We practiced, we played, we sang, we recorded. Now we would like to share these eleven songs with you in the form of a vinyl record that you can spin on your turntable. The recording is complete (hear it by clicking the link below) but we still need to get the actual vinyl records pressed and packaged. Thus, our Kickstarter project is born. Check out some of the pledge rewards to the right and become a kickstarter for Moon Debris!
Listen to the Moon Debris album
Basic tracks for the Moon Debris album were recorded over a few days back in September 2011 with Will Moore engineering and providing much needed insight as well as some mics and pre-amps that feel very good to hold in one's hand. It should go without saying but the instrumental tracks (guitar, bass, drums) were recorded live, players arranged in our living room with amps placed in different rooms to avoid (unwanted) bleed. We recorded to a Tascam 388 1/4-inch 8-track tape and mixer combination machine and mixed to a Tascam 22-2 1/4-inch 2-track. What can I say, I like Tascam.
The mission was always to replicate our live sound as faithfully as we could but to still create something that had a life of its own, sonically. We are a three-piece and we enjoy the constraints of such a relatively minimal lineup. We didn't want the record to sound like it was made by an orchestra. Many of the embellishments heard on the record are actually played by us live which can make for some hectic moments onstage.
Other things that we chose to add cannot very easily be accomplished by the three of us in a live setting, and were added for the usual reasons: to accentuate a mood or simply to make a certain passage more exciting, the way it might feel live when it's louder and there's more energy flowing.
In other words, we tried to be strict but not prudish in our administration of overdubs. Still, our schedules being what they are, overdubs took many months to complete. Will had politely and wisely declined to get on board for this part of the process though he still offered welcome advice at various stages not to mention the continued use of his gear.
Final mixing was begun with Will in spring of 2012. This was a very hectic time for us as we were all getting ready to move out of our house (Joe had been living with Heidi and myself for several months) so every completed mix was received with a most grateful sense of relief as we knew the record would get further bogged down in delays if we did not finish mixing before the move.
Luckily we did finish in time and were able to pass it off to Portland's own Timothy Stollenwerk (Stereophonic Mastering) for mastering while we hunkered down to the business of packing. His work is amazing and the final results can be heard here.
We hope you like what you hear and we thank you for listening.
