Prints of the flora/fauna of Thailand + Burma, designed as part of a workshop with an arts and crafts studio on the Thai-Burma border.

THANK YOU! I feel so grateful to have been backed by so many wonderful, generous people! Your enthusiasm for my kickstarter project has been heartening, and I feel deeply appreciative to all of you who have already pledged. I’m excited about the artwork that will come out of this experience, and will do my absolute best to make sure that you have some beautiful and interesting options to choose from when the series is complete. Thank you again for your support!

STRETCH GOALS - $7,000

We’ve got until Dec 6th to make it to the stretch goal of $7,000!

If I reach my stretch goal of $7,000 EVERYONE WHO PLEDGED $50 or more will receive a special limited edition print (in addition to whatever rewards you will already be receiving).

With all of your incredible support and help spreading the word, I’ve made my minimum goal of $4,000. I feel so grateful! This was my leanest budget, covering most of my basic expenses. It’s relieving, and it allows me to do the project, but it doesn’t cover all of the costs.

The full budget of $7,000 would allow me to really pull out all the stops with this print series. Meaning, the more I raise, the more I can do with it. I’d like to use the absolute best paper, ink, printing tools, and printing press available to me, but this requires a not so lean budget. I’d also like to have the option to include signature “chops” unique to this series on each print, possibly in a second color.

We can do it! If you want to see this project truly reach its fullest potential, please increase your pledge, tell your friends, and help me hit the high mark and achieve my full budget!  Thank you!

The Project

My name is Mike Schultz. I’m an oil painter living in Portland, Oregon.

This project is to make a new series of prints based on the flora, fauna, and landscapes of Thailand and Burma. These new designs will help perpetuate the Puzzlebox Art Studio, based on the Thai-Burma border in Mae Sot, Thailand. The studio works with Burmese migrant youth, who will be contributing to the designs through drawing workshops and training.

Similar to my previous linoleum block print series of the flora and fauna of California, we’ll be making designs that reflect the local plants, animals and landscapes unique to Thailand and Burma. The themes of these designs will celebrate both the iconic and little known natural treasures of these two countries.

Ultimately, the themes will be chosen by myself after intensive discussions and workshops with the Puzzlebox staff and apprentices on what is important to them about the areas they come from -- which creatures they hold most dear, what plants are most beautiful, which places, monuments, and landscapes they cherish most, and which icons pair together best to make solid, beautiful images.

You’d be funding beautiful art with a compassionate history. For example, these prints might include imagery like rhinoceros, lemurs, the Burmese Python, the Bumblebee Bat, and so on.  A theme for a single print may be something like the Indochinese Tiger found in Burma paired with a specific orchid found in the jungles where this tiger would reside.

An example from my previous series about the flora and fauna of California (pictured below) is the print of a hare native to California paired with the California poppy, the Christmas beetle, and the silhouette of Mt. Shasta (all things found in the state California).

While the designs themselves may be quite numerous, I will choose only the eight best images to make into the final print series once I return to Portland.

The Journey

In 2010 to 2011, I spent 15 months on the Thai-Burma border, where, along with an amazing crew of of people, I helped to establish The Puzzlebox Art Studio. Next month, I’ll be headed back there to work with the studio staff on this new series of designs. The Puzzlebox provides a safe space for Burmese migrant youth to work as artist apprentices learning useful skills that they would otherwise not have access to.

The Puzzlebox is a bright spot of creative energy, and the production of high quality arts and crafts are in turn a source of support for the art studio. The designs for the new series of eight prints will be made in tandem with training apprentices in drawing and product design. These images will then be used to create new products for the Puzzlebox to help sustain itself. Any new designs may be used in prints, batik paintings, and decorative ceramics. It’s this creative energy of the Puzzlebox that will go into this latest series of artwork funded by this project.

At end of 5 months, once my time volunteering at the Puzzlebox Art Studio is complete and we’ve come up with the new designs, I will be returning to Portland, Oregon to create the print series.

The Process

In many ways, with this project, I feel like I am at the beginning of a journey. What is unique about this journey is that through updates and blog posts, supporters of the project will be able to trace my steps, watch the design process unfold, and look behind the curtain at how a complete body of artwork is made.

The process involves drawing designs on paper, then drawing them digitally in reverse, transferring that image to a print block plate to be carved, and finally printing on paper with the use of ink and a printing press.

Thank you so much for reading about my project. All supporters will have the option of having their name included in a short thank you video that will be made at the end of the project.

We’ll keep you informed and connected with monthly project updates through a mailing list! You can watch the process unfold and will have the ability to choose which print you would like when the designs are available.

Thank you

Thank you all so much for your support and help in making the Thailand Burma Flora Fauna print series possible!

Thank you to Beth, Mary, and Max for endless help and support with the text, editing, and the video. To Jack Baumgartner for the use of his music, and to Don Mackessy with whom I collaborated with to make the California print series, shown here as examples. Also, endless thanks to Patrick Kearns who founded the Puzzlebox Art studio, and to Jasmine Spalt, Sein Sein Lin, Komol Kongcharoen, Nancy Chuang, and all of the original studio staff. Thank you!

Risks and challenges Learn about accountability on Kickstarter

The greatest challenge in this project will be making high quality work in such large quantities. Each design will take a lot of effort to get just right; Every piece I do I put my all into. Printmaking is a science of patience and diligence. It takes the right combination of skills and tools to make a good print. However, I’m diligent and methodical and look forward to completing each step of this project. The brainstorming and search for the imagery with my apprentices will be fruitful, and coming home and creating the prints will be a fun challenge.
