The GOOD NEWS - The UnPopular Pea (& Carrot) has been privately fully funded!
THE SAD NEWS - I am ending this Kickstarter campaign.
BACK TO THE GOOD NEWS - You can still get the books and t-shirts on the website!
So what happened? Before I launched Kickstarter, I was talking with private parties to fund the printing of The UnPopular Pea (& Carrot)... well, I found the perfect match and now we are going forward! I debated about keeping Kickstarter live, but all in all, it has become too messy. I have received a lot of feedback with the consensus that the program is too confusing, and I found myself selling more pre-orders in person than online. I believe Kickstarter is a TERRIFIC company and program, but ultimately, it just was not the best fit for my project. When I received the offer to have my printing independently funded, I knew it was the right choice. Thank you Kickstarter and all who have stuck with me! This has all been a very big learning experience. There should be far less kinks in my next book launch (yes, there's another book in the making!).
Thank you everybody!
ABOUT the book
The UnPopular Pea (& Carrot) is a children’s book about eating healthy. Its main purpose is to educate children about food and the enormous impact it has on your body and life. Through an illustrated, rhyming tale about an unpopular pea and carrot, it explains what "real" food is. It shows the difference between candy and carrots and gives kids insight on how to pick healthy foods.

ABOUT the mission
I wrote and illustrated this book for my nephew, Van. He is 7 years old, growing up, trying to understand this food-crazy world. I want to help him and his generation understand it. It’s confusing enough as an adult. As a kid – well, that’s why I decided to write a book about it.
Food can be confusing, ESPECIALLY as a kid. You’re still contemplating your belly button. You eat whatever mom and dad give you. Your bones, organs and brain are growing and absorbing everything – food and knowledge. You don’t become a healthy adult on donuts and candy. Food needs to become a priority again. Every child deserves the knowledge and ability to have a healthy life. As the "big kids," it’s our job to show them how to do it.
Obesity in children is
becoming "normal." It is a scary situation that is confusing,
intimidating… and easily reversible. It starts with education. If a child is
taught to eat healthy – they will! It’s as simple as that. But we (the big
kids) must build the drive for them to do so…by eating healthy ourselves and
surrounding them with a positive, healthy environment. And this happens one
choice at a time.
Yes, to apple.
No, to cupcake.
Yes, to hide-and-seek.
No, to Sparkly-Donut-World video game.
You get the drift. As adults, we know what’s good for us. But with our crazy busy schedules, supermarkets full of 1-minute boxed dinners, and a screaming child that is begging for donuts and candy… I get it. Life (and kids) can be demanding. But it's really not complicated or as hard as it seems. Teach your little fisher how to fish (metaphorically). Bring them into the kitchen, show them how it's done. Show them the importance of eating healthy. Sugar-infused birthday parties, school lunches and media commercials will not faze them. Your job will become a breeze. Then sit back with your carrot juice, wait for dinner to be served, and get ready to be impressed. Kids are amazing!
ABOUT the goods
*PLEASE NOTE: Images below are mock-ups, final products will look similar - only better! :)
Below are MOCK UPS of what the t-shirts will look like. I guarantee you will love them - they are super comfy and very high quality. These aren't your typical stiff, starchy tees. I have hand picked out the awesomely-comfy material from American Apparel. All shirts will be hand screen-printed by the amazing folks at 8/7 Central - a very talented design and printing studio out of Des Moines, Iowa.
The Adult shirt (unisex) is being printed on 100% sheer jersey cotton. I chose it for it's slightly looser neck line (unlike most cheap tees that choke you out!) and it's comfy, relaxed material. They are pre-shrunk and laundered so you don't have to worry about them shrinking!
The Kid's shirt (unisex) is being printed on 50/50 Poly-Cotton, made with combed-cotton. I chose this one for it's super-soft feel and vibrant green color!
Who wants to be unpopular? I think you do. Often times, the "unpopular" thing to do… is the right thing to do. And also, a very necessary thing to do. It takes guts. It makes you feel awkward. You’re outside the line, outside your (and everyone else’s) comfort zone. But that’s where the magic happens. The "unpopular" path is a hard one. But stick with it. Other brave "unpopular" minds looking for you, and they need you. (How convenient would it be if there was T-shirt to help them find each other? Oh wait a minute…) Stay true to your vision and mission – it’s ok to be unpopular. Together, we will make amazing things happen!
Risks and challenges
I have already written, illustrated and formatted the book. No surprises there.
Now I just need enough backing to take it to a professional printer. I have chosen to work with a printer in the USA for local and quality reasons. Assuming all goes well in the printing process, the rest should be smooth sailing! The same goes with the merchandise - all the goods have been designed and are ready to be created, it's just a matter of making sure the quality comes out as expected - which I believe will be superb!Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
