Everyone can help!
Learn to Fly is a free, flash launch-game series about an easily irritated penguin who fights to prove the world penguins can fly. In the second game, he got revenge on any obstacle that got in his way.
Now, our touchy penguin gets issued a challenge to make it to space!
Learn to Fly 3 will be the first of the Learn to Fly title to be a vertical launch-game. For those who are already worried about this twist, a classic mode featuring the old horizontal mechanics is also planned!
The main feature of Learn to Fly 3 will be its new upgrades system. You'll be able to purchase a "body" which will be your space shuttle and equip it with up to 8 different engines, rocket, boosts and gadgets!
Each item will also be upgradeable itself. You decide if you want to invest your money into improving that space-travel air balloon to the max or sell it and buy some fireworks instead. Add to that a launching device to replace the old ice ramp and you can already see Learn to Fly 3 is about customization, strategies and experiments!
In short Learn to Fly 3 will have more items, more upgrades and more possibilities. More potatoes and sharks too (that's a plus right?)
Here's some of the stuff you can expect for Learn to Fly 3:
Any good project needs a sad story to get everyone's emotionally linked to the author, so get your tissues out. (Don't care about background story? Skip this section ;)
Learn to Fly 2 has been out since June 2011. In just a few months that will be three years ago. Learn to Fly 3 development started early 2012, so why isn't it released yet? Glad you asked.
I got sick. Real sick. Lost-25%-of-my-weight sick. Bedridden-for-weeks sick. I thought I was dying, my doctors thought I was dying, my pharmacist told me my meds were generally used for out-of-control stomach cancers ... Needless to say it was a rough patch, and also needless to say Learn to Fly 3 was abandoned.
And (gladly) that's pretty much it. A little over a year after I started looking for solutions, tests revealed hypothyroidism. I started medication in May 2013, my condition has been slowly but steadily improving since then, I reopened Learn to Fly 3 files late 2013 and development has resumed in January.
The reason I'm talking about this is that it's part of why I'm running this kickstarter. Not because I got sick, but because Learn to Fly 3 has already taken long enough. People want it now, I want it done, but I lack the magic powers to make it so (yet...)
Graphics, music, sounds, servers... I suck at a lot of stuff. To be honest I could work hours upon hours and produce the graphics for Learn to Fly 3, but the key here is to make it even better, and to make it happen faster.
Here are the key elements I would use extra cash on:
Game graphics ($3,500 to $15,000)
The main time-hog. I could do it myself, but it would hardly look better than Learn to Fly 2, and it would take between 6-12 extra months because I'm terrible at it. This is the first thing I'd spend any money on.
I could also spend more than the "minimum" and invest in much better looking graphics if we get beyond our goal!
Cutscenes ($3,500 to $15,000)
Same as graphics, except this I simply cannot do on my own. Funded or not, this is money coming out of my pocket. Difference is I could hire better artists, get the job done faster and get kick-ass cinematics for Learn to Fly 3!
Kickstarter Rewards ($1,800 to $7,500)
Building and buying the tools to produce, manage, distribute and monitors the unique keys that every backer will receive, building the extra content, paying for servers to host the services, hiring the php/mysql guy because I simply cannot do it myself, the few physical goods I'll buy and ship all over the world... Pretty much a must if the project gets funded, unless you guys don't want any of these tasty bonuses of course ;)
Music ($500 to $3,500)
Game soundtracks obviously, but this one has a twist; at the minimum I'll buy quality royalty-free music and we'll get a kick-ass game. However if we get beyond the goal, I could hire composers to make music for Learn to Fly 3. As an added bonus, I would be able to distribute these soundtracks, this means that if we decide to fund this, every backer would get a digital copy of the game's soundtrack for free!
Coding Help ($550 to $5,500)
A lot of code goes into creating a game. Some of it I cannot do myself (e.g. online stats, scoreboards, the kickstarter keys you'll get, save servers if we make them...). Funded or not, I'll have to hire a minimum to make Learn to Fly 3 possible. Going beyond our goal would also allow me to get more help and hire developers to work with me and speed up development and/or include more sweet features to the game.
Sounds ($150 to 500$)
Sound in Learn to Fly isn't much to talk about, but I'd still need to buy some new sound effects to put into Learn to Fly 3. Investing more here would either allow me to get more and better sounds or to hire someone to find them for me and save quite a bit of development time.
Online Saves ($0 to $3,000)
The only 100% optional part of the plan, being able to save your content online and access it wherever you please. Without funding this probably won't make it into the game, especially because of the cost of running these servers because millions of you are playing Learn to Fly! XD
"But that makes a minimum of $10,000! Why ask for $5,000?"
Good catch, here's why: because kickstarter is all or nothing. If I don't reach the goal, none of it will ever reach development and Learn to Fly 3 will suffer the consequences. With $5,000 I could hire artists for graphics and part of the cutscenes, and that alone would probably cut development time in half. And I think that's not bad for a start!
Most rewards on this project are digital. This is to make sure most of the donations go directly into developing a better game faster.
A lot of these rewards are in-game bonuses for Learn to Fly 3. The way this will work is every backer (and also everyone who helps advertise this project via Facebook or via our referral program) will get a unique game key that will allow you to access these rewards from inside the game once it gets released. Get more info about keys here.

Design an item**
Work with me to design the visual and mechanics of an item that will be featured in the game!
**Must be approved by the author
Design a Game Mode***
Create an entirely different game mode with me! Race, arcade, challenges... Anything that uses the game default engine in an original way!
***Must make use of the game engine, can be a change of game flow or objectives but not complicated changes of mechanics or graphics, and be approved by the author
A selected few will have access to the in-game bonuses of reducing gravity and getting extra fuel in their tank. That means having an edge on every other player ;)
Before I state anything here I want to say that no matter what level of funding we reach beyond our goal, in the end I want you guys to decide where the extra money is going. I have a few ideas, estimated costs, but every backer will be able to share his opinion and choose what Learn to Fly 3 will grow into!
Here's some of the stuff we could do:
Speaks for itself. More money would mean better artist and allowing them to put more time and effort into each drawing.
I don't know about you, but I think the cutscenes from Learn to Fly 2 played a very important role in setting the tone for the whole game. Making them even better for Learn to Fly 3 would make the game even better!
Hire Music Composer
This is one of those stretch goals which benefit everyone. Unlike royalty-free music, music composed just for Learn to Fly 3 would not only be unique, it would be distributable! This means everyone could get a copy of the music used in the game!
Now this is a complaint I got WAY too often: "My save disappeared!". Flash saves data as cookies, and depending on your browser or PC setup, these can get erased quite frequently and without you knowing it. Online saves would not only take care of that, but you could continue the same game across different computers! These however cost the job that goes into building the system and the cost of running the servers.
Unique Items For All Backers
Simple enough. I could put extra resources into simply designing, drawing, creating and balancing extra items for either every backer, or even every player if you guys wanted it that way. It could be anyway from items you wan to see to a "set" of backers item.
Bonus Point Arcade
Another idea I would really like to implement. Grinding for Bonus Points adds replay value and all, but what if you could also earn them by playing various mini-games? Maybe you could even earn them by playing games from other developers if I can work this out with them!
Remake Learn to Fly 1
Both Learn to Fly 2 and 3 aren't exactly "more of the first game". They all change some key aspect. With enough resources, I could hire artists and coders in advance and quickly make us all a top-quality "Learn to Fly 1.5". The simple game flow of the first game, with much better graphics, game mechanics, more items, upgrades, bonus points, you name it!
Multiplayer Learn to Fly
This one keeps popping up my inbox and I think it would be an interesting challenge. You would compete against other players of your skill level in various game types: distance, race, skill games, heck maybe shooting stuff! The problem is that I'd need a lot of resource to create and run the servers, research on many game aspects I don't know, and I'd probably need a lot of help. An interesting project nonetheless!
Launch My Own Game Studio
This one is a personal objective with a big impact for you guys: better games and faster development. I would like to have the money to be able to hire a complete team of artist and game developers to be able to really create my games faster without sacrificing quality. I would be able to release Learn to Fly titles much more steadily, but also explore different genre like tower defense, farm sim, platformers like Megaman or Front Mission-Gun Hazard and classic RPGs.
Any other thing you can think of!
That's right! I'm open to suggestions and whatever the majority of you will decide I will implement. Or seriously consider at least (in case everyone decides to pull a prank on me and force me to do a pingu dress-up strategy time-management game out of Learn to Fly 3...)
Every backer will receive development updates with polls and surveys about what is currently going on with development, and most importantly what they would like to see.
I will be discussing with you guys to make sure Learn to Fly 3 is not only good, but is what you would want to see in a game! It's not fun because I think it is, it's fun when you get to play and experience what you wanted!
That's right! You can get rewards for FREE and help the project by spreading the word! Risks and challenges
Honestly? Not much. Learn to Fly will happen no matter the funding, no matter the challenges. The real challenge (and personal goal) is to stay close the the player base and keep my ears and eyes open to suggestions.
In the end I won't be the one playing Learn to Fly 3 (haven't played a single one of my games actually! Working over 1 year on something makes it "not fun" anymore DX ). Unlike studios and mobile devs that look more and more into monetization first and game second, I like to make the games the best it could be, free for everyone, and hope success follows. And I think it will ;)Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
