$ The project

A MMORPG that you play in command line. You have to develop your character in a fantastic universe. To play, you just need a web browser. 

  • Attack monsters to increase your experience and improve your skills
  • Achieve quests
  • Buy equipment to be stronger, or just for the style
  • Create clans with your friends to conquer new territories
  • Kill your enemies ...
  • Become the best !

Shellux is a particular game, it is not accessible to everyone. As you see, you only play with text, like an "Interactive fiction". There are few images to ameliorate the user experience, but the objective is not to become a graphical game. Your number of actions is limited by your action points, then you will have to wait a few time to retrieve them.

$ How it works ?

Contrary to many games, you do not use the mouse to control your character, you use text, these are commands.
Below is the list of the commands already implemented. New ones will come soon.

  • For <>, you have to replace by a value 
        $ login <email> <password>
        become for example
        $ login test@gmail.com password123
  • For {}, you have to choose one value of the list
        $ increase {resistance,speed,strength,vitality} <number_point>
        become for example
        $ increase resistance 5
  • For [], you have to replace buy a value, but this value is optional
        $ help [command_name]
        become for example
        $ help
        or an other example
        $ help attack

Note : a tutorial and a full documentation will be developed

$ Player - characteristic

To see informations about your player, use the command 'info'. When you level up, you can use the command 'increase' to rise your characteristics.

  • Resistance : Decrease damages received
  • Speed : Increase number of blows
  • Strength : Increase damages
  • Vitality : Increase life
  • Available points : each level, you get 5 points

$ Player - inventory

You can have equipments to increase the characteristics of your player. You can also use potions to have your full life points back after a fight. To see your inventory, use the command 'inventory'. To use a potion, use the command 'use'.
You can buy equipments and potions in the store, with the command 'buy'.

Equipments in Fedora shop :

$ Map

The map is built on cells, as a matrix. You begin the game on the cell (1,1), in Fedora city. You can go to the different cells with the command 'move', in the direction north (n), south (s), west (w), east (e). To see the monsters/players/shops of the current cell, you have to use the command 'world'. If you are in a city, you can find a shop, otherwise you will find some group of monsters....
You can see the other players only if they are connected and on the same cell.

If you want to attack a group of monsters, you have to use the command 'attack' with the reference of the group (a number with a #). If you want to attack an other player, you can use the command 'kill'.

A lot of work has already been done. The game actually works in multi-player mode.

  • Web client and server development
  • Implementation of commands : signup, login, logout, increase, info, inventory, use, attack, buy, map, move, world, help
  • Part of the game's resources (images, data)

$ Future work

The other axis is the game-play and the game universe. We would like to involve the players as much as possible into the development strategy. For this, tools will be available as the code. A forum will be dedicated to discuss of improvements.

$ Development plan & budget

The first axis is to test the game in the closed mode (only the members of kickstarter), to improve the game-play and to correct the bugs. Then, we will propose an open beta version. At the end of the year, we will share the official version. The game will be free for all player. We shall propose some contents personalized to finance afterward.

The game will be hosted over a minimum period of 2 years (it will depend on the importance of the traffic). If the maintenance will be stopped, all the source code of the project will be available in open source.

The main challenge is now to integrate the players as much as possible into the development process, in an organized and productive way.
