What is RoundOut?
RoundOut is the future of charitable giving - once it is developed it will be FREE to download from the App Store.
This revolutionary application gives you the ability to donate to your favorite charities every time you make a purchase! By rounding each of your transactions to your preset denomination (nickel, dime, quarter, or dollar) and enabling you to donate it to your pre-selected charities, RoundOut makes giving to charity as simple as a swipe on your smartphone.
Currently, donating to charity relies on outdated, inefficient processes that have yet to take full advantage of the technology available. Just last year, for example, over 40 percent of all donations made in the United States were made by check. The lack of a simple donation method that works from the palm of your hand is preventing a younger, tech-savvy generation from getting involved with charity.
RoundOut is based on the philosophy that everyone - even those of us who do not have piles of extra money lying around - would willingly give our spare change to charity if we had the opportunity. Unfortunately, the current donating system discourages such small donations.
By giving donors the chance to donate on a penny to penny basis and incorporating some aspects of social media, we are confident that RoundOut will encourage new donors to get involved with charity for the first time. That being said, this new application is perfect for all ages and all income levels!
Long time donors will love the streamlined efficiency that RoundOut offers. Simply add a credit/debit card to your account, select the charities you'd like to donate to, add a "monthly minimum/maximum donation amount," then sit back and breathe easy knowing that you are contributing to charity without the hassle you've grown accustomed to!
Whether you want to donate all at once or a little bit with every transaction, RoundOut makes it easy!
And the best part about it... RoundOut tracks every single donation you make and stores them like a digital receipt. With one click, you can export this file to yourself to reference in your tax deductions. Just another way that RoundOut makes your life a little easier!
The Story of RoundOut
Alex, John, and I were walking down the street in Cambridge, Massachusetts when we saw a homeless man slouching against the wall of an office building. Instinctively, we all reached into our pockets to give the man some coins because, "Lets face it," we agreed, "our spare change could do a lot more for him than it would do for us." But when we searched our pockets, we all found that they were completely empty! We walked past the homeless man, unable to give him anything more than an apologetic smile.
This actual encounter inspired us to come up with a solution that would ensure that we always put our spare change to good use! That same afternoon, we ate at Darwin's Ltd in Harvard Square where we began collaborating to make this vision a reality. After two years of researching, problem solving, and lots of planning, the ultimate solution was born!
At RoundOut, we are dedicated to the sole purpose of putting more money into the hands of non-profits - because when money is invested in the people, the people are capable of truly amazing things!
The last decade has shown that over 30 percent of all donations given over the course of the year are done so during the last 3 months.Whether driven by the holiday donation campaigns or simply because people want to get it in on their tax returns, there is limited consistency in the amount of donations charities can expect for any given time period. RoundOut would provide charities with a steady flow of donations throughout the entire year for the first time ever!
No matter who we are, we all have causes that we are passionate about; many of us look around at the world and wish things could be a little different. But we often don't act because we are just one person and cancer, hunger, and suicide are such huge tasks to take on - we don't know how we can possibly make a difference.
RoundOut is based on the idea that a little, when done by many people, can make a big difference - an ideal that Kickstarter continues to exemplify. Just imagine if enough people pledged $5 to this project, the result could be an additional $500,000 donated to charity next year through this app... And that's making a BIG difference!
Thank you for the support!
Risks and challenges
At this time, we are facing two major obstacles: getting enough charities on board to be truly customizable for users, and acquiring a large enough user-base for the micro donation method to make an impact for the charities.
The first hurdle we must overcome is that of getting enough charities on the app to make it a personalized experience for the users. Everything can go perfectly well in development and we can bring users a fully functional app, but if there are only 20 charities to choose from then we will not be very successful.
Under our current strategy, we plan on offering charities a free trial period, during which time they can collect donations and see if making money through this app is genuinely feasible for them. This gives charities a risk free way of getting involved which we believe will translate to more charities signing up to collect donations through RoundOut.
Another major obstacle is getting enough users. As more and more people begin to use this app, charities will begin to realize that our micro-donation principle is truly a legitimate way to raise money. Until then, however, it may be difficult to prove our concept.
But that's where you come in!
We feel that bringing our idea to Kickstarter is the perfect way to gain a following from the very beginning! The community that supports Kickstarter is made up of amazing people who care about making a difference - exactly the type of people who could make RoundOut explode! By offering people a chance to help test the app and provide feedback for us is another way that we hope to get people excited about this radically new way of donating to charity.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
