Stanford training the trainers event June 8-11, California

Let's change the media landscape in Latin America, by creating opportunities to women journalists with digital training

Hello I’m Mariana Santos, a JSK Knight Fellow and director of Fusion Interactive team. Last year I had the chance to work with many different newsrooms across Latin America, there was when I saw in first hand, the lack of connection between women journalists and technology departments in their newsrooms.

I want to implement democracy in Latin America, empowering leadership for women. You and me can be the ones who will change this scenario!

Problem

The huge gender gap in technology in Latin America means there is essentially an absence of women working in media technology in the region. As newsrooms add and develop more technology, this imbalance means women’s stories and voices will be left out.

Imagine newsrooms where you have journalists in one building and developers in another building, where stories are sent by email, without allowing for face-to-face interaction between journalists and developers.

Seeing this, I decided to start Chicas Poderosas. A mentorship network for women that creates face-to-face events to build  bridges and teamwork between journalists, designer and developers.

Chicas Poderosas network
Chicas Poderosas network

Solution

Network of mentors and journalists that provides training and introduction to new digital tools to give women journalists a voice.

To be players for the future we need to empower women as digital storytellers. Otherwise they will be left behind or worse, lost their voices.

Create engagement. Empowering women to be leaders, independent vibrant in Digital Media.

The impact of this initiative has been huge. Over 15 months, we held 11 events. More than 1,000 women got training from leaders of bleeding-edge media, from the NYT, the Guardian, NPR, La Nacion, to name a few.

Chicas Poderosas after 14 months of training
Chicas Poderosas after 14 months of training

If it wasn't for Chicas Poderosas, most of these women would never have had the chance to meet and learn from these amazing journalists, developers and designers.

HOW IT WORKS

Stage 1: Chicas Poderosas is an organisation that provides hand-on-hand mentorship, training and empowerment. Bringing the leaders of major digital newsrooms to Latin American countries, we gather for 3 days of training focusing on how to use tools to find information online, how to work with databases, how to work in multidisciplinary teams of journalists, developers and designers, and overall how to create digital stories that resonate with audiences.

Stage 2:  We are now working to find ways to grow the network organically without having to travel around the world - build it organically.

One way to do this is to scale: by mentoring the upcoming women leaders in newsroom technology, Chicas Poderosas will build the capacity of women storytellers to pay it forward, creating their own events and mentoring programs for other women journalists in their newsrooms and countries. The goal is to generate events without needing the founder to be there physically, allowing an explosion of events taking place all across Latin America.

  • Mission: Bring women into technology in newsrooms

  • Problem: In Latin America many investigations by women do not reach their audiences

  • Solution: Train women via mentoring and learn-by-doing programs that connect them with global media leaders

  • Benefit:  To close the gap, reach more audiences and impact more woman-focused policy changes

  • Motto: Brigham Young — 'You educate a man; you educate a man. You educate a woman, you educate a generation

How is your money be used?

To bring 30 Chicas Poderosas Ambassadors to Stanford, flying them from

  • Mexico

  • Colombia

  • Brasil

  • Argentina

  • Costa Rica

  • El Salvador

  • Peru

  • Uruguay

  • Nicaragua

  • Bolivia

  • Panama

  • Chile

For 3 days of digital media training, leadership skills building and mentorship, we will create the Future Leaders of Chicas Poderosas across the World.

As part of the training we’ll have some Stanford activities to take advantage of the venue where we’re holding the event. Having professors invited, from D-School, improvisation class, high performance leadership, interactive storytelling, Radio Ambulante and video workshops, social media strategy, among team building activities to make sure the local teams get all the know-how needed to role this event in their cities.

How will the money be used?

The number of participants will depend on how much funding we can gather, the goal would be to bring 30 journalists, so if we can get there, I'll make sure you'll be the first to know! Plus we will be flying outstanding mentors to give these group of future leaders the best training we can find.

Let's change the future of media in Latin America, one chica at the time!

Risks and challenges

Risk and Failure

By the time I am setting this challenge, we already have the leaders across countries in Latin America align to join this event as they can't wait to get this training and bring it back to their communities.

If I get the funding we'll make a great event. Now we are lacking money for food, accommodation and transport.
If we don't get the money I will use my own savings as I think being in this privilegiate position I cannot miss out the opportunity to share this access to information and knowledge to my fellow journalists.

Everyone is hoping that we can make this happen, so let's join forces and make it real.

My gut feeling is telling me we will make this come true!

"After a ten-year insurrection set in a nameless South American country in which the totalitarian government defeated a rebel group, the government has eliminated all indigenous languages and renamed all places as numbers; radio is the only remaining convenience. The protagonist, Norma, is the voice of a popular radio show that attempts to reconnect war refugees with their families. Yet Norma too has lost during the war: her husband disappeared on a trip to a jungle village called 1797. One day a boy arrives from 1797 along with a list of missing for Norma to read over the radio, jarring Norma to recall the details of her life with her husband and his possible fate.

Though the novel is set in South America it does not contain a single word of Spanish. It has been remarked for the ability to describe the people's sense of displacement]"
