Example Of Tap Score Reporting
What's In Your Water?
Trust in American water quality is at an all time low.
New research shows as many as 1-in-4 Americans are drinking tap water with chronic chemical contamination. These are contaminants which can poison you over 5, 10, or 20 years as they accumulate in your brain and body. Just this year, the American Society of Civil Engineers graded US Water with a D. Why?
In large part it's due to failing pipes, under-funding and poor water quality testing. Today' s well owners and utility customers are exposed to commonly known risks such as:
- Lead (neurotoxin)
- Chromium (carcinogen)
- Chlorine-based byproducts (carcinogens)
- Arsenic (carcinogen)
- DDT and PCBs (endocrine disruptors) …
And then there are the others, newfangled chemicals like estradiol or 1,2,3-trichloropropane which appear in our water and are likely very dangerous, but remain poorly understood and too costly to regulate.
Despite these growing risks, we have done very little to empower ourselves as individuals. We are busy at home and at work, too busy to study health statistics, chemical engineering and laboratory testing methods.
That’s why we built Tap Score.
The first home water service that affordably tests, explains and matches your contamination issues with cost minimizing treatment solutions optimized for your needs.
Which Package Is Right For You?
Determining which are the right chemicals to test for in your home can require hours of your time and frustrating research. Therefore, we prepared easy, optimized testing packages designed to conveniently fit your needs. Whether you're drinking from a private well, shared well, or from infrastructure provided by a public utility system, there is a Tap Score package perfectly designed for you.
If you don't feel ready to decide what chemicals to test for, we encourage you to select the $30 Reward. This sends you a Ready-To-Test Package which you can activate online, anytime with the selection of chemicals you want to test for. You'll save $30 on anything you choose.

We are offering two Add-On options for people concerned about pharmaceuticals and bacterial contamination of their drinking water. If you want to include either of these additional options with your Tap Score Package, simply add the corresponding testing amount (below) to your Reward Pledge. Add-Ons will be shipped in separate boxes.
Pharmaceuticals Found In Water
In recent years, there has been a significant increase in the concentrations of man-made pharmaceutical compounds found in our environment and in our water. Streams, groundwater wells, treatment facilities and indeed kitchen faucets now often contain inorganic chemicals and steroids that come from our increasing use of medicines like ibuprofen or personal care products and birth control. While public health research into the chronic effects of these issues is still in it’s early stages, we wanted to make an easy water testing solution available to those of you who are particularly concerned about pharmaceutical waste products. The Pharmaceutical Contamination Test includes:
Bisphenol A Ibuprofin Trimethoprim Naproxen Acetaminophen Ciprofloxacin Sulfamethoxazole 17-beta-Estradiol Caffeine Fluoxetine Gemfibrozil Triclosan Estrone Diclofenac Sodium Primidone Carbamazepine Erythromycin Testosterone Progesterone 4-tert-Octylphenol 17-alpha-Ethynylestradiol 4-para-Nonylphenol.
Bacteria Found In Water
Another common concern, particularly among folks with private wells or septic systems is that of bacterial contamination. Harmful pathogens are most commonly found in areas with old infrastructure, livestock, septic tanks and dense population. Organisms living in your water can cause minor or serious health impacts. Proper testing for pathogenic contamination requires incubation, so we prepared logistics for shipping your results to a laboratory overnight where more professional testing and analysis. DIY bacterial testing kits are not as reliable as lab testing.
The Bacterial Contamination Test includes either total coliform or HPC testing. We'll help you choose which option is right for you depending on the type of contamination you are concerned about.
What People Are Saying
"We’ve tested our water every year for 20 years, and the Tap Score was the first test I can honestly say I fully understood."
– Claire H. in Connecticut
"My local utility had an incident that exposed our city to dangerous amounts of Trihalomethanes in our tap water. I bought Tap Score to make sure my new treatment system is doing its job."
– Paulette L. in Puerto Rico
“It tasted great, but we’d had no idea there were heavy metals in our drinking water."
– Samuel in California
“Honestly, I went into this as a skeptic because we’ve been through so many shady water testing services. When I got my Tap Score report it was beautiful though, and the conversation I had with your staff was informative and SO so helpful. You probably saved us from spending a fortune on a Reverse Osmosis treatment we didn't need... and I learned about chloramines! Thank you John and Casey!”
– Laura in Los Angeles
“Lots of bells and whistles, but worth it, great test."
– Tom in Houston
Note: Tap Score is not the cheapest water test money can buy, but for a little bit more, it is 100% guaranteed to save you a lot of time and money in testing, interpreting and treating your water (many people overspend on treatment).
Compared To Test Strips
Color changing water quality test strips operate on debunked science, detecting only a small fraction of harmful contaminants and often only at levels considered to be industry-regulated health risks. Tap Score covers more than 100 regulated and emerging contaminants with professional laboratory accuracy and reliability.
Compared To Environmental Labs
Most environmental testing laboratories prioritize large and more lucrative civil and industrial projects. They don’t offer clear results, treatment matching, or support for home and family customers. Many of them are engaged in price-warfare, trying to offer the cheapest possible service. Tap Score offers much more, designed with your health, budget and your understanding in mind. We’ve prepared tailored water testing packages that will save you time and money towards figuring out what to test for and how much to pay for treatment.
The Only Water Test With Personal Health Data
Billions of national research dollars get spent on toxicology and epidemiological health analysis, but none of the other available water testing services utilize that insight. While many labs will compare your results against US Government Maximum Contaminant Levels (MCLs), such comparisons are not ideal:
- US EPA standards are not as strict as Health Goals set by the medical research and public health community.
- US EPA standards are optimized to make public water system treatment costs affordable for water utilities, not simply for personal health.
- US EPA standards have been really slow at adopting standards for new and emerging chemicals.
Only Tap Score includes personal health data based on the latest toxicological evidence from the medical and scientific community.
The Only Water Test With Unbiased Treatment Matching
There are (fortunately?) 1000's of water treatment products available online and in stores like Home Depot. However, choosing the right filter, membrane, or chemical treatment system can quickly become a messy engineering challenge and an expensive endeavor. Unlike other water testing service, Tap Score matches your water quality results and your personal preferences against the certified treatment claims made by the National Sanitation Foundation and Water Quality Association. You’ll receive an unbiased personal list of the ideal treatment systems for your home and water, saving you tons of time, money and headache.
The Only Water Test That Stays Fresh
Finally, Tap Score is not a static service.
After you receive your results we’ll continue to update your online Tap Score Report with changes in health research, treatment recommendations and local water risks. We are the only water testing service to offer this feature and we can do it because we have a brilliant team of Berkeley trained Physicists, Data Scientists, and Engineers.
Tap Score Product Development
Two years ago, our team was busily focused on building a new arsenic treatment technology, with electro-chemistry patents licensed from the University of California Berkeley. We were spending a lot of time travelling around the State of California and visiting low income areas with arsenic contaminated groundwater that they are unable to afford treatment for. (This is a well-documented challenge for US water, and a long-standing issue which thousands of US communities face.)
On the road, we discovered that almost all community leaders we met with and their constituents had very little idea for what was in their water.
Simply stated, they struggled to understand their water chemistry and what it meant for their health.
This realization (coupled with some good advice from John's father) lead to a shift in team priorities. We began interviewing not just about arsenic treatment but about water quality in general.
We asked about folks about what they understood their water health; the issues they had with prior water quality tests and their experiences in purchasing new water treatment (for home and for community-scale).
We found that most everyone we spoke to, even those living in communities with well-known water issues, struggled to understand the chemistry and underlying health risks present in their water quality reports.
This surveying work was helped in large part by incredible work by UC Berkeley and Boston University graduate and undergraduate students who conducted interviews around the state (in English and Spanish). The research lead to our original designs for Tap Score, a water testing service designed for clarity, convenience and finding easier solutions.
Our work with arsenic treatment technology is on-going, but we felt like the ubiquitous benefit of something like Tap Score made it an ideal focal point for our limited resources.
We now need your involvement and the power of crowds, to spread word and start sending out Tap Scores. We plan to learn a lot from your experiences with Tap Score, and we guarantee that every backer will receive the most informative water quality report ever offered.
After 1 year of hard work and 1000's of volunteered hours by industry and health professionals, we've developed the first Full Tap Score Testing and Reporting Product.
We have successfully shipped working Tap Score prototypes, nationwide to 100+ homes.
A worldwide network of citizen scientists empowered to test and understand our local environment and personal health.
Crowdfunding is awesome. Together we are build something important for our health and for our collective environment. We are on Kickstarter to push the limits of traditional public health data and begin a simple service that empowers everyone to affordably test and understand their world, even from the comfort of home.
The vision is to provide everyone access to easy, clear and actionable environmental and health testing, and this Kickstarter invites you to be part of this movement.
This Is An Informational Test
This testing program is for personal informational use only and is not meant to be used for satisfying State or Federal reporting requirements. Such tests are much more expensive and require in-person visits by engineering or lab personnel to your home. If you need your results certified for regulatory purposes, contact us and we’ll help you arrange it.

Risks and challenges
Our team has successfully delivered on two prior Kickstarter campaigns and one prior Indiegogo campaign. We have solid experience fulfilling our promises and (mostly) on time. Going into this campaign we spent a solid year perfecting Tap Score because of the serious scientific and health ramifications of our work. To that end, our stellar team practiced the art and science of sending glass containers around the country and connecting them reliable with environmental testing laboratories. We have clearly demonstrated that our process works. We can ship customers fresh sampling containers safely and include the proper shipping labels to return the filled samples back to our laboratories. And, we have a QA/QC system in place to ensure that chemical data is properly uploaded and conveyed to our customers. Additionally, we have neatly integrated cutting-edge health data and water treatment matching algorithms for a beta-list of existing customers. Having now proven the functionality of our entire procurement and execution plan, our biggest remaining challenge, as with any Kickstarter project, will be handling the potential for a larger volume of orders all at the same time. Indeed, we have prepared a system for managing many many orders if the situation arises :)Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
