See update #5 !! 7 days left to Kick Kickerstarter Ass!
The first question that the mention of a documentary about Kathleen Hanna prompts is usually, Why hasn’t one already been made? Credited as a founder of the third wave of feminism and Riot Grrrl – Hanna has been a seminal radical activist, musician, and cultural icon for over twenty years. She’s also been a lightening rod for controversy, and a famously private person. Five years ago, she disappeared from the public eye, and is only now re-emerging. The Punk Singer combines twenty years of archival footage and an intimate look at four consecutive seasons of Hanna’s present life, to tell the story of what happened, and who she is now.
In a feat nothing short of miraculous, we have managed to complete shooting for The Punk Singer with almost no significant funding. Using all of my personal savings, the pro bono work of an immensely talented crew of people, and a lot of magic, we now have a bounty of stunning footage and are ready to enter the editing phase. Unfortunately, the buck stops here. Or rather, the zero bucks stop us here.
Our editor, Bo Mehrad, has already been working on the project for the last few months: organizing the footage, preparing the archival materials, and cutting together short sequences. On Sept 13th, I handed him the final interviews for The Punk Singer.
We have managed to land a 16-week allowance of time at a post-production facility, but the clock is ticking. Unlike the production phase, where we made a beautiful film with mostly magic instead of money, we cannot squeak by without at least part of our budget in the editing process. So here we are, trying to raise the bare-bones editing budget on Kickstarter.
If by chance we should exceed that minimum editing budget? We will put the money into color correction, sound mixing, and paying down our debts. Just to give you an idea: we shot this filmed having raised only 3% of our overall budget. That’s not a typo: 3%. That money was immediately spent on equipment. Every single person attached to this film has worked for FREE to get us where we are now. The fact that we have been able to finish shooting this film only having raised 3% of the total production budget is a resounding testament to everyone's energy and dedication to the project. I know there are huge numbers of people out there who believe as strongly as we do that this film should be made. Now, we really need your help.
