About this project
GRAYL Ultralight – World's Best Purifier [+Filter] Bottle
Purify water. Anywhere. After four years of obsessing over every detail of its design and performance, we're excited to unveil the GRAYL® Ultralight Purifier Bottle. Fast and easy to use; it makes clean, purified drinking water (in less than 15 seconds) from virtually any fresh water source in the world! It's a game changer and may very well be the only water bottle that anyone, anywhere, will ever need.
Full-spectrum purification (+filtration). Ever spent three days attached to a ceramic throne due to bad water? With [ONE PRESS], the Ultralight offers the ultimate protection against pathogens (viruses, bacteria, protozoa), particulates, chemicals and heavy metals.
For global travel, outdoor adventure and emergencies. Whether you’re filling up at a questionable hotel sink in Peru, on a gnarly trail needing to drink from a dirty stream, or at home prepping a disaster kit —the Ultralight Purifier has you covered.
Safe water for any adventure. Designed for minimalists seeking the ultimate in convenience, portability and performance; the Ultralight is a perfect compadre for walking the globe, traversing a trail, adventure travel, or whitewater descents — anywhere!
Sustainable travel. Single-use plastic water bottle consumption is proliferating at a staggering rate and global plastic pollution is now an epidemic. This is especially evident in destinations where tap water is unsafe to drink, which often correlates to an increase in plastic pollution in streams, estuaries and empty lots. Travelers can now avoid buying bottled water altogether, and instead use the Ultralight Purifier Bottle for treating all their water. Up until now, there has never been a more efficient and convenient means to purify (+filter) water on-the-go.
FILL. PRESS. DRINK.™
Fast & easy; takes only 15 seconds. Just follow these simple steps to make safe, clean purified drinking water – anywhere! Remarkably, the Ultralight does NOT require batteries, UV bulbs, chemicals, pumping, sucking, squeezing or prolonged waiting.
ELECTROADSORPTIVE PURIFICATION [+FILTRATION] MEDIA
Unlike standard mechanical filtration, the Ultralight is powered by a patented game-changing electroadsorptive media capable of removing submicron pathogens and inorganic contaminants.
With [ONE PRESS], electroadhesion and ion exchange create a powerful submicron trap for pathogens (viruses, bacteria and protozoan cysts). Additionally, the purifier media contains many embedded layers of ultra-powdered activated carbon which create a large surface area for removing toxins like chemicals and heavy metals. Silver treated zeolites, a natural antimicrobial, inhibit growth and keeps the purifier fresh between uses.
Ultralight and compact. Weighs only 10.9 oz.
Integrated attachment loop. Clip onto any pack or side pocket.
Durable, engineered for harsh environments. Safe water for any adventure!
Transparent design. See your purified H2O.

THE GRAYL STORY
Water has shaped our landscapes and every civilization. Today, far too many people do not have access to safe drinking water, and those of us that do rarely have truly clean drinking water. Sadly, serious contaminants such as fracking chemicals, pharmaceuticals and even E. coli contamination are turning up in our "potable" water.
Here at GRAYL's offices in rainy Seattle, our comparatively clean and abundant water still contains added chlorine, trace amounts of arsenic and lead. We have dared to imagine that it should be possible to avoid both immediate and cumulative water hazards globally. We've now made that simple to achieve with [ONE PRESS] purification (+filtration).
The Water Filtration Cup, our first product, was released a couple years ago. It received a lot of media attention, won several awards, and rapidly attracted a loyal customer base. Much was learned over the first six months, especially around manufacturing, product design and user feedback.
The experience of starting a company and creating a disruptive product technology has been wild and extremely rewarding, yet at the same time humbling. Some of our earliest supporters came to us with product design suggestions for improving their experience. In particular, we received requests for a lightweight and compact "bottle" capable of purification (+filtration), along with a no frills hassle-free loop cap.
The Ultralight Purifier (+Filter) Bottle represents a pure distillation of all we’ve learned over the last few years and since have aspired to create.
About Our Co-Founders:
Founded in 2012, GRAYL was inspired by two global travelers, Nancie Weston and Travis Merrigan, and their concerns about global plastic pollution and the poor quality (health, taste, odor, clarity) of water that people around the world endure daily. Nancie and Travis are committed to changing the status quo by making practical and durable filtration and purification solutions.
Nancie founded GRAYL to make a difference in the world, and to solve real world problems. Her journey began in the Cascade Mountains, infected with giardia by drinking from a beautiful crystal clear spring. Moreover, what haunted her was a beach she had visited in Mexico that was literally covered in plastic trash. She decided to make a difference by creating a product that would address both problems.
A gifted designer with two previous patents, Nancie used her talent to imagine the system that would become [One Press]. Her tentative filtration solution, using a variation of a French press filtration method captured her imagination. Nancie consulted engineers who doubted that her idea could be done. However, she would not give up, there had to be a way. Working with a talented team, she improved upon the design, launching GRAYL’s first product, The Water Filtration Cup, in 2013. The Ultralight is a response to customer suggestions and a continual striving for improvement.
There have been many challenges along the way, but the Ultralight represents the essence of Nancie’s original idea, and GRAYL is elated to bring it to the world.
PRESS & MEDIA
Risks and challenges
The commitment to deliver what we promise is something we at GRAYL take very seriously. In two years of doing business, we've learned many invaluable lessons and we're confident we'll overcome challenges and risks and deliver the Ultralight Purifier Bottle to our backers on time.
With the Ultralight Purifier Bottle, we've made the most advanced portable purifier [+filter] bottle in the world. Our design and engineering team obsessed over the development of the Ultralight since our first product launched in October 2013. They worked painstakingly hard to deliver on very stringent design and performance specifications while utilizing only the highest quality materials. The resulting bottle (and purifier) is of impeccable quality. The Replaceable Purifier Cartridge has not changed, but has undergone dozens of tests at independent laboratories. The Ultralight contains some of the world's most advanced purification technology and will keep you safe, anywhere in the world.
We have three years experience working with our manufacturing partners and they are as committed as we are to delivering the perfect product. Our design team made dozens of design changes, multiple rounds of 3D printing and tooling changes. In October and November 2015, we put pre-production samples through rigorous testing and approved the final design in December 2015. Product performance tests were so good, we decided to move our production timeline up by many months for Spring 2016 delivery.
Logistics & Timing
We work with consummate logistics professionals with decades of experience delivering product. Barring a natural disaster, we’ll deliver on time.
Every Ultralight will be accompanied by our ten-year warranty covering workmanship and materials.
The Ultralight takes the original idea (a.k.a. the original all-steel GRAYL® Legend) and strips out all unnecessary elements. We set out to make the most versatile, convenient, easy-to-use, and affordable purification and filtration bottle; early indications from our reviewers and testers is that we achieved that goal. Some of the notable improvements:
At 10.9 oz (309 g), the Ultralight is unquestionably lighter, in fact it's almost half the weight of the original all-steel GRAYL® Legend. It's equipped with a much simplified and resolute Loop Cap, which unlike the original cap design, this one can be used to clip onto a pack or used as a carry handle. Not to be overlooked is the transparent design for which many early GRAYL adopters had been asking for so they could more easily monitor their supply of clean water. Lastly, the Ultralight is more affordable and a joy to use in comparison to it's predecessors. Reducing the price, without marginalizing quality, was paramount so our technologies could be used by more people globally.
The Ultralight is made from safe, durable materials spec'd to perform in harsh environments and withstand abuse commonly associated with trotting the globe, outdoor adventures and responding to natural disasters.
Specifically, the Outer [Re]Fill, Inner Press, Loop Cap and Purifier Cartridge are made from the following materials: polypropylene #5, TPE, ABS and silicone. All of which are food-grade, non-leaching and BPA-free.
Mechanical advantage, baby. No big muscles required. We always recommend pressing with steady downward force at a lower height (either on the ground or a level surface no more than 20 inches) so you can leverage your body weight for mechanical advantage. It's the fastest, most efficient, and easiest way to purify water on-the-go with the Ultralight. If you want to test this technique, try from a lower surface and a higher surface (you'll feel the difference).
How long does the Purifier Cartridge last? How do I know when it is reaching the end of its lifespan?
Each replaceable Purifier Cartridge lasts 40 gallons (150 L) or about 300 uses (silty water decreases the lifespan). As the cartridge nears the end of its lifespan, water passes through the purifier more slowly. When the press time doubles (i.e. 30 seconds), it’s time to replace your purifier cartridge. Purifier cartridges will be available at retail stores and thegrayl.com for $25 msrp.
How can I be sure the Purifier is still working all the way to 300 uses? How do I tell when the replaceable Purifier Cartridge is ready to be replaced?
You'll know the replaceable Purifier Cartridge is nearing the end of its lifespan when the press time doubles from 15 to 30 seconds. Towards end of lifespan, the media become filled with impurities, which reduce the water flow. However, the decreased flow rate actually increases the purifier efficiency, effectively ensuring water remains clean and safe to drink.
During lab tests under NSF/ANSI 42+53 test conditions, our Purifier Cartridge continued removing pathogens (virus, bacteria, protozoa) beyond 300 uses (40 gal / 150 L). When tested in turbid waters, the lifespan was shortened somewhat, to about 190 uses (25 gal / 95 L).
Regardless of water conditions, once press time doubles (i.e. 30 seconds), the Purifier Cartridge should be replaced.
What’s the shelf life of the replaceable Purifier Cartridge? I only travel every couple of months, how do I store it between uses?
Stored under proper conditions, an unopened Purifier Cartridges have a shelf life of 10 years. After a cartridge has been used, it lasts at least additional 3 years.
Keep the purifier in good condition between uses by storing it completely dry and in an airtight container (like a closed Ultralight Bottle). To dry the Purifier Cartridge, press the Purifier into a dry Outer [Re]Fill. Dump out the water, then remove the purifier and allow it to air dry upside down (24-48 hours, depending on air humidity).
Your Outer [Re]Fill, Inner Press, and Loop Cap should be washed by hand with warm, soapy water. As needed, you may rinse the Purifier Cartridge with clean, purified water as needed. Do NOT wash the Purifier Cartridge with soap or other cleaning agents.
