Hi everyone! I'm so excited to share my newest project with you - No Beginning No End: A Year in Words and Photos. With your help this can become a reality!
No Beginning No End: A Year in Words and Photos will be a limited edition book that documents the creation and touring process of that album, as well as an in-depth look at some of the creative minds behind the album. Designed by Hayden Miller, the book will be a premium grade 12x12 vinyl size hardcover edition, with a run of 500 copies worldwide. A digital e-book version will also be available.
PLEASE NOTE: We have not printed this book yet. Any images we post are from a prototype of the book.
I've been dreaming of collaborating with the legendary music photographer Janette Beckman for years. Janette has shot all your favorite artists - LL Cool J, Run DMC, Salt n Pepa, Slick Rick, Ice Cube, Debbie Harry, Pete Townshend, Paul Weller, The Sex Pistols, The Beastie Boys, The Police, and many more.
As the New York editor of Jocks and Nerds magazine Janette regularly features contemporary artists whom I work with such as Robert Glasper, Taylor McFerrin, and Jason Moran, so we have a shared community. We started shooting for Jocks and Nerds back in 2011 and soon found we also shared a particular aesthetic. We love New York with its street culture, fast pace and jazz and hip-hop haunted corners. Our shoots were always improvisational in the best sense; working from feeling and from a shared language. Working on pure instinct. It was this instinct that led me to ask Janette to shoot the cover for my debut album No Beginning No End. The album itself was a mix of old and new - jazz harmony played by avant-garde beat-makers Chris Dave, Robert Glasper and Pino Palladino; urban pop written by Emily King; deep R&B horn lines from Takuya Kuroda and Corey King. I was moving toward a new sound that the New York Times would eventually call "The result of the black-pop continuum, jazz and soul and hip-hop and R&B, slow-cooked for more than 50 years." Janette was there every step of the way documenting it all with her camera. For the first time in my life I opened up my private work life to someone outside the band and it has been fascinating to see what she captured. She shot me in two countries for over two years, getting the spirit of my writing sessions, live performances and studio recording. From the hotel rooms, canals and concert halls of Amsterdam to the streets, recording studios and stages of Manhattan Janette perfectly mirrored the moment, expressing the truth of what we were creating. The triumphs, the disappointments, the Concertgebouw Orchestra and the Tonight Show - it's all there.
And then there are the words. I kept a tour diary from Dec 2012 to March 2014, trying to put to paper the rush of touring and the beginning of a new life. I also wrote in depth about the musicians and artists who helped me create a truly life-changing album. I even got the band in on the act, asking Richard Spaven, Takuya Kuroda, Solomon Dorsey, Kris Bowers, Corey King, and Brian Bender to write essays about touring, performing or really just whatever they wanted. The results are intimate, poignant, sometimes humorous and always real. I want this book to be a true reflection of what we went through to create this music and to bring it to over 40 countries worldwide.
It's a deeply personal work and one that we've given our all to. Every detail - from the inspired design by Hayden Miller to the meticulously curated images by Janette - has been carefully considered. The book itself is a 12"x12" hardcover vinyl size and runs 130 pages. The paper will be heavy archival quality to reflect the deep tones of Janette's black and white photo series. It will truly be a collectors item and we will do a limited first edition printing to reflect that.
But most importantly, this book is a piece of my heart. It's two years of my life full of triumph, romance, heartbreak, and discovery. I hope that in creating this piece I'm able to share a deeper side of myself, more personal and more real. Thanks for all your support in helping me share this with the world!
