What we want to do

Rent out a local basement area in which to start a Swedish branch of the Men's Shed movement. (note; ours will have a Swedish twist and will not be exclusively for men).

’Men’s shed-rörelsen’.

Why we need to do this

What we are planning on creating here is a physical space dedicated to building stronger relationships between individuals and the wider community. Our vehicle for doing this is by providing the setting for people to come together and work hands-on. Creating, fixing, tinkering with practical items and problems. With the overarching theme being that general wellbeing stems heavily from connecting with other human beings and that that connection comes easier during a shared experience of creativity.

The idea was born out of a smaller version of the same thing. A couple of years ago, myself and four friends got together to pool our meager resources and work on a project together. We decided to build a boat! The fruits of our labour turned out to be a small catamaran. It took a lot longer than anticipated and there were definitely setbacks and doubts but as of December 2014 with the help of beers, bbqs and banter, the damn thing is almost finished! The bigger achievement though was not building a boat but sharing the minutes, hours and months that went into it.

Why we know it will work

Our idea is based on a movement started in Australia that is now sweeping through Europe. It's called The Men's Shed movement. The movement in Australia developed primarily as a way to address male mental health issues in the community. More often than not as a subtle preventative measure to combat loneliness and depression. Their slogan is 'Men don't talk face to face, they talk shoulder to shoulder'. The movement has developed since the early days and the sheds now take many different forms. Our proposed shed would not exclude anyone based on gender, age, culture, nationality, etc, but will definitely adopt the concept of the members choosing the activities that go on in there. Some ideas that we've recently been throwing around as far as activities go are; green woodworking, vegetable hydroponics setups, a band rehearsal jam area, even a micro brewery! The members will decide.

In short, we think there is a substantial need in Swedish society to have more options and environments for people to connect with each other in meaningful ways. It's possible to see that this model has worked in other countries and we're asking for a chance to try it here! We've already got a location lined up. It's pretty cheap as far as these things go but we still need a bit of cash to kickstart the idea and transform it from a pub dream into reality.

Where's the money go?

We're asking for the first year's rent. After that hopefully this thing will take on a life of its own!

Risks and challenges

The main risk we face is sharing the work load. We have the time to run the venue, but without members who are willing to help out, we won't have time to enjoy it.

A one year foundation supporter membership to the Shed (see the 100SEK pledge for details), plus a butter-knife made from old christmas trees.
