Camp Weedonwantcha is a webcomic created by cartoonist Katie Rice. Katie has worked in the animation industry for almost 15 years, and has been making webcomics since 2008. Katie also appeared as a contestant on the Penny Arcade-produced reality show Strip Search, where Camp Weedonwantcha was originally created.
Camp Weedonwantcha tells the story of a summer camp where kids are dropped off... and never picked up again. The comic begins shortly after the arrival of Malachi, Weedonwantcha's newest camper, who's finding it a bit difficult to adjust to life at camp...
Luckily he's got his new friends Brian and Seventeen to help him get used to the place.
Along the way, you'll get to know some of the other campers, and learn about their past and how they ended up at Camp Weedonwantcha.
Drawn by Katie Rice, and written in collaboration by Katie Rice and Adam Wallander, Camp Weedonwantcha uses a mix of one-shot, gag-style comics and longer, multiple page arcs to explore all of the stuff kids go through as they grow up. It's funny, scary, sad, and hopefully evocative of emotions and experiences you encountered in your younger days.
The goal of this Kickstarter is to raise funds to produce 2,000 softcover copies, and a small run of Kickstarter-exclusive hardcover copies, of CAMP WEEDONWANTCHA: VOLUME 1, a 150 page, full-color book collecting the first year+ of Camp Weedonwantcha comics. All of these comics are done and available to read right now at CampComic.com!
If you've already read the comics online, don't worry! The book will feature never-before-seen content, such as concept art and a brand-new book-exclusive storyline about Malachi's first day at camp.
Self-publishing can be a very expensive undertaking, and your support will make a world of difference! Large-scale, high-quality printing requires a significant amount of upfront costs. Reaching the funding goal will allow us to create a better book than would otherwise be possible.
We really want you to feel that your pledge was worth your while, so we're offering a whole bunch of items to go along with the book!
We've even got some exciting limited rewards, including a personalized online avatar drawing, a cameo appearance as a camper in a Camp Weedonwantcha comic, and a hand-drawn (marker/mixed media) recreation of a Camp Weedonwantcha comic of your choice!
UPDATE: We have added a new tier (at the $350 level) which gives you the chance to have your very own cat appear as a Camp Weedonwantcha feral! On top of that, Katie will do a digital drawing of your cat!
Take a look at this table for a complete breakdown of what you'll get at each reward level.
Update: Thanks to the overwhelming generosity of the backers, we can now offer up some Stretch Goals!
For those of you who have been asking to purchase an extra Darkplace Brian pin, you’re in luck! You can now add on a second pin to your order!
To do this, you must have already pledged at a level that includes a pin (all tiers $75 and up) and follow these steps:
1) Click on the “Manage My Pledge” button above. (Note: If you have yet to back the project, the button will say “Back This Project.”)
2) Increase your pledge amount by $15. So if, for example, you backed at the $75 level, you will increase your pledge to $90.
3) After the funding period for the Kickstarter has ended, you will receive a survey in which you can add a note mentioning that you added on an extra pin.
Again, please note that you must back at a reward level of at least $75 before you can add on a pin. Lower reward levels are not eligible to add on a pin. Also, you can only add on a maximum of ONE additional pin.
Risks and challenges
As with most projects, the biggest risk will be delays, specifically during the printing of the book. However, we vow to maintain complete transparency and provide consistent updates with regard to the book's production. We are also very lucky to be in the position of having a great network of professionals that can help us deal with any issue that may arise.
We have also been careful to create reward tiers that offer items we have experience producing, and will be working with a professional fulfillment service to ensure delivery goes as smoothly as possible.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
