We love our fiction a little different. We want to experience odd new characters and settings through a more twisted and disturbed eye. We want stories that will linger in our thoughts long after we flip the final page, stories that will fire both our imaginations and our emotions. And if we want them, maybe you do, too.
We've got five books on deck, and we aim to blow your mind!
Welcome to Brine, an impossible and decaying city where death need not be the end. Even as the city expands, the citizens' unrest grows. And the phantasmagorical lands Between will tolerate the city’s intrusion no longer.
Between. A shadow realm of nightmare and madness. Always there, just on the other side of the mirror, but its inhabitants have their own ideas.
Pulled back into a world of intrigue and terror, can an investigator unravel the secrets of his murdered love? Maybe if he can survive the terrors from Between long enough.
Everything’s about to break.
Richard Pett's Crooked is complete and ready to grab on with all tentacles and pull you in. It's a tale of weird horror set in a pseudo-Victorian fantasy world. It's equal parts Lovecraft and Conan-Doyle. Steampunk? Maybe, but I prefer to think of it as corpsepunk. You'll never see your reflection the same way again.
What does author Ed Greenwood have to say about it?
"... many great tales have shown us creepy, fascinating, seedy, secret-filled cities. Crooked gives us Brine, a place I sure wouldn't want to live in, but I can’t stop wanting to read more about. Gripping characters... [and] monsters, monsters, and more monsters!... not to be missed."
Royden Poole is having a very bad day.
Strong-armed into investigating a break-in, a bizarre theft, two missing persons, and a shooting with no body, all he really wants to do is go back to pretending he’s dead. And that’s just a warm-up to the craziness.
There’s an infinity of time and space just after midnight where the rules of reality don’t necessarily apply. Most people don’t know anything about it. And of those that do, most don’t want anything to do with it. But a heart’s desire is there for the finding for those brave enough—or stupid enough—to look.
Follow Royden on a foul-mouthed, darkly comic, hardboiled romp through the twisted underbelly of the world you thought you knew in The Hole Behind Midnight.
This is a second printing with a new cover, illustrations, an audiobook, and more! (Need more proof of how awesome it is? Check out all the amazing customer reviews at Amazon!)
The fae are different. And complicated. They don’t really think the same way you and I do. But as confounding as they are to us, we are insignificant to them and their uncaring, alien intelligence. That is, until we catch their eye.
These aren't fairy tales where we try to teach you something. We just want to play with your head for a bit.
By Faerie Light is a dark fantasy anthology offering a glimpse of the fae. Eighteen short stories woven into a flickering path of terror and delight. All are from top-notch authors: Jennifer Brozek, James L. Sutter, Elaine Cunningham, Erin Hoffman, Shanna Germain, Cat Rambo, Jeffrey Scott Petersen, Christie Yant, Lillian Cohen-Moore, Torah Cottrill, Erik Scott de Bie, Andrew Romine, Ed Greenwood, Amber E. Scott, Jaym Gates, Nathan Crowder, Julia Ellingboe, Minerva Zimmerman, and Dave Gross!
Nearly complete, we're just putting the final wards on this title. You know, for your protection. May history forgive us for unleashing this overwhelming, amoral tide of tales upon you.
In the gritty, low-budget year of 198X, the government abandoned the hellscape known as Bad-Burn City. Today, in the cyberpunk future of 199X, a team is going back in.
Ten years ago, President Reagan—before he was fully uploaded to the Net—gave the order to abandon the city. Now, only the tales of mutants, street warfare, cannibalism, human sacrifice, and crazier things trickle out of its walls.
Welcome to Vice-Director Natalie Sophia-Carmen’s first official day of field command. She’ll be leading the mission.
Clinton Boomer is currently wrapping up the writing on Soapscum Unlimited, his new novel of a retro-post-apocalypse.
Tonight, everything John Ryddle has built will come crashing down. He’ll soon discover that he’s being framed for a crime that has yet to be committed—a terrorist plot that threatens to destroy the entire city.
The Secret Sage knows that Ryddle is innocent, but what good is that madman? All the so-called heroes are after these two, and it's a race against the clock to unravel a maddening mystery in the seedy underbelly of a bad-news town.
Clinton Boomer and Stephen Norton are wrapping up the writing on Questions. It’s a superhero mystery told by two characters: one a retired criminal turned private eye, the other a crackpot superhero.
Broken Eye Books was built in order to bring you the crazy and the wonderful. Stories that might otherwise fall through the cracks. Stories that we've fallen in love with. Stories that, most importantly, we at Broken Eye Books want to read.
We publish speculative fiction—including fantasy, science fiction, horror, and weird—that blurs the boundaries. Our books aren't always easy to categorize or sum up in a few sentences. They're complex and not your everyday fare. They're all a little different and wonderfully twisted from the norm.
There's a bit of the unexpected and weird flowing through all our books.
Among Caroline, Ray, Dora, and myself, we have decades of editorial experience, and Matt and Jeremy bring an incredible sense of visual style. We are here only to bring you the greatest possible stories we can with world-class production values. And most importantly, we’re having fun, and we want to share that with you!
What exactly am I getting, you say? Glad you asked! With your contribution, we'll be able to create items that we otherwise wouldn't be able to offer, such as the print editions.
Print editions will be available as the books are completed throughout the year, and any backer of this Kickstarter that is signed up for a reward containing print editions will receive them before they are publicly available: Crooked prints will ship to backers by October 2013, The Hole Behind Midnight and By Faerie Light by November 2013, and Questions and Soapscum Unlimited by September 2014 (but probably sooner). Ebooks will be available before print editions. Hardcover editions will have a limited printing based on the level of backer support with any left over books being sold at conventions. (The signed, numbered limited edition hardcovers will only be available in this Kickstarter campaign.) Trade paperback editions will be available to the general public (that is, non-backers) once the books are officially released.
An Expanded Novel: In addition, because of its early success and warm reception, we're releasing an expanded The Hole Behind Midnight. This will include illustrations by fan-favorite illustrator Hugo Solis, an audiobook by award-winning podcaster Julie Hoverson, a new cover by Matt Youngmark, and more.
Short Fiction: You'll also see some short fiction in the tiers. Each author has created a tie-in story to their respective novels: "The Stranger," a novelette by Richard Pett; "City With No Heroes," a short story by Stephen Norton and Clinton Boomer; and "Love: In the Shadows of Bad-Burn City," a short story by Clinton Boomer.
Boons: Each author has also agreed to grant a special "boon" to backers. At these levels, you can leave your mark forever within the pages of either Questions or Soapscum Unlimited by naming a character or describing his or her terrible demise or you could receive an incredibly rare short story by Richard Pett set in the world of Crooked.
And by backing this project, even at just $1, you'll also receive the updates for the campaign. These will include art previews, chapter teases, author interviews, videos, and so much more!
Add-Ons: See something you want? Add an item to your chosen backer level to truly tailor your experience. Just add the price below to your pledge, and you'll be able to tell us later (once we fund) what you want specifically.
- One ebook of your choice: $6
- One trade paperback edition of your choice (any novel or anthology): $25 (US, UK shipping included; add $15 to Canada; add $20 to anywhere else.)
- One hardcover edition of your choice (any novel or anthology): $30 (US, UK shipping included; add $15 to Canada; add $20 to anywhere else.)
Stretch Goal #1: If we reach 800 backers, the authors word rate for By Faerie Light will increase.
Stretch Goal #2: If we reach $11,000, then Jonathan Roberts will create a color map of Brine, the fantastic city from Crooked, and Clinton Boomer will pen a collection of Royden Poole's essays (from The Hole Behind Midnight.
Stretch Goal #3: A new twisted fantasy novel by Erik Scott de Bie will be added to the 2013-2014 publishing schedule. (Once unlocked, this title can be chosen by backers with appropriate options. The digital version will automatically be added to the relevant backer levels.)
Risks and challenges
While Broken Eye Books may be fairly young, those involved have several decades of experience to their credit. We've pulled together a great team. Everyone involved has spent time in the publishing trenches and is willing to get their hands dirty. Hiccups in the process are inevitable, but the extra eyes and hands involved will allow us to minimize any negative impact on the backers.
CROOKED is already finished, so once we fund, it ships. BY FAERIE LIGHT and the expanded THE HOLE BEHIND MIDNIGHT are already through editing. SOAPSCUM UNLIMITED and QUESTIONS are still being written, but they are nearly complete. We've laid out our path to finishing these books in the next year. Plus, should any author falter, the editorial pit has thumb screws at the ready and, most assuredly, the will to use them. But much to our editors' dismay, our writers don't need cajoling and threats. We've trained them too well, and they always get the job done.
Because the books will be completed at different times, backers awaiting multiple titles will receive them at different times throughout the year. However, all of the titles will be completed and shipped by September 2014.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
