E is for Erfworld, a fantasy comic. We need a new artist, and David is on it!
1,064 backers pledged $45,707 to help bring this project to life.

Feedback considered! Here are my thoughts about your thoughts...

Posted by Rob Balder (Creator)

Hey everyone! I really appreciate all the feedback. I'm not going to try to reply to every single comment, but I read each one and considered them all carefully.

The biggest set of votes seems to favor adding nothing at all to this project, citing the very real chance of overextending myself again. I tend to agree with that, though I do think that some people might have misinterpreted the question in advising me to "bank" the gains.

Some stretch goals are about spending more money to make something cool happen, but the ones I had in mind are more about just making some new Erfworld products (patches, magnets, new stickers, a T-shirt, etc.) If we added a new shirt, it would presumably pay for itself and bring in more money, rather than draining our coffers.

But mostly nobody's been suggesting easy stuff like a shirt. XD You guys want miniatures, a rule book, a map, a game... Almost all of that would require a serious commitment of time, which I don't have right now. Finishing Book 2 and getting the Erfabet book done, helping David get up to speed, preparing for A-KON and GenCon...these things already have a claim on most of my time for the next 8-10 weeks.

Probably, all of those things will exist someday. The minis would require research and expertise we don't currently have in-house. So those will have to wait, and become their own project someday.

The rulebook and map are not going to happen for a long time. They'd impact the storytelling too much. For you, they could spoil the dramatically appropriate time to reveal certain mechanics. For me, they would force me to decide certain aspects of the world that I've left intentionally vague until there's a story-driven reason to fill in the blanks. So don't expect those for a couple more books.

Having more higher-end rewards such as naming rights to a character or writing a story about a particular aspect of Erfworld might still happen. I've got to give those some more thought before I introduce anything new.

On the You had your chance. :D Maybe I could humiliate myself in some other way, though.

And there will definitely be an Erfworld game someday. Probably several of them. The thing is, much like the story itself, we want to take the time to do that right. Even a basic card game I could see being more than a year in development, and probably much more for a video or board game. It'll happen, though, when it makes sense with everything else.

iOS and other tablet/phone apps will appear next year, I think. We had the Android app but Robot Comics folded and it's no longer available. We don't want to let that happen again, so the next apps will be our own making. There are plans for a kind of illustrated audiobook treatment of Book 0. We just have to get through the books we're doing now.

As far as presenting the books in other formats, .pdf and ebook, all those plans are separate from the Kickstarter stuff and those plans need to stay siloed.

I'll tell you, though. I really like the calendar idea, suggested by Ben H. If we do anything at all, then it will probably be that, because I could see it being an add-on and a new Christmas item for the Erfworld store. I don't know, would you all be interested in a 2014 Erfworld calendar? If so, I'll talk to David about it and research the printing. (We could also offer the original art from the calendar project as higher level rewards, giving us 12 new limited rewards to offer.)

Thanks a whole lot, everyone. You're as generous with your thoughts and well-wishes as your wallets, and it means very much to us.

What about a standard 52-54 deck of playing cards?

You could have unique artwork for 'em or (to save time and money) just cut and paste existing artwork. Instead of Heart, Diamond, Spade, Club use FAQ, Jetstone, Transylvito and GobwinKnob for the suits/houses and their symbols.

Beyond that, I'd say save the excess money to go towards Book 3 and wait to see just how successful the August campaign is before committing it to anything. You'll likely be too busy wrapping this kickstarter up and ramping up for the August one anyway.

+1 for the Magnets idea. I stuck the stickers from the last Erfworld KS onto magnetic strips and turned them into fridge magnets. My Order of the Stick fridge magnets also get regular use. Good idea!

I don't really use physical calendars anymore, but that doesn't mean I wouldn't like one. :)

    4. Matt LaDue on

I would sign up for a calendar right now! That would be cool. Magnets would be cool too.

I would love to have the magnets! Ooh, or if there were pinup calendars? That'd be awesome. There's have to be two versions, though. I'll buy the one with the boys ahthankyouverymuch.

      Calendar - good idea. :)

The best way to get more from this kickstarter is to offer more digital rewards.
Open up cameos again. Add in the $15 level and it's "No Shipping" international friendly.
The calender looks like an excellent idea. One that can be kept in the store.

      Short term Stuffamancy
Faction shirts ! The Royal or Knightly Radish of Jetstone seen here: I don't think the basic radish would sell... Stanley's Star, the New Faq Gwiff. Haven't seen any units bearing it but Transylvito, or even Goodminton. Haggar mabey ?
      GÖLEM for sure :

Propaganda posters. Got the idea from the large one of Stanley.

      For longer term projects:
Decrypted versions of the rest of the dwagons.
I repeat my request for the plush skull and for a rework on the plot shirt.
A plush Gobwin perhapse or a Marbit ?

Other than the dwagons, I'm not sure what would sell... GÖLEM I think would do atlease as well as crap golems.

I'd buy a calender. Anything that adds merch to the store is a great idea in my book. I'm always looking forward to spending those Tool Points.

... Pledge $300 (or some less randomly chosen number) you choose the scene drawn on one of the calendar months (within reason).

    10. Miles Matton

I think I know who would get February, the "short" month :D

    11. Gabriel B. on

A calandar is a great idea!
How about various lands, halloween month would be a given. I wonder if they are snowy lands, Lady Olivia could have spring... either that or cast important people... or both

    12. Josh Thomson

A calendar is an excellent idea.

      Calendar... Yes please!!

I'm sure you have good notes and experience, but the current Girl Genius project seems to be going rather well if you want to do further research for the next one.

A calendar could be fun, and magnets could work. I love the OOTS character magnets with a characteristic quote bubble that even non-initiates find humorous.

    15. Lewis on

I would go for the caledar too! Great idea.

@Jeffrey Synn - Awesome Idea. If that were a reality I'd buy one(or two).

I was all ready to comment on the other update, and then this update came out. :P I'm for putting it into the web site. As someone who builds websites professionally, the kind of site you want could easily cost $40k or more.

The idea of the little things, eh. Things like stickers and postcards I think can be backburnered. Naming rights are fun. Maybe some sort of badge (not too dissimilar to what Phil and Kaja Foglio are doing for their Girl Genius KS)?

Game development can easily take 18 months or more. You want it done right. :)

      I'd up my pledge for:
      - the 2014 calendar.
      - a T-shirt -- but not any, please offer a couple choices.
      - definitely the magnets -- I use several metal boards around the house and office.
      - naming a very minor character who is only mentioned without showing up.

    19. James McKendrew

My favoritest quote from the series so far is, "Y' far as helping his own cause goes, Stanley is somewhere between Gilligan and Starscream." If THAT were to end up on a T-shirt, I'd totally buy it.

    20. Anthony Thomas on

If you do get around to making a video game out of erfworld I'd love to be involved in that project.

    21. Jeff Abshire

Calendar sounds good to me! I'd go for that!

    22. Jeffrey Synn on

That's true about shirts generating their own revenue. I vote for a KISS shirt.

    23. Michael Carmody on

Also I am voicing my support for the side-stories again, because the text-only updates about backstory, side-characters, etc., are some of my favorite parts of the fiction. :D

    24. Michael Carmody on

I'd buy that in a heartbeat. Also most of the other ideas for store products from earlier-update comments!
