 The ArtCADDY™

  • Organizes your tools and supplies

  • Positions your palette

  • Reduces stress

Organizes tools and supplies. The ArtCADDY™ was designed by an artist, and made for artists. It is a plastic molded tray that helps you organize your tools and supplies and positions them within easy reach as you create your masterpiece.

The Art Caddy holds all these tools and supplies.
The Art Caddy holds all these tools and supplies.

Positions the palette. The ArtCADDY™ seats the artist’s palette at an angle that is natural for mixing paint and loading the brush, just so.  Now you have a safe place to rest your palette when you have to grip your wrist to steady your brush-hand for the fine details.

Reduces stress.Because all your needs are at your fingertips, you focus completely of your painting, without distractions, without interruptions. You know where every brush or tint is, where the charcoal sticks are, the wide-blade palette knife, without having to look away from the image taking form on the canvas. The ArtCADDY™ has brought productive creativity – within your reach™.

The ArtCADDY™ Story, the short version

In early October we took delivery of a 3D-printed, patent pending prototype of the ArtCADDY™.  This was the first milestone after six months of several rounds of design development and pre-prototype construction. Further improvements were made after field testing. We are especially grateful to the following partners for guiding us through this process;

  • North Carolina Small Business and Technology Development Center
  • Center for Rapid Product Realization, Kimmel School, Western Carolina University
  • Southeastern Institute of Manufacturing & Technology
  • Womble Carlyle Sandridge & Rice, LLP

Two additional prototypes, incorporating the latest design improvements, have received amazing responses from testers. After three hours of plein air painting, one artist simply declared, “I love the ArtCADDY™”. In addition to field testing, the wholesale distributors and small-chain retailers in the art supplies market we’ve spoken with have shown great interest in the product.

We have come to Kickstarter for help in getting the ArtCADDY™ onto the shelves of art supply stores and into the hands of artists. We need $100,000 to order the mold and the first batch of 5,000 art caddies. We have every confidence that once the money is in hand, we can accomplish the logistics of tool design and production, and product manufacture in time for Spring/Summer 2015.

The ArtCADDY Team

RICHARD CHATHAM

Richard is a serial inventor, with patents for products such as, Draft-Mate - increasing drawing room productivity by organizing drafting tools for ready finger-tip access, and Hindi-Carrier - a similar tool for house painters.  The ArtCADDY is his gift to the art world.  Visual artists can now easily find the right brush or the right tint.  They can use both hands for detail work, because the palette sits in the ArtCADDY at the perfect angle.

Since they met more than twenty years ago, Richard and Charles John have been on the brink of going into business together.  It would take the ArtCADDY to pull the trigger.  They formed BE ArtSMART, LLC.

CHARLES JOHN

As president of Be ArtSMART, Charles' main task is to guide the company through is start-up phase, while managing the launch of the ArtCADDY into the national art supplies market.  After a career in agribusiness in his native Trinidad & Tobago, Charles came to the United States in 1988.  He settled in Greensboro, got his MBA from UNCG in 1990, and worked with the SBTDC until 2003.  Since then, he has worked in the telephone equipment ad network cabling industries.

As the ArtCADDY progressed from early stage concept drawings through pre-prototype construction to patent pending 3D final prototype, Mavis joined the team as Marketing Manager.

MAVIS LIGGETT

Mavis graduated with a BFA in printmaking from the University of Connecticut and proceeded to have a 15+ year career as art director in the international tag and label industry with companies headquartered in the Triad.  Subsequent positions included production management, print and marketing sales and marketing coordination for Ralph Lauren furniture.  Mavis is the sole proprietor of Nuclear Catfish, a fine art, graphic design and marketing company located in Oak Ridge, NC.

 Getting the ArtCADDY™ to you

Risks and challenges

The obvious challenge to success in launching the ArtCADDY™ into the market for artists’ tools is the substantial capital outlay needed for tooling and cost effective production runs. Our response has been to devote the required resources to the establishment of the BE ArtSMART™ and ArtCADDY™ brands with the following message. “There is a way to improve your art, to keep you focused in the zone, to improve your productive creativity™. It is the ArtCADDY™. It was designed and built for one purpose, to keep your muse on task™.”
Of course, the high capital outlay and, therefore, our $100,000 target puts us at some risk of not getting there. The best we can do is to share our passion for this project with the widest possible audience of artists and art lovers and to believe that your passion for better art will see us through.
An important player in the art supplies business alerted us to another big risk out there, “items like these are difficult if not impossible to patent in a way they cannot be copied and changed, if the item is successful most likely it would be copied”. Other than retaining the best patent lawyers money can buy, we took heart in the distributor’s conclusion that “this is not a deal breaker for us”.
