About this project
Documenting the search for the San Marcos in Ireland with a book of approximately 200-250 pages, a documentary video of thirty minutes to an hour, and a blog to update the progress of the search along the way.
I started my connection with this spot on the coast of Ireland 47 years ago when I first felt something calling me. It is a feeling I have never been able to shake. There is a mystery here that has hidden underwater for the last 426 years. One of the most powerful ships from the Spanish Armada, one of many Portuguese ships in the Grand Armada, wrecked here in a storm and lost all of the almost 500 lives on board. It has to be very close, but she has still not been found after centuries of searches. This year a massive search with 60 divers and the latest technology is planned to finally find and explore her and all the mysteries she has held for centuries. Other ships from the Armada have been explored and even materials like leather have been preserved under the blanket of sand. She is a time capsule full of stories about the 500 men onboard and the period in history.
But that is not the only story to be told. My book will be a short history of the human passions and political and economic drives that set the Armada in motion and the real personalities and their agendas. It was officially a "holy war" but beneath the religious excuses much more selfish motives were at work.
The book will then focus on the design, construction and history of the voyages of the San Marcos in the years before the Great Armada, Then the battles of the Armada and the tragic destruction of the ship on the coast of Ireland.
Then the sleeping centuries and failed searches.
But the most exciting part of the book is about the individuals drawn to this search now. The historians, archeologists, researchers, and divers focused on the mystery of the San Marcos. Project San Marcos 2014 is underway led by John Treacy a PhD. candidate in the final stages of his doctorate in Irish naval history. John was born and his family has lived for centuries near the site of the wreck, which is the location of much of the action in my novel. But now I am writing non-fiction about John and the others in this team drawn to discover the San Marcos at last.
This is a modern adventure to uncover the wreck and find what lessons are in the past to guide us today. And this is an adventure to also explore the greatest terra incognito of them all - what drives the curiosity of man.
I will complete a documentary video which will cover much of the same material, but it is another storytelling medium that will complement the book.
The blog will provide on the spot updates and will include kickstarter supporter exclusives.
YOU will be part of the team. You will be able to make comments in video clips (under 2 mins) on the blog, and the best ones will be chosen for inclusion on the exclusive video and quoted in the book.
Your participation is an integral part of the whole project. I want to know what drives YOU to be a real part of this adventure. How is the San Marcos calling you, and what you want to know.
This mystery from centuries ago has a very modern message for us.
Aside from the "postcard from Ireland," (which will be send from Ireland by normal post), all parcels will be shipped in the US by United Parcel Service, so that we can have reliable delivery and tracking. All support level prices include shipping in the U.S.

Update on Spanish-Irish connection with the San Marcos Project.
An Irish government minister Jimmy Deenihan of Department of Arts Heritage and Gaeltacht is launching the San Marcos Project with the Spanish ambassador to Ireland and the launch will be covered in the Spanish news channels Telecino and Cuatro in a few weeks.
Risks and challenges
The weather in Ireland this winter has been the worst since the storm of 1588 that wrecked the Armada ships. A series of record storms has re-arranged the coastline and may have moved sand around the wreck, or Neptune may have arranged this giant underwater bulldozer of his to help reveal her secrets at last. People have searched for the San Marcos for centuries unsuccessfully. She may still avoid discovery. Nothing is certain connected with the sea. But this time there are sixty divers committed to begin the search and the latest in technology is available to search with electronic tools. Fresh clues have been discovered from new science and re-analyzed historical records. A massive organized search is planned and these new clues give a refined focus. But nothing is sure except that there will be a search and I CAN write about that in detail - the excitement and the heartache, the danger and the unforeseen. I will need to travel to Ireland to be there, but since I cannot predict when it will be discovered - I have to plan for several trips to cover various aspects of the search and exploration. There is a story here - a story of mystery and my own exploration of what it is that drives men to search for a mystery. I will write that story no matter what. And the story of what has driven me to be involved with the San Marcos since I was a teenager standing on the shore listening to the whispers of the unknown. This gives me a unique perspective to tell the story in a book, video, and blog. I have published two books already, and created several documentaries of this length. I know what is involved in production and I know how to plan a complex project. And I am working with others who are searching for their own reasons and all of us have joined in a common purpose to understand what has been invisible for so long.
FIRST TIME TO KICK STARTER? Here is some information for how the site works. https://www.kickstarter.com/learn…
One key point I want everyone to understand is that, if the project minimum is not reached, everyone gets their money back. I know things are moving slowly now-- we have a lot of releases out and hope to get some news coverage which will help. But we do understand folks might worry whether this is going to fly, and what happens to their support if it doesn't. Easy answer-- you get your money back. So please, join us on this journey and we can make the minimum and tell this wonderful story-together.
Even if this kickstarter project does not get funded, the book is underway and the San Marcos Project is well underway - I will find another way to get to Ireland to finish the book and video. For those who want to follow the progress I will continue this blog at www.wakingremembering.com I have been connected with this project for 47 years and I will continue.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
Yes it is! While the "postcard from Ireland" will use the normal post, everything else that is physically shipped will be sent UPS, and those costs are already factored into the prices.
