Hi! We’re SKIIN—a textile computing creator in Toronto and the makers of the SKIINCORE Heated Base Layer.
We’re excited to introduce our smart, ultra comfortable base layers to the world! The SKIINCORE Heated Base Layer consists of a long-sleeved top and leggings that automatically adapt to heat your body to its optimal temperature. As a base layer, it applies heat directly and efficiently to the skin, allowing for a slimmer battery and letting you wear exactly what you want over top of it—whether you’re heading to work, hitting the slopes, or packing light for all-weather travel.
Grab the whole base layer set for the Kickstarter-exclusive price of $530 (MSRP $810), the top only for $270 (MSRP $400), or the bottom only for $280 (MSRP $410). Available in both men’s and women’s sizes.
Soft, Wire-Free Technology
Stretch it, touch it, and wash it—we guarantee you won’t be able to tell where the thread ends and the tech begins. We knit our tech (including the heating elements!) right in between the sweat-wicking synthetic inner layer and the heat-trapping wool outer layer.
Targeted Heating, Insulation, and Ventilation
We only heat the areas of your body that are most sensitive to the cold - your core, hands, thighs, and feet - and avoid those that tend to get sweaty, like your chest and back.
Wear your own style over, or show it off proudly!
Articulating Joints to Prevent Bunching
Ribbed on the outside and smooth on the inside, we made sure you’ll stay comfortable with material that stays in place and never bunches.
Adapts to Your Activity
When the temperature drops, your base layer will switch on automatically. It will turn off again when it senses you’re about to get too warm.
Control it with your Smartphone
Let the garment adjust things for you, or manually adjust it yourself.
Small, Efficient Battery & Electronics with Charging port
Our sleek battery snaps easily into its elegant docking station, strategically placed so you’ll hardly notice it’s there.
Simply remove the battery pack first, then throw your base layer into the washing machine on cold. Hang or lay flat to dry.
Light and Packable
Be prepared for chilly weather anywhere in the world without having to stuff your suitcase full of bulky jackets and snow pants.
Thermal comfort is about balancing two things: your core temperature and your sweat. We designed SKIINCORE base layers to deliver heat only to the parts of your body most sensitive to the cold: your sides, hands, feet, and thighs. Unlike other products on the market, we avoid heating the parts of your body that tend to get sweaty, like your back and chest.
All our backers receive exclusive pricing, with even greater savings for early birds. We’ll be in touch as soon as the campaign is complete to get your order preferences for men's/women's style and sizing. If you selected a reward with the leggings, you will also be able to choose leggings with or without the heated foot cover.
We spent 3 years researching yarns, determining optimal conditions, knitting conductive fibres, iterating on designs, and developing prototypes.
After testing 25 different fibres, both natural and synthetic, we settled on Merino wool and high-tech polyester. The polyester inner layer draws moisture away from the body, wicking away sweat, while the wool outer layer creates insulating air pockets to trap heat. The middle layer conducts heat without the need for wires.
Our fashion team worked hard to create a design that is not only super comfortable and functional, but looks great on its own.
We’ve conducted heat tests, wash tests, and comfort tests, and tried out prototypes both indoors and out!
We’re a multidisciplinary team of engineers, fashion designers, and data scientists. At the heart of the SKIINCORE team are: Maruf, our knitting technician; Jasmine, our industrial and UX design lead; Calvin, our mechanical engineer; Alyse, our lead UI/graphic designer for the app and this campaign; Adrian, our hardware director (who moonlights as a part-time model in our shoot!); Hin, our product manager and seasoned Kickstarter creator; and Monica, our product development lead and fashion guru.
These wonderful people led the development, but there are so many others who have contributed to this moment (including volunteering as video extras and more models!) and will continue to contribute going forward.
Now, you might be expecting us to talk about our plan for finding a manufacturer. Thing is, our parent company Myant has already built an eighty-thousand-square-foot facility outfitted with next-gen knitting machines right here in Toronto, Canada.
We’ve spent three years developing and designing SKIINCORE and are proud to receive the “Best New Wearable Technology Device” award from IDTechEx and the “Product Innovation Award” from the Canadian Printable Electronics Symposium.
We need your help to make our game-changing base layer a reality. Back us today and experience a brand new way to stay warm!
Risks and challenges
We have taken one of the biggest risks when making a new product—working with manufacturers—and reduced it substantially by investing in in-house knitting machines.
There are, of course, still some factors that could affect our projected timeline. Here are a few of the things that have the potential to affect our schedule:
Raw materials supply delays
Debugging and app approval delays
Plastics production delays (not made in-house)
Shipping delays due to weather or other unforeseen circumstances
We prefer to underpromise and overdeliver. The timeline provided was a conservative estimate and we hope to deliver sooner than promised. We will do our best to ensure on-time delivery and will be transparent in our process so you can follow along with us every step of the way!Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
