Transmedia. It’s a storytelling devise defined by what we call a Story Universe—in our case the Vicky Vixen Universe. It has its own unique set of traits and rules that influence the stories we create, and the way we deliver those stories to you. For instance, we have created an awesome storyline about Vicky Vixen’s history as a Cold War spy operating behind the Iron Curtain. Another storyline begins in a parallel universe with characters traveling through portals to our universe. Each unique story can be delivered on a different platform such as mobile devises (smart phones and video tablets), print (comics or graphic novels), video games, web series, etc.
So, even though each story product we produce is unique unto itself, and does stand alone on its own merits, the influence of its originating universe is present in the quality and intent of each project. What’s cool about this is that the stories naturally interweave with each other, giving fans who explore them a richer experience that builds on the original project.
A popular example is the HEROES transmedia project. Most people know about the popular television show. But did you know that there were at least another 2 dozen projects running simultaneously that took their cues from the Heroes Universe? There was an Alternate Reality game, character blogs, a graphic novel and more. (Check out the case study on Vimeo: http://vimeo.com/8700233)
