About this project
The team at GRIMDARK MAGAZINE want to get fantasy authors into the shoes of their established antagonists and present you with 15+ dark fantasy stories in a beautiful print tome. We've engaged a range of fantasy authors with established worlds including R. Scott Bakker's The Second Apocalypse, Courtney Schafer's Shattered Sigil, Adrian Tchaikovsky's Shadows of the Apt, Teresa Frohock's Los Nefilim, Jeff Salyards' Bloodsounder's Arc, and many more.
Wrapped in Tommy Arnold's beautiful cover art, designed by crowd favourite Shawn King, and with a stretch goal to fill it with Jason Deem's interior art, Evil is a Matter of Perspective will be an eye-catching addition to your shelf once you're done seeing the world through evil's eyes.
We've managed to rustle up a big range of authors from epic fantasy, dark fantasy, and grimdark fantasy to put together this anthology:
- R. Scott Bakker (The Second Apocalypse)
- Adrian Tchaikovsky (Shadows of the Apt, The Tiger and the Wolf)
- Michael R. Fletcher (Manifest Delusions)
- Shawn Speakman (The Annwn Cycles)
- Teresa Frohock (Los Nefilim)
- Kaaron Warren (The Gate Theory, Mistification)
- Courtney Schafer (The Shattered Sigil)
- Marc Turner (Chronicles of the Exile)
- Jeff Salyards (Bloodsounder's Arc)
- Mazarkis Williams (The Tower & Knife)
- Deborah A. Wolf (The Dragon's Legacy)
- Brian Staveley (Chronicle of the Unhewn Throne)
- Alex Marshall (Crimson Empire)
- Bradley P. Beaulieu (The Song of the Shattered Sands, The Lays of Anuskaya)
- Matthew Ward (Shadow of the Raven, Coldharbour)
- Mark Alder (Banners of Blood)
- Janny Wurts (The Wars of Light and Shadow, The Empire Trilogy)
The cover art is completed and we've got an experienced team of editors, designers and artists to back up our list of exemplary authors and make the project shine.
Once funded, short stories will be delivered in August and September for editing, which should take us through to the end of November to have the copy complete and ready for Shawn to lay out. Once completed, the team at US-based Thomson-Shore will print three versions of it (paperback, hardcover, and special edition) to be sent to our distributor in Texas and delivered to our backers.
The best Kickstarters boast killer stretch goals that keep adding content. You're here for an anthology. We want to focus on that and pack it as much as possible with content, so while there are some add-ons, we want to use every cent for art, stories and paying contributors. As we bust through our funding goal and keep going north, here's our first list of stretch goals:
$28,100AUD ($20,240USD) - ACHIEVED!: Interior art by Jason Deem.
$30,800AUD ($24,690USD) - ACHIEVED!: Additional short story by Mark Alder (Banners of Blood).

Wondering just where in all the levels of hell the damned extra goodies are that come with the backer tiers of other Kickstarters? We've made the call to push all extra coin back into creating book content--stories and art. However, not having that artwork in every facet of your life would be a crime. So here's a couple of add-ons for you to sink your teeth in to.
Bookmark: Want something pretty to mark your place in EVIL IS A MATTER OF PERSPECTIVE without being a monster? Use a bookmark featuring the awesome artwork by Tommy Arnold and there's no need to doggy ear your gorgeous anthology! $5AUD ($3.50USD)
Poster: Family pics and your second cousin's misunderstood artworks less interesting than the EVIL IS A MATTER OF PERSPECTIVE cover art? Bloody thought so! Get something worthwhile up on your walls with a 28cm x 48cm poster! $10AUD ($7.50USD)
Extra Paperback: Need to stock up on birthday presents? Got a mate who hasn't had their eyes opened to grimdark? Like the weight and aerodynamics of our tome as a projectile? Then grab yourself a cheeky extra paperback. $24AUD ($18USD)
The extra paperback is limited to one per backer and increases postage by +25AUD ($18USD) rest of the world and $5AUD ($3.50USD) United States postage. Make sure to factor this in to your backing commitment and to use the backer survey to let us know what all the extra money is for!
Updates to come as we surge towards and past that funding goal! Keep putting the word out there to make sure we can fit as much value into this production as possible!

Risks and challenges
We're making a big jump here from quarterly ezine production to print anthologies. Many of the skills for editing, design, and project management are transferrable, but there are tasks--such as print and distribution--that we're new to and have had to plan extensively to conquer.
As around 80% of our customers and web traffic come from the US, we're printing and distributing in the US to make postage as cheap as possible for as many of you as possible. We've allowed for cardboard boxes and bubble wrapping for each physical book to prevent in-transit damage.
Recognising that we're not yet Ragnarok Publications, we've been working with Tim Marquitz and Joe Martin to ensure we learn from the best anthology Kickstarters I know of to plan for every eventuality, and price these into the funding goal (including fluctuations in the AUD to USD conversion rate for items paid for overseas, like printing).
We've allowed the authors plenty of time to work up drafts (and have received some already), presented the contracts for world rights to the authors and any agents involved, and paid the cover artist.
The only other challenge would be if you Kickstarter backers went utterly berserk and we had over 1,000 hardcopy orders. But that'd be a challenge worthy of Mordor and we'd love to take it on.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
