What is Red Bear Brewing?
The core of what we're trying to do at Red Bear is create a space focused on our community and giving everyone a memorable experience. We want to provide a safe and comfortable place for anyone to enjoy, holding events and activities that will keep you coming back. Of course, making fantastic craft beer is a must-have, but it isn't our only focus. We embrace the fun and quirky in ourselves, as well as our community around us!
The founding team is made up of three friends, Simon Bee, Bryan Van Den Oever, and Cameron Raspet. We all have a passion for craft beer and the ability it has to bring the community together. We have a diverse combination of industry experience, skills, and charisma with which to successfully launch this brewery. We're also a majority veteran-owned and 100% gay-owned business.
Everything started about three years ago with a conversation and an idea. We spent some time pondering the basics, the where, the how, and the why. After getting a bank on board with our business plan later in that first year, things sped up considerably. Numerous fun beer tastings to help develop our beers followed, as well as many hours spent searching all over DC for the right fit for our new home. This ended up taking almost two years and upwards of 50 sites visited, but we finally found made our home in the Uline Arena building located in the NoMa neighborhood! It fit all our technical needs, as well as our desire to be part of an emerging, bustling community. Construction started in August 2018 and is expected to finish in January for an opening in January or February 2019!
Red Bear Brewing will have an atmosphere inside that is rustic, comfortable, and outdoorsy, where our neighbors can come in and feel like they're part of something special. There will also be fun visual surprises sprinkled throughout. We want to be a cornerstone of the NoMa neighborhood and of DC as a whole, becoming a central gathering place for beer lovers and nature lovers alike.
We have a 10-barrel brewing system that will be fully visible to anyone in the space and a huge taproom that can fit up to 300 people, with 25 more outside on the patio. The U-shaped bar has 60 total taps, capable of serving 24 unique brews at three different locations. Along with the beer we brew, when you may want something else we will also have locally made cider, mead, and wine. Craft cocktails are planned sometime after opening as well! The food details are still being developed, but there is a kitchen on site that will be providing tasty meals sometime after opening.
Fun events are key to what we want to offer and we plan to have a variety to keep everyone entertained. From Karaoke and Trivia to Drag Queen Bingo and other live performances! Beyond this, all three of us are big board game enthusiasts and this will play a central piece of what you can do while you visit. With a wall of 100+ games and custom tables designed and built so that you can spread out, we want you to be able to enjoy a game with friends while drinking that tasty brew.
We Need Your Support!
Red Bear is fully funded with both construction and equipment covered. Even so, there are a number of features we'd like to add that would be possible through this fundraising effort. These features would give the brewery character and make the space into something much more for the community can be proud of. In addition, most of the rewards we're offering are unique and won't be available outside this Kickstarter, so now may be your only chance!
The primary use of the funds raised will be for unique, fun visuals installed around the brewery. One example is below, which is custom-made artwork that will be in one of the restrooms. Each of the four restrooms will have a different theme. Our $10k goal is actually our minimum, but we hope to raise more if there's enough community support. We also have Stretch Goals ready to go (Update: See below after rewards), which will be announced once we are officially funded and reach $10k. These additional funds will be directed towards a large mural (12' x 50') that we are excited to have designed and created as soon as we have the funds to do so!
We want to provide the opportunity for anyone to become a Red Bear Founder! Here's how it works:
- Sign-up for Kickstarter - Or use your Facebook credentials to login.
- Back this Project - Choose the reward of your liking and we'll deliver from our end if we reach our goal. See breakdown on rewards below.
- Share with Others - Near the top of this project are social media icons where you can share with your friends about being a founder of Red Bear Brewing and see if they'd like to join as well!
What Do You Get for Your Money?
We wanted to give you all the chance to own a piece of Red Bear Brewing or perhaps even get your name in the brewery itself! We have cool rewards starting out as little as $1! For those that want to contribute on a larger scale, we do offer a few bigger-ticket options.
Each reward below is numbered to match the rewards you can pledge to. For t-shirts, don't fret about sizes right now, that'll get sorted later when we send the survey out. Also, since Kickstarter only lets you contribute once, to one item, we put together combo packages to make it easier to select those if you want more stuff. If you happen to want a specific package of items not available as a combo, message us or go to the FAQ section for guidance in how to handle your reward. Shipping is auto-populated upon selecting a reward.
Reward #1 - Cheers Sweetie! - For $1, the founding team will Cheers! to you (or anyone you tell us to) on camera. It will be part of a large video of Cheers, to be uploaded and available online for everyone! This item can be added onto any other pledge as well, simply increase that pledge by $1. Huzzah!
Reward #2 - Stickers! Get 2 of our cool logo stickers, Washington State meetings Washington DC.
Reward #3 - Pint Glass. With our Full Color Logo, enjoy a Pint at home!
Reward #4 - The Founder's T-Shirt is a one of a kind design and a Kickstarter Exclusive! Ursula, our spirit animal aka "The Greater She-Bear", is seen gazing up at her name-sake, Ursa Major. The back will have "Founder" in text.
Reward #5 - The Founder's Growler is also a one of a kind design and a Kickstarter Exclusive! Ursula, our spirit animal, aka "The Greater She-Bear", is seen roaming through DC and basically taking over!
Reward #6 - The Founder's Plaque Reward will get your name on the Founder's Plaque! This plaque will be placed in a central location of the brewery for all to admire and be a bit jealous of who our early supporters were. While there are reward levels for including this item starting at $100, if you pledge $200 or more on any reward or combination of items, your name will automatically be added to the Plaque as well.
We also have three big ticket rewards for those that really want that unique special something and to be a generous supporter as well. These are Naming a Fermenter, Naming a Brite Tank, or Helping Design and Develop a Beer. See all the details in the rewards section!
Stretch Goals (Updated 11/13)
With your amazing support, we blew through our initial $10,000 goal! Come forth the Stretch Goals! Below are our first 2 stretch goals and what you'll get if we reach them. We have more goals in waiting as well :).
- If we reach $20,000, we will host a Supporters party! It'll be an exclusive invite with the ability to bring guests by all backers of every level. The exact date and details will be determined once when we can nail down our opening date. This will be communicated as soon as we can provide the information.
- If we further reach $27,000, all backers at $20 or more will get a free Taster glass, featuring Ursula! We'll get a graphic up soon to show her off.
We plan to open with approximately 10 tasty beers on tap and continually increase this to until we're at around 20 different varieties available. Exactly how many will depend on how much time we have to brew before opening. We plan to have a number of regulars on tap, a few seasonals, but most importantly we are going to be creating new and interesting brews so there is always something new to try. Some of our starting planned beers are:
- Red Ale - With malty focus and notes of pine and grapefruit
Porter - Smooth with caramel and toffee tones.
- Pale Ale - Aromatic and citrusy. Very sessionable
- ESB - An extra malty, traditional English bitter.
American IPA - A good, standard IPA, with lots of hops and citrus notes.
Double IPA - Featuring high IBU's and it brings all the juicy boys and girls to the yard.
- Sour - Inspired by the Manhattan drink, with cherry and almond flavors.
- Belgian Wit - light and flavorful with orange and coriander notes.
Saison - Spicy and fragrant Saison-Rye with Rosemary!
American Wheat Ale - A refreshing light ale with hibiscus flavors.
Initial Seasonal Offerings:
German Bock - A tasty bock with chocolate and strawberry notes.
- Milk Stout - A creamy milk stout with peanut butter and chocolate flavor added in.

Risks and challenges
Every project has its obstacles and setbacks, but we feel we have already surpassed the vast majority of ours. Most importantly is that the project is fully funded and already under construction. The following are potential sources of delays:
1. Permits are usually the biggest thing that can slow a project like this down, but we have nearly all of these complete, short of the final checks once construction is completed.
2. Equipment: Our brewery equipment is ready for installation, so no real concerns here.
3. Build Out: We have an executed lease and have started construction. Like any construction though we are at the mercy of the inspectors. While we don't expect any problems, this is always a risk as we move forward.
