Hi, and welcome!

Since early 2010, I have been working on a series of figurative, light-driven oil paintings that explore ideas of place and belonging, innocence and memory, love and loss, longing and separation.

Please visit my website, www.summerbrennanstudio.com, to view examples of my past work, and to see a sneak peak at the current series.

I am very excited about the paintings completed so far, but I need your help to cover the necessary studio and supply costs to get the series finished and ready to present to interested galleries and promoters!

In Swedish, the word "smultronstället", literally "the place of wild strawberries" , connotes a secret place, overlooked by others. It is a discovered treasure whose magic transcends the ordinary and frees itself from the bewilderment of the outside world.

During the summer of 2009 I spent time on the small island of Orust off the western coast of Sweden, and these images are borne out of my experiences there.

The project consists of approximately fifteen paintings, ranging in size from 14"x10" to 60"x48". Most are quite massive. While some paintings are completed and others are in process, I still have a few months of consistent work to go to get them finished and ready to show. And then there will be a big party. And you're invited. And it will be awesome.

I am so excited about how these paintings are turning out that I can hardly sleep at night. As in, I'm a teenager and madly in love for the first time, I'm about to go on my dream vacation, some benevolent stranger just paid off all my student loans EXCITED.

This work is being done NOW and will be ready to show by May 2011.

Earnest and nostalgic, sometimes awkward and often beautiful, for me my paintings are a celebration, a meditation, an exorcism, a love letter. I hope that you will consider helping me to complete this series.

What or where is your smultronstället?

Subjects of the paintings include a party seen from the outside, enchanted glades of brambles, a house, bright blue twilights, luminous foliage, tables with mid-process blackberry pies, a man in a kitchen, a figure in a boat, glistening waters, mysterious shadowy rooms in a summer house, a maypole, and more.

OTHERS WAYS TO PARTICIPATE:

- Design me a new website! Simple and clean. I will give you art in return! I am in desperate need of one but am nearly computer illiterate. -Come to my studio, have some tea with me, and talk to me about a place that carries special significance for YOU. If it's alright, I may film and or photograph you during or after our conversation. This will be the seed of a piece on the same theme. -*NEW* Follow me and the project on Twitter http://twitter.com/summerbrennan, Facebook http://www.facebook.com/pages/Smultronstallet-or-Where-Wild-Strawberries-Grow, or YouTube http://www.youtube.com/summerbrennan

You are my hero. No, really. You are so much my hero that in fact, I will don a John Cusack-style trench coat and boombox serenade you at your home or office, blasting the song "Heroes" by David Bowie. Or any other song. Backup dancers will accompany me. In Costume. Unless you ask me not to do this. In addition this ridiculous display, I will paint you a smaller scale (less than 20"x30") commissioned oil painting. As an alternative, I will offer donors at this level any reward listed in lower giving levels, or not one but TWO 48"x36" prints of paintings from the series. Bravo, you.

A large commissioned oil painting on the subject of your choosing. This will involve planning sessions, visits, any "from life" sitting that may be necessary, and the execution of the piece. This process should take between two to three months. By the way, you're awesome. (This level also entitled you to one surprise but utterly amazing performance stunt performed in your honor and tailored to your personality. You'll love it.)
