About

Yuan Shao surveyed his great army.  Thousands of horses bearing armored riders stood at attention, ready to charge into combat at their commander's signal.  The war drums played a low, steady cadence, never wavering or changing tempo.  Yuan's tactical advisor, Tian Feng, had prepared a few surprises for their enemies, but the great commander hoped victory would be quick, requiring nothing more than the swift advance of his mounted warriors.

Across the river, the forces of Liu Biao stood quietly within the small town they had vowed to protect.  A few earthen hills and hastily-constructed wooden palisades would be the only way to slow the horses of the Yuan army, but Liu Biao prayed destiny was on his side.  His keen archers checked their bows, preparing to fire as the Yuan army drums picked up in volume and pace.  The massive army surged forward toward Xin Ye village, quickening as it advanced.  Yuan Shao's standard was in the center of the front line of the speeding cavalry.  "The dead center," Liu mumbled, under his breath.  "ARCHERS!  Go for Yuan Shao!  Volley on my command!"

The horses smashed into the palisades, turning much of it into matchsticks, but hundreds of mounts were impaled on the sharpened ends.  Throngs of cavalry sped through the maze of dirt walls, faster than the Liu Biao advisors thought possible, the indomitable Yuan Shao at their head.

As throaty Yuan Army war shouts pierced the chill morning air, Liu Biao surveyed his enemy one last time before the fateful encounter.

"ARCHERS...  FIRE!"  Thousands of arrows and bolts filled the sky, arching toward the advancing Yuan cavalry.

"Destiny," thought Yuan Shao, "always requires some blood."

Assemble your forces to conquer a kingdom!

Huang is a competitive card game based on the Three Kingdoms Period of China.  In it, you can be one of 6 Lords trying to thwart your enemies and become the next ruler of this vast land.  Powerful warlords threaten with brute force, intelligent tacticians overcome opponents with sneaky strategies, and the land of China becomes a battlefield for total domination.

The 6 factions are the Northern Horse Regiments of Yuan Shao, the Wei Invincible Armies of Cao Cao, the Wu Marine Brigades of Sun Jian, the evil despot Imperial Lethal Legions of Dong Zhuo, the Shu Tiger Forces of Liu Bei, and the Jing Deadly Divisions of Liu Biao.

You must determine who you will send out as a conquering force and who will maintain defense of your kingdom, equip your generals with weapons and items to make them more powerful, and surprise your enemies with devastating tactics.  Each faction box comes with over 250 cards for you to build your own conquering deck.

The greatest warriors and most cunning tacticians are at your disposal:

Liu Biao's Divisions include: Cai Mao, who can lower an opponent's attack strength; Wen Pin, archer extraordinaire; Ji Ling, Chief Defender of the Realm; Pirate Boat reinforcements that patrol the waterways, itching to take down and loot any opponent; many, many more.  Liu Biao's main strategies generally include stalwart defense, exceptional archery, and/or marine tactics.

Yuan Shao: Lord of the Northern Horse Brigades

Yan Liang: General under Yuan Shao

Wen Chou: General under Yuan Shao

Yuan Shang: son and heir of Yuan Shao

Gongsun Zan: Warrior under Yuan Shao

Zhang He: Warrior under Yuan Shao
Zhang He: Warrior under Yuan Shao

Yuan Shao's Regiments include: The powerful White Riders of Gongsun Zan, shock troops on horseback; Wen Chou, sworn brother to Yan Liang and a vicious mounted brawler; Yan Liang, a stalwart cavalry warrior; Zhang He, fast as lightning, and even more aggressive; many, many more.  Yuan Shao typically employs aggression, cavalry maneuvers, and multiple in-battle boosts (Charge, for example) to win.

Lu Bu: Supreme Warrior under Dong Zhuo
Lu Bu: Supreme Warrior under Dong Zhuo

Dong Zhuo's Legions include:  Li Ru, who gives a boost to your warriors during conflict, giving you a greater chance to seize your opponent's territories; Zhang Liao, the protege of Lu Bu, strong, fast, and deadly; Hua Xiong, a giant on the battlefield who wades among troops, ripping and tearing them with his bare hands; Lu Bu, said to be worth one million soldiers in combat; many, many more.  Dong Zhuo overpowers his opponents as the only Lord with 2 maximum powered warriors, plus he uses duels and sneaky strategies that help him reign supreme.

Cao Cao's Armies include:  Xiahou Dun, a halberdier who strikes enemies down in anger; Sima Yi, the great strategist and powerful leader of an elite corps of archers; Dian Wei, the personal guard and muscle-bound protector of Cao Cao; Guo Jia, the tactician that brought Cao Cao victory after victory; many, many more.  Cao Cao usually relies on cunning tactics, supreme archery, and treacherous battlefield actions for victory.

Liu Bei's Forces include:  Zhuge Liang, considered to be the smartest man in the world, a brilliant tactician, politico, and inventor; Zhang Fei, who held Chang Ban bridge against a million Cao Cao warriors; Jiang Wei, the protege of Zhuge Liang, a true triple threat, smart, strong, and a brilliant leader; Guan Yu, the God of War, a deadly fighter swinging a massive blade, fearing nobody; many, many more.  Liu Bei's victory path usually includes many duels, bigger-than-yours warriors, and cunning tactician usage.

Huang Gai, Veteran Warrior of Sun Jian
Huang Gai, Veteran Warrior of Sun Jian

Sun Jian's Brigades include:  Sun Ce, Sun Jian's son and heir, an aggressive, powerful conqueror on the battlefield; Huang Gai, whose loyalty was both unquestioned and unrivaled; Xu Sheng, master strategist, warrior, and general; Zhou Yu, grand commander and tactician for the Sun family; Lu Meng, a dangerously intelligent and powerful warrior; many, many more.  Sun Jian usually wins with a combination of brilliant strategies and unrivaled marine tactics.

Despite the limitless possibilities when building your deck and the infinite ways each game can play out, the mechanics of the game are simple.  Each general in your control has an Attack strength and a Defense strength.  When you're attacking, you use your Attack number.  When someone else is attacking you, you use your Defense number.  When you're dueling, you use the total of both.

Your four provinces, North, South, East, and West, produce money according to the cities within them, which are revealed as the game progresses.  That money can only be spent within its respective Province, making it necessary for you to spread out your most powerful generals for ample coverage of your kingdom.

Every battle is determined by the combined totals of your participating generals' Attack or Defense scores.  Once you have them totaled, roll dice equal to that amount.  Your opponent does the same.  Even a larger, stronger force can lose a battle if the dice are not kind.  These rolls represent your destiny within the game.  The dice rolling to resolve battles is optional.  A simple cumulative total of each side's respective Attack or Defense will suffice if both players agree that they don't want to use dice for battle resolution.  Dice must still be used in duels, and when assigning random statistics, as illustrated on the cards that create these circumstances.

The fact that bigger numbers don't always equal success makes each player really concentrate on making their armies as strong as possible, as there are no guarantees that a slight edge will work.

Some of the Actions available for use in battle:  CHARGE gives one of your attacking generals a boost of two dice to help your army win; VOLLEY allows an Archer unit to single out one opponent and use a coordinated arrow strike to try and defeat him;  DUEL brings your most powerful generals to the forefront of the battle, trying to crush one of your enemy's generals (and army morale) in one single bout of strength.

There are various formations that give your army widely different advantages, like MANTIS, which makes your infantry units more powerful, and SWEEPING CHARGE LINE, which amps up the power of your cavalry units and makes CHARGE more effective.

The available actions to seal a victory in combat are myriad, with some of the more powerful generals able to use actions freely without the use of cards!

To keep the competitors on an even field, they take part in actions simultaneously-ish!  That means that the first player begins the first part of his turn.  The second player then begins the first part of his turn.

Your turn consists of phases.

1.  Expansion Phase.  Draw a new City Card from your Kingdom Deck.  Place it in its corresponding Province; North, South, East, or West.  Once the first player has completed this, the second player does the same.

2.  Destiny Phase.  Draw your Destiny Deck to make 5 Destiny Cards in your hand.  The Action Cards may be used as you see fit.  This deck includes Open Actions (played during your turn), Battle Actions (played during combat), Events (usually played when drawn, sometimes played when you choose), and Equipment (assigned to your generals).  Events and equipment can only enter play during your Recruitment Phase.  After the first player draws and plays any applicable cards, the second player follows.

3.  Recruitment Phase.  Draw your Dynasty Deck to make 3 General Cards in your hand.  You may recruit any Generals you choose from here, reconfigure your armies, and remove Generals from play you no longer want.  You may also play Events and equip your Generals.  Each General has an assigned duty to your kingdom, either Attack or Defense.  You must assign them according to their duties, making balance a more difficult achievement.  The second player the goes through his Recruitment Phase.

4. Attack Phase. Attack your opponent one time if you choose. (No attacks may be made on the first turn for either player).  After the first player's attack phase is over (including anything that occurs in reaction to his attack phase), the second player begins his Attack Phase.

5.  Discard any cards you do not want to keep, and redraw your Destiny hand to 5.  The second player discards and redraws as well.

6.  Bow to your opponent for a turn well-played.

The winner of a game is the player who has conquered all of his opponent's cities (whether they have any cities left to draw doesn't matter) or the first player to collect enough Fame for a Fame Victory.  The Fame Victory is an optional Victory Condition.  You don't have to use it if you don't want to.

AN UPDATED STYLE IS COMING AFTER THIS WEEKEND!  Due to critique, the layout and style of the cards will be improved to help showcase the art and eliminate needless text.

Wen Chou
Wen Chou

Wen Chou's card shows us the card details.  Like all Generals, he has an Att value (3) on the top left (used alone while attacking an opponent, and in combination with Def in a duel), a Def value (1) on the top right (used when defending, and in combination with Att in a duel), and a cost (3) and unit type (Heavy Cavalry) in the top middle.

A beautiful painting of him battling another warrior is under all that, then his name, and his assignment requirement under that.  As you can see, Wen Chou can only be assigned as an Attacker for your kingdom.  That means he can participate in EVERY attack your kingdom commences, but can only help defend if the particular Province in which he lives is attacked.

Any Special Abilities are listed in the white text box.  As you can see, Wen Chou is friends with Yan Liang, and he receives a bonus when he lives in the same Province as his friend.  The blue box beneath that is for flavor text (not every card has flavor text), and below that you see the designation "UNIQUE".  This designation means that you may only have one (1) Wen Chou in your deck.  A card without that designation can have three (3) total copies in your deck.

Lu Bu, Supreme Warrior under Dong Zhuo
Lu Bu, Supreme Warrior under Dong Zhuo

This is Lu Bu, the most feared man in all of China.  As you see, he has huge statistics, 2 special abilities, a trait that affects all battles in which he participates, and a really bad attitude.

What do you get in a Faction Box?

I hoped you would ask...  Each Faction Box comes with its own group of heroic warriors and cunning tacticians, between 43 Generals for Dong Zhuo to 51 for Sun Jian, unique to each Faction.  They also come with a unique stronghold, 6 - 8 unique cities, and an event (the event's use is optional; it all depends on how you want your deck built) that is completely unique to each Faction.

And then they come with something special on top of all that uniqueness; each Faction comes with a FULL array of equipment, battle actions, turn actions, events, formations, free cities, and free generals you can recruit if you choose.  EVERY BOX CONTAINS EVERY NON-FACTION-SPECIFIC CARD, so you don't have to worry about coming up short on a specific card if you want to build a deck for each of the 6 Factions at the same time.  No more tearing apart a deck to build a different one.

Each faction box comes with approximately 250 cards or more, depending on the faction...

What will your funding help me accomplish?

I already have all the game design finished.  Did you see that?  FINISHED!  It is playtested, ready to go, FINISHED.  This Kickstarter campaign will provide me with the finances to pay artists to give these cards outstanding artwork.  The artwork on this page is a sample of the artwork I am getting.  Amy and Rommel, the artists for these pieces, are exceptional.  Artwork is the only thing this game is missing.  Once the artwork is completed, I am the printer (I have been a professional printer for over a decade, and the cards are very nice) and the distributor, so logistics and coordination will never be an issue.

Funding will also go toward fulfilling all the Kickstarter campaign promises to you, shipping, logistics, everything.

I will advertise on every fansite I can join that is devoted to the Three Kingdoms story and games (there are millions of fans worldwide brought to the story through video games like Dynasty Warriors and Romance of the Three Kingdoms), and even ship promo posters to any gaming retail stores that want to carry the game.

For players who have never played a competitive card game like this, I have a complete strategy guide, available for FREE, that I will post once this game is funded.  The guide bullet points the strengths and weaknesses of each Force, and gives you the complete setup for 2 different, powerful decks with each one.  This guide will reduce the learning curve of HUANG to mere minutes.  Anyone can build a competitive deck immediately out of their order of any deck with no experience!

If we surpass the Funding Goal, there are plenty more things we can add on:

$50,000

At this level, all artwork for the game will be paid for, including expanding the artwork to EVERY card, not just the Generals.

$100,000

It's a mythic number.  But at this level there will be an entirely new Second Edition ready for release far faster than anticipated (the same time as the First Release)...  The Second Edition introduces new Lords and Strongholds, and Experienced versions of some of the First Edition stalwarts, like Lu Bu, Guan Yu, Zhuge Liang, Sun Ce, and many more.  Every Force gets new generals, some are instant heroes, others are great archer fodder, but all make a difference.  This Second Edition will also include new actions, equipment, formations, battle actions, tactics, EVERYTHING!  There will be so many cards in the Second Edition, it will be a stand-alone game all its own, but it's even better when combined with the First Edition.

Risks and challenges

I am the designer and distributor for these cards, unless a manufacturer takes interest and wants to be the distributor. Taking so much on for the production of this game is going to be straining, but I have a long history in the printing business, and I know it will come in handy.

Barring any major setbacks with my printer and other equipment (which is all under warranty still), the only problems I foresee are drumming up interest outside of kickstarter. But I am a member of several online communities that cater to the Three Kingdoms fan world, and will be sure to advertise the game in those places as much as they let me.
