Guess what?! World premiere of The Punk Singer announced today

Hi friends,

I want you all to be the first to get this news.

I'm writing to announce the world premiere of The Punk Singer this March at SXSW 2013! I feel really lucky to be premiering at such an awesome festival! Of course there is a ton of work ahead to get us to the festival, but we are on our way and are very, very close to finishing. Once we have premiered the film, found a distributor, and finalized posters and other materials, we will be contacting you to get you the rewards for your generous donations and support a little later this year.

The Punk Singer took a while longer to complete than I thought it would. I want to say thank you for your continued encouragement, letters, and well wishes. I hope you'll love the film. Please feel free to spread the word about SXSW, we can't wait bring feminist punk rock art to Austin!

The Punk Singer, update Oct. 10, 2012

Hi Everybody,

It's been a while since the last update, thanks for your messages and continued support.

Where we are? After some major health struggles and taking the summer off for treatment, I'm happy to say that we are back to work on The Punk Singer. I'm currently looking at the different cuts that have been put together for the film and making a plan to move forward into our next cut. I'm only going to get to make one film about Kathleen Hanna, and you can imagine my standard is high. For someone who has done so much in their lifetime and made so much amazing work, I feel it's totally worth treating this profile of Kathleen with kid gloves. We have been happy with some of the progress in the edits buts it clear to us that it's not there yet. But it's close! We are guessing it's going to take another two to three months of full-time work. Right now, I'm working to get us the support we need to be able to work on it full-time.

I'm looking forward to seeing this project completed as much as you guys! Hang in there... we are.

Rewards! We are behind in this department, I just got postcards back from the printer... they look very cool. So, those will go out in the next couple of weeks.

Each pledge group should be getting an updated message to your personal emails about new expected delivery of rewards. A lot of them have something to do with a finished film, so hang in there and thanks for your messages.

Also, we have a lot of change of address's... just continue to send us a message with your new address, we are getting them. Our awesome intern Anna Robinson will be in touch, or me!!

Tons of love and thanks!!

The Punk Singer, it's been a while, hi

Hey Everyone, (pay no attention to grammar, spelling, etc. it's not my strongest trait)

First, thank you for the continued interest in our film The Punk Singer, the documentary on Kathleen Hanna. Knowing that there are people out there waiting to see this film has helped me more than you could imagine. Also, presser is awesome, I'm not kidding. It's definitely my preferred way of working, and if this film is anything, it's high on the presser level. I guess cuz my topic is KH or something?

I've been working on this film for over 2 years now and we have been in our FULL time editing phase for over 8 months. (I know, we said 16 weeks, that didn't happen) By full time I mean basically, we have been working morning till night almost everyday. When Bo Mehrad (my editor) and myself are not actively working on the edit we are in our PJ's  getting ready to go to sleep, thinking about the edit. So much thinking.

So, last night we screened a rough cut for Kathleen, this is the first time she has seen more than a few minutes of the film. It was, well... a little nervous-ing? Let me say, Kathleen is so supportive and kind, but she is also a total perfectionist so I knew she wouldn't hold back too much in the opinion or feedback department. I count on her honesty. The screening went very, very well.

Our first rough cut was at 3 hours out of 150-175 hours of footage, we are now down to 98 minutes. I expect to keep pushing on till we are completely sure that this is the best film we can make.

On April 1st we will leave our editing home The Edit Center, who very generously extended our stay WAY beyond our agreement, so thank you to Alan Oxman and everyone at TEC you are amazing. We will be moving our edit to Brooklyn to finish over the next two months. Yay Brooklyn. Our goal right now is to have our picture locked (final story) late May.

After the picture is locked we start the color correction ,do the sound mixing, and place the graphics. We still don't have the financial backing for this (which is so hard to believe, YO EXEC PRODUCERS-What are you waiting for? don't be a fool)  but nothing is going to stop us now. That's how I see it.

So I guess what you want to really know is when it will be released? Here is my best answer. We will finish the film, then hold it till late summer and start submitting it to festivals for consideration.

Lastly for the record, this is by far the most inspiring and challenging project that I have ever taken on and I'm so honored and stoked to be doing it. I'm really humbled by the process, and I feel so lucky that this is my job right now. I believe deeply in this film, I believe in the importance of Kathleen's work and her place in history. I believe in truth, love, anger and inspiration and I truly think that we will deliver on this film. (that's kind of stupid to say to so many people huh?) But, it's what I believe so there you have it.

Love & thanks,

Sini Anderson

PS!!! REWARDS!

Check out your EST delivery date. The first level of rewards, Postcards, have not been sent out yet. Sorry. We do not have our main image for the film yet, and that's what I want to send you. Some of the other rewards are not due yet, we will do the very best to get them to you as soon as we are done with them. EVERYONE will get their reward and more, so thank you for waiting.

The Punk Singer, 3 weeks after reaching our Kickstarter goal

Hi Everyone,

I thought I'd give you a quick update about where we are with The Punk Singer.

We haven't written for the last three weeks because we have been closed off in a editing cave of inspiration! Or mostly inspiration, mixed with some general fear. Making a documentary is no joke; it's extremely hard and we have extremely high standards. In the end, I believe Kathleen's personality, talent, and complexities will shine through in a very cool way.

The footage is amazing! We already have enough "outtakes" of Kathleen and her hilarity to put out whole comedic DVD.

Kathleen has a LOT of story, and we could honestly be releasing only part one of five films telling it. But we're not. We're telling her story in just one film. The good news is, we don't think it ever gets boring.

Our goal is to have our first rough cut by the end of the holidays, and we believe we can picture-locked by the end of January. We will continue to raise money, refine the edit, start working on the music, and track down some of the archival shooters. We are looking to use clever angles for text and the way the flat materials are use in the film. With all the help we have, we still have a ton of work to do.

Lastly, we asked Kathleen to stop by The Edit Center last week. Perhaps needless to say, we were very nervous about that visit. Not because we don't believe in the work, but because ALL the footage is of Kathleen. We are very happy to report that she was a total professional,  had great questions to ask, productive feedback and best of all, words of encouragement to keep moving forward.

Lastly, Kickstarter had a party last week for people who are launching or have launched film projects on their site. It was Totally Fun & I don't really do well at parties. Elisabeth who is the film contact at Kickstarter, an awesomely friendly women,  inspired me to do another update and to consider continuing the updates. This was good to hear, because part of me thinks.... they already donated, they probably don't want to hear anymore about this film until it's finished.

So, if you would like me to "skip" you on the updates please just let me know. I'd be more than happy to do that.

You should be hearing from someone from The Punk Singer camp soon about reward updates.

I still get messages here on Kickstarter ,even with the project completed so please keep writing I'm still trying to catch up on messages from 5 weeks ago, I will get to them.

Lots of love,

Sini Anderson

23 hours left to back The Punk Singer + update

Hi Everyone,

I can't believe how amazing it's been to watch and manage this project via Kickstarter for the past 28 days. I've seen pledges come in from people who I know are unemployed, countless younger people pledging $5 & $10, $100 pledges from friends with kids to raise who aren't rich and support coming from people of every economic background. Let me tell you, it all feels rich, support feels that way and not in the "rolling in the money" kind of way. The overall  support means SO much to me.

We are making a little Kickstarter history right now, FYI. We have more backers then many of the top money raising films on Kickstarter, more backers than projects raising over 100K, and we are one of the most poplar films on the site. Our highest pledges are at $2,500. we have 2 of them! We wanted to make this "down to the wire" push for some High Rollers who might have $ to spare. I know that sounds crazy to some, who has $ to spare? Some folks do,  or can give big amounts of money and we are trying to reach them.

Right now there are 23 hours left, right now I'm heading back to the editing room, right now we are hoping that SOMEONE will take the $10k reward (one of a kind) where Kathleen Hanna designs a room in your home, office or business. In case you didn't know, her style is incredible. We also have several slots at $10k for a kind of producer credit, if you want it. $500 pledges for a private screening are available, $250 pledges get you a beautiful production print of your choice. You can make pledges and have your name known or not. You can also manage your pledge, upping it or lowering it. People have done both.

Tonight we are viewing our first rough cut, of the first Act in the film. Wish us luck. Our goal is to be Picture locked by Christmas.

Any money raised in the final hours, money above our 44k goal, goes to finishing costs of the film. If the High Rollers come in now, they could finish it. One way or another we WILL get there.

So, if you haven't passed on the message or video yet, please do. I'm so very grateful for your belief in this project. As I said in our video, you guys are gonna love this movie. It's being done in the most professional way possible, it's beautiful, moving and motivating. It will have a place in Herstory forever.

I'm sure I'll thank you again in 23 hours. For now, have a great day!

tons of love,

Sini a.
