and modernization.  One could argue that this is part of their evolution as a culture, but these changes are not of their own choice and their way of life is being dismantled piece by piece. At the Heart of this project, and my main motivation, is to give larger and far-reaching visibility to these people and their plight. During my research on the Kerala tribals, I found mostly academic books and studies which, while they have their place, do not give the people enough presence.  They are dry and include very few photos. In order to convey a real sense of the life and culture of these people, and to raise a greater awareness of them, they need to be shown where they live and how they live. I believe that my project will work toward giving them a presence and face that I have yet to see. This is my artistic and humanitarian aspiration; to create a photographic document  of a little recognized people and their culture, in their environment, from an honest, caring and intimate perspective.

Please go to my website page dedicated to this project to learn more about them and me. www.marcyanphotography.com

Here are a couple of images that I took in India to give you a sense of the beauty of the people of Kerala and of my photographic approach.

I Thank You in advance for your support of the arts.

Sincerely, Sonny
