Bel Borba is Here is a feature film about the most inspiring Brazilian artist you've never heard of... until now.
Bel Borba is (almost) here! Burt and I have been working on this film about the Brazilian artist Bel Borba for the last three years. The entire film was shot on location in Salvador, Brazil in the hometown and residence of this great visual artist. For the past 35 years, Bel has made the city his gallery with hundreds of public art works using art to transform, reflect and inspire.
After completing a rough cut at the end of last year and playing some great festivals (Cinequest, Phoenix & Boston International) earlier this year, now we are bringing our project to the next phase: the theatrical release. We are excited to be able to bring the inspiring works of Bel to cities aross America and have the great fortune to have partnered with Richard Abramowitz of Abramorama who is handling the release in theaters.
Our preimer will be at two week run at the Film Forum NYC in October. http://www.filmforum.org/movies/more/bel_borba_aqui We hope to see you there! After that we hope to be able to screen in 9 more cities by the end of the year.
We have had all sorts of positive feedback about the film itself including support from actress and producer Debra Winger who has this to say about the film, “I was totally inspired by not only its subject, but by the filmmaking itself. The music, the editing, and the lyricism that shoots it full of life was a total joy. Most importantly, it is evocative.” (In fact just this week she has signed on as the films Executive Producer.)
We need to raise at least $25,000 to create the final theatrical version which would give us the best Digital Package for the picture and sound and to finalize some music rights of some great Brazilian music! As we have made a film about the Brazilian artist Bel Borba, he has graciously donated some of his original artworks to help raise funds. In addition Bel, Burt and I have just finished a new visual work slated to be shown in Times Square this fall and are offering some limited edition prints. And because you want to help us it’s like getting a great piece of art for free or if you don’t, it’s like getting a great piece of art you pay for and it also helps us get our film out there!
During the course of this film we experimented with different techniques to translate creation. Below is a little clip of Bel "light painting" on the beach at night in Salvador.
Essentially, this film is a look at a master artist, through the eyes of artists. We are really excited to be able to share this collaboration you. Thanks for your support!
Overlapping the NYC Premier "Bel Borba Aqui" The Times Square Art Alliance in conjuction with FIAF's Crossing the Line festival will present a new work by Bel, Burt and André on the Jumbotrons in Times Square. Here is a preview...
