What We're Up To
We’re creating an educational graphic novel for high school aged guys about sexual health and healthy relationships. With your help we'll edit, draw, ink, and letter this resource, print some copies for those that want it, and make it freely accessible online to those who need it.
Why It's ImportantYoung men do not get the information they need to make responsible decisions about sex or to develop healthy relationships. The sex ed offered in schools is inadequate, our media is hyper sexualized, and our sense of masculinity is unhealthy. Research shows that young men are interested in maintaining healthy relationships but sex ed curricula, depictions of young men in movies and TV, and peer pressure to conform stereotype men as only interested in sex without commitment or emotion. How can we expect them to be better without giving them the examples and interpersonal skills to do so?
To create a generation of young men who are respectful and responsible with their relationships, their partners, and their bodies, we need to provide them information in a format that resonates with them. Other resources lack the perspective of young men and often fail to acknowledge the nuanced realities of the lived experience of boys in high school. This project fills the current gap in sexual health resources developed specifically with young men in mind, and it does so in the most engaging way possible – immersive narrative, striking visuals, and candid advice.
What Others Have Said
Since we launched this campaign we've had a lot of great opportunities to tell others about why we think young men, the internet, and the world need this project. Colin has had the chance to talk with folks from Salon.com, Cosmo, Bustle, and even WTUL News and Views in New Orleans. If our video hasn't convinced you to become a backer yet, give one of these interviews a read through and we're sure you'll decide to contribute!
What The Funds Will Do
We already have a platform to share the finished product with a dedicated audience. We already have a script and character sketches. Your support will help illustrate, letter, and ready the pages for the web by paying our artist a liveable wage for his talent and hard work.
How We Know We Can Do It
The audience is assembled: Hooking Up & Staying Hooked (HUSH) already exists as a website with a significant readership. Our blog, anonymous questions box, and social media profiles drive interaction with thousands of young men.
The cast is filled with talent: Colin, the creator, has 9 years of experience providing sexual health information to young people. This includes 4 years teaching sexual health education in urban public schools, two years training college students to provide health education to high school students as a Program Associate at the national non-profit organization Peer Health Exchange, and organizing three nationally recognized sexual health conferences as an undergraduate student. He currently serves as the youngest member of the Trojan Sexual Health Advisory Council and works as the coordinator of young men’s initiatives at the national non-profit Advocates for Youth leading young men and professionals to better engage other young people in sexual health promotion efforts.
James, the artist, has a tremendous portfolio of work, is an experienced indie filmmaker and published comic illustrator, and serves as Art Director and Integrated Production Coordinator for the brand agency Story Worldwide.
Risks and challenges
There is a lot of work ahead. Gifts to create, pages to create, and distribution are big tasks. With adjustments in working schedules, a carefully laid out timeline with wiggle room for mistakes, and the commitment of those who take part in this campaign, we are confident this comic will be available according to schedule.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
