What's the project that we are asking you to support?
This is a project to make a short film to inspire a new generation. Based upon a talk by the same name, Our Sudan will encourage young Sudanese to think differently about themselves and about their future, inspiring them - “to believe that the future is not a matter of what will be but what could, that it is a choice and it is theirs to make.”
What is "Our Sudan"?
Our Sudan tells the story of a generation of young men and women raised in a world of great tumult and change in which the dream of an older age seems to have been lost. The talk presents a new perspective, offering a celebration of Sudan’s promise and calling upon young people to “dream a new dream, the dream of our generation.”
Why is it important to make this film?
Sudan is often associated with poverty and conflict, but there is another side to the country, one that is rarely shown, a place with a long and proud history, great natural wealth, and enormous human potential.
Peoples' sense of what is possible is key to unlocking this potential. Sudan’s youth need to start to re-imagine Sudan and its future - to believe that things can be different and that it is in their power to make that difference.
The video 'Our Sudan' is designed to inspire young Sudanese in Sudan and the diaspora to think differently about themselves and their future.
What will the film 'Our Sudan' look like?
Imagine the script of our 'Our Sudan' performed for the camera by fifteen to twenty young people from different Sudanese ethnicities, tribes, and backgrounds. Each of them delivering a different section of the script.
A young woman at the front door of her home will begin: "I have this memory of an old Sudan, a torn and faded picture, a warm and beautiful place, imprinted in my memory as if it were my own" ... Cut to a university graduate: "a world of wide open boulevards of clean roads and white robes"; a bus driver; a doctor; a market seller; a farmer; a soldier; an activist; a businessman and a teacher... together they will provide a glimpse into Sudan’s immense diversity. Together they will deliver a message of hope and promise.
How will people see the film?
'Our Sudan' will be launched at TEDx Khartoum tedxkhartoum.com/site/ to the TEDx community worldwide. In addition, it will be distributed free of charge to local and international television and radio stations, as well as to Sudanese cultural centers, civil society organisations and youth groups. It will also be streamed online on YouTube, Vimeo, and Facebook.
Why do we think this project will be a success?
The TEDx version of the film has garnered great support. Since its posting on YouTube in May, 2012, it has been viewed over 9,200 times, with more people visiting the site each day. Furthermore, it has received extremely positive responses from young Sudanese both in Sudan and the diaspora. Comments on YouTube include the following:
“A truly inspirational presentation! I feel extremely proud to be Sudanese and I do hope that this generation will move forward and go from strength to strength. Thank you for reminding us that there is always hope and that if we stay positive and look at our achievements then things will get better.”
“Fascinating, I am just sad that not all of Sudanese youth can see this ...it's inspiring, hopeful, joyful to watch”
“Am really speechless.....Now am so proud of being part of this nation.......go ahead Sudanese.”
“What a beautiful presentation. Preserving memories and stories such as this is crucial to rooting the present in what has gone before and drawing inspiration from it.”
What will we spend your money on?
We've put a lot of our time and money into planning this film and recording a promotional video in order to present the project. We want this film to be outstanding, we need your support.
Here is a just a small slice of where you Kickstarter funds will go:
- Shooting additional footage
- Editing and organizing the raw footage
- Marketing and promotion
- Color correction
- Sound mixing
- Storyboarding and planning
- Legal fees and soundtrack licensing
- Film festival registration fees
- Equipment improvements for our second round of recording
This film is going to be amazing, and we can't wait to share it with you. Thank you so much for your support!
Risks and challenges
The two biggest challenges we face relate to money and time. We happen to be short on both! Without money we will not be able to get the equipment and technical support to make the film OUTSTANDING! And nothing less will do.
We are also quite short on time. Our goal is to launch the film at the next TEDx Khartoum event, which is on the 27th of April. This gives us just over two months to recruit the team and make the film.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
