About this project
Let's make the world less crap.
We live three blocks from the beach in Sumner, New Zealand and while walking Charlie our wee griffon ( she stars in the video at the end ) we encountered 30 fresh, brown, small and large dog turds. So something needed to be done. We've tried ourselves, and seen attempts with toothpicks and paper but in reality they're just adding to the litter and after a bit of rain the toothpick and paper part ways — it doesn't really work — so we've developed Poopins.
Poopins are formed by a unique substrate made from crushed up rock particles - Rockstone. They eventually turn back to dust in prolonged sunlight.
It was important to us to have a solution that didn't add more litter to the footpaths and streets. We searched for a great substrate and found Rockstone. Rockstock is made up of offcuts of waste stone, marble and tiles from and building industry and recycled to create a biodegradable paper. It is photodegradable, which means it reverts to a calcium carbonate dust after extended periods in the sun, and because no trees are used in the production of this stock, it has a low carbon footprint. For more information on Rockstone, take a look at their site here. here.
20 Poopins in each pack — each with a custom message.
They come in packs of 20 with their own custom packaging and we'll ship anywhere in the world. Each one has the poopins logo on one side and custom messages on the other — here's some samples. Come on people this is crap, s!#@t happens but please not here, scoop the poop, budge your smudge, don't be a dick, pick up your sh*!t - you get the idea.
Smaller then a Credit Card.
Poopins are smaller then a credit card and fit snugly in your pocket, wallet or purse so you can be ready when it turns to crap on your daily jog, walk or run. If you spot a poo on your trip be sure to tag with a poopin to let that pesky owner know it's not ok and warn other joggers.
Lightweight, waterproof and untearable
Poopins are printed on the heaviest weight rockstone board available at 560gsm. It's like a heavyweight packaging card feel with a slightly glossy finish and a sharp point to make deployment easy. After loads of testing we've found that poopins will go into most poops just fine while still being slim enough to carry in your pocket or wallet. Some week old white rock hard ones may prove to be more difficult! They are also rip-off and tear proof.
What are the funds going towards?
If we reach our goal we go into production to make the first commercial run of packs. We've done small digital runs for our testing but this will allow us to print the first commercial run with offset printing and die-cutting of the poopins along with our nifty (but minimal) packaging to go with it. This will fulfil the minimum order to make this a reality. After that we hope to take this wider into a commercial retail product to rid the world of those wee brown smudges.
Is this really going to help the problem?
We think so. Most Dog owners take the same route a few times a week and we're pretty sure we all know when we've left something we shouldn't have behind, kicking it into a bush, trying to ignore it. Poopins act as a simple, friendly reminder that it's not cool and hopefully the next day that bad, bad owner will pick it up. In the meantime it acts as a pretty good way of making sure no one else steps in it when they're out and about and the dog owner then picks it up — and doesn't do it ever, ever - ever again.
Some recent coverage - thanks a bunch
Risks and challenges
I've been in the printing and advertising industry for over 18 years and understand the complexities of printing and timeframes. We are using local printers we trust and work with on a weekly basis. We've worked with them on developing the product and using the best stock and product we could find.
We've kept the packaging that houses the poopins into as small a package we can to keep the shipping costs as cheap as possible. It will be made of recycled card and a lightweight plastic bag.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
