We gaze up into the stone and wonder what lies above. We look below and shield our eyes, unworthy to see a god in its full glory.
At the bottom of the world lies Sola, the sun. Its light shines upward, past its cloud-children, past the floating islands, struggling to reach the stone sky.
Sola is a disgraced god. As long as we remember, Sola lies hidden below. We do not know why it hides, whether punishment or shame, only that it has done so and continues to do so.
Sola is also a needy god. Even in its shame, it yearns to embrace us and provide for us. This is why all things fall to the sun.
Above Sola are its cloud-children, minor deities themselves. The shame of their parent does not reflect on them, and they are free to return to the realm of the gods, but they can not abandon their creator. They hover above Sola and watch for any sign of movement.
The clouds send their heralds, the rain, up above to the stone sky. This is Uprain, when the water falls up, seeking the word of the gods. The clouds send Uprain to petition the gods to intervene, to reprieve their parent.
The rain returns, falling from the stone ceiling, in Downrain. The water carries the deific response. The answer is always the same: No.
Inverse World is a brand new setting for use with Dungeon World or your favorite fantasy RPG. It is a world turned upside down and inside out, the insides of a hollow planet. Inverse World could even be right inside of your very own fantasy setting, if you just dig deep enough.
Inverse World has its own set of six playbooks. They are as iconic and integral to Inverse World as the Fighter, Thief or Wizard are in Dungeon World.
• The Captain, a high-flying airship owner
• The Lantern, a warrior-diplomat of the sun
• The Mechanic, an inventive sort with a technological wonder
• The Sky Dancer, able to swim through the sky
• The Survivor, scarred from the aftermath of their cataclysm
• The Walker, a master of parkour and acrobatics
You can download previews of all six playbooks here: http://www.mediafire.com/view/?cdbi5ol0y8jha67
When you back Inverse World and check the backer-only updates, download the full versions of all six playbooks immediately.
Inverse World is an attempt to make fantasy fantastic again. It’s a break from standard RPG fantasy and features a few changes from Dungeon World. We’ll cover this in greater detail in future updates, but here are the most notable:
• Mobility. Inverse World is all about mobility and motion. Some of the playbooks are capable of flight from the very beginning, and the others are highly mobile in their own ways. The world is full of floating sky-islands and cloud cities, and how you get from place to place is important.
• Exploration. Inverse World is all about exploration and adventure. Your greatest danger is the geography; your greatest treasure is seeing all of the world’s unique wonders. Inverse World dials down on the dungeon crawls and combat for action-packed exploration.
• Culture. There are no traditional fantasy races in Inverse World, no world-spanning monocultures. Sola’s children are all one people, yet still exhibit a variety of magical and amazing features.
Inverse World will be available in both pdf and softcover, black and white book. By popular request, a FATE version of each physical reward tier is also available.
We’re offering a set of full color postcards to showcase the unique geography of Inverse World. A full set includes five postcards with iconic locations.
We’ll keep this list updated with all stretch goal additions.

When you add 60$ to your pledge, Jacob Randolph will add an illustration and some personalized touches to one of your physical copies, as per the Illustrated Tier.
If we happen to fund past our initial goal, we have a few plans to expand Inverse World.
$3000 - REACHED: We’ll include a sixth postcard in the “Welcome to Inverse World!” set. Everyone backing at $50 or higher physical reward tiers will receive all six postcards.
$5000 - REACHED: We’ll include free content from Funhaver Games and Jacob Randolph’s line of Dungeon World content. Every backer at every level will receive a grab-bag of content, which will be sent out when funding is over. In addition, we will include additional hazards and giant monsters in the core book.
$8000 - REACHED: Jeremy Freisen, author of Take On Establishments, will write adventure locations for Inverse World. Like the locations in Take On Establishments, these locations will be great starting places or hooks for any adventure, and will feature customized moves to challenge your players with.
$10,000 - REACHED: Sean Dunstan, co-author of the GM's Guide to Dungeon World, will write up an Instant Islands Guide, allowing the GM to instantly generate islands and locations when the party goes somewhere unexpected, or maybe just to help you get going quickly in a new campaign. In addition, we will add another postcard to the set, making 7 total.
$13,000 - REACHED: Andri Erlingsson, author of Fortune System's Ragnarök and various third-party Dungeon World supplements, will be writing rules for vehicles and mounts for use in the Inverse World system. These will be in keeping with his upcoming supplement, Dungeon World: Mounted Combat.
$15,000 - REACHED: Jonathan Walton, author of Dark Heart of the Dreamer, will do a 4 to 6 page Inverse World conversion of World of Dungeons, which will be released as a .pdf to all backers.
$18,000: Playable alpha versions of The Collector and The Golem will be made available on June 1st, for backers of every level! If we do not reach this stretch goal, it will probably be a while longer before playtest versions are available for looking at and working with.
All of the reward tiers include shipping within the continental US.
Unfortunately, the cost of international shipping has increased significantly in the last few months. If you’re outside the continental US and you’d like a physical copy of Inverse World, please add $20 to your pledge total to account for shipping.
We know, shipping prices are the worst. We’re doing what we can to make up for it. If you have a group of friends or can pool with other backers, please check out the $125 level to split the cost of shipping with three other people.
The $300 playbook reward tier includes international shipping; if you select this reward tier, there’s no need to include the extra $20 to your pledge total.
At the $250 and $300 reward tiers, we’ll work with you to create a brand new Dungeon World playbook. It can be just about anything you’d like. Once it’s finished, we’ll release the playbook to the public so everyone can enjoy.
You can give us as much or as little direction on the playbook as you like. We’ll put the mechanics through the peer review process that shaped such popular playbooks as The Warlock and The Witch.
We do reserve the right to ask you for a different idea if it’s too offensive or vulgar, but we’ll work with you until you’re completely satisfied with the final product.
Inverse World is the work of Jacob Randolph (The Dashing Hero, The Witch) and Brandon Schmelz (Last Stand, Wizard Council).
The artists are Jacob Randolph, Crossfrown, and H.P. Heisler, with more to come. All art on this page is concept art and may be subject to change.
Risks and challenges
Inverse World is led by two co-creators. Should one of us be unable to fulfill our end of the Kickstarter, the other is able to take over. Both of our duties are documented and available to the other through Google Drive.
These are common problems that arise during RPG Kickstarters, and how we plan to avoid or fix them.
Writing: The text of Inverse World is complete and ready to go. There won’t be any delays to finish the book’s content. All of the content is backed up in multiple locations, both physically and through Dropbox/Google Drive. However, anything revealed at this stage may be changed before final release, at our discretion.
If something should come up, we have a number of prominent third party Dungeon World creators standing by to step in.
Shipping and Fulfillment: The members of our team have experience with shipping and fulfillment for Kickstarter projects, and have learned from their own mistakes (as well as the mistakes of others). We already have all of the necessary shipping supplies and a process worked out with the post office.
If shipping costs end up being greater than expected, as many saw with recent international shipping increases, we’ve budgeted accordingly to handle it.
We have three printers we can work with just in case of a delay or another issue with a specific printer.
Art: If there are any delays with the art, we’ll be sure to let you know immediately. Jacob Randolph is also contributing some of the art to the book and can fill in if necessary, but we’re also in the position to have multiple artists ready to work if we need replacement or extra art.
If you have any other concerns, please let us know. We’ll be happy to answer.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
