Two years ago we embarked on a journey to create something big for for the Burning Man community. We built the Imagination Machine; a huge double rainbow, with 7,000 programmable LEDs, a mobile aerial rig, glowing clouds and a spacious raised dance platform with one of the best views on the playa.
Now we want to ensure the Imagination Machine is something you see on the playa year after year. The current vehicle is in need of some basic repairs. A new transmission and some work on the suspension will get us back to Apogaea and Burning Man in 2013. A new base vehicle will bring the magic back in following years, and give us room to expand and grow.
We've got big ideas, and we've proven we can pull them off. But big things cost money. The Unicorns never raise funds to buy personal or camp infrastructure. Every dollar goes back to the community, and this kickstarter is no different.
We danced the front suspension to death. By the end of the week, the coil springs had fully collapsed, resulting in a slightly sloping dance surface. We need to buy new uprated springs for the front and rear. This should increase capacity, something else really important, and safety third. When we purchased the truck, the transmission was already in rough shape. With the syncros gone, getting in and out of third gear was a dance move all in itself. As fun as that was, all 2,200 miles to and from the playa, we need a new tranny (not that kind of tranny, but we like those too). The muffler fell off around mile 400 on the drive home, the sweet aroma of generator exhaust filled the cuddle puddle for most of the week . . .
. . . you get the idea. We're bringing a better Imagination Machine to Black Rock City next year, Truckie just needs a little Love.
Long term, We've got big ideas, and the newer, bigger vehicle is where it all starts.
- Capacity to cram on more sparkle ponies and not break the suspension.
- Bigger front and rear facing aerial rigs.
- Ground level dance platforms off both sides.
- Rideable carousel Unicorns!?
- New and exciting performance apparatuses (chinese/stripper poles).
- More exhaust fumes.
- Sharks with lasers.
The Fucking Unicorns are a theme camp at Burning Man. We are teachers, nurses, welders, business men, lawyers, artists, computer programmers, performers, professional climbers, parents, and friends. We hold degrees in everything from mathematics to art history, but we are not your average 30 somethings.
We are Unicorns because we share a collective desire to add more life and color to the world. We are those people. The ones walking down the street wearing a little more pink, a lot more faux fur, and way more sparkles than might be considered decent. We are the weird neighbors - the GOOD kind - the ones who show up to the fire dept. pancake breakfast on pogo sticks. We are the only adults at a kid’s movie and the only kids at the office. We are your best friends with whip cream and a cherry on top. And we take fun seriously!
Turns out, money can't buy happiness. It does however turn out to be a great way to pay for the fun and exciting things we have planned. Help us meet our stretch goals to see these great additions sooner than later. Imagination is free, but the Imagination Machine isn't.
$6,500 - Front Aerial Rig
We'll be able to build a second rig extending off the front of the car. Twice as much space to play and perform.
$7,500 - Carousal Unicorns
While the graphics on either side are great, we want real unicorns.
Risks and challenges
Moving the art car onto a new base is somewhat labor intensive, but otherwise straightforward. Among us we have the experience to do the job right, and the willpower to make it happen.
In the process we plan on doing some minor redesigning, but the guts of the project has already been finished. The main risk lies in what vehicle we end up purchasing, and ensuring that it is reliable, and has the weight capacity to give the project room to grow.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
