Created during my own cancer journey, Dhremo Therapy IV decals are apothecary inspired adhesive decals for IV bags with uplifting messages to help patients mentally reframe chemotherapy.
As a healing “re-MIND-er” they empower cancer patients to shift from a mindset of fear and anxiety to one of healing and vitality.
Essentially one can infuse not only the body, but mind and spirit with a positive perspective during treatment. Because Chemo doesn't have to be a nightmare.
In May of 2014 I received the unexpected and terrifying news that I had stage II breast cancer. With surgery, four rounds of chemotherapy and another month and a half of daily radiation prescribed, I knew I had quite the adventure ahead of me.
I was determined however, to see this journey through cancer treatment as just that, an adventure, and one to be embraced, not resisted. After all there was enough fear around cancer itself. It seemed completely counter productive to be fearful of the treatment. Yet as soon as I was given my tour through the infusion room where I would be receiving chemotherapy, I knew I had to get my mind in the right place about this. It was cold, clinical and just plain frightening. I decided to resist feeling helpless and make this journey my own.
And so came my idea for Dhremo (which is what I chose to call my Chemo sessions). Harkening back to the days of apothecary medicine, I designed new labels to essentially rebrand and reframe chemotherapy infusions. It was my personal “re-cover-y” initiative and a way to stay positive. I stuck them on all of my chemotherapy infusion bags. Instead of looking up to see the terribly toxic sounding names, Cytoxin and Taxotere, I saw beautifully designed labels that read words like Happiness, Vitality, Light and Love.
Sessions became a meditation of sorts, where I was able to be in the moment and visualize what I really needed coursing through my body. And by shifting my focus in this way, I was able to embrace my treatment, lower my anxiety and truly look forward to these infusions. And... it worked!
During my treatment I shared these labels with my fellow cancer patients in the hospital, and saw first-hand how much their spirits lifted during chemotherapy. Friends and family who had seen my decals were asking for sets to send to their loved ones going through treatment. I began hand printing set after set on my home printer and giving them to anyone I knew going through chemotherapy. I found myself mailing them to people I’d never met, and thinking how wonderful it was to know someone would feel a little bit better about this journey they were undergoing.
Now that treatment is behind me and my cancer is in remission (hooray!) I want to make my labels available to more people.
Each set includes 5 decals : Love & Light, Vitality, Miracles, Clarity, and Hope.
A patient can simply peel and stick each decal directly onto the back of each of each of their IV bags (as not to cover any of the key drug or patient information on the front). Then, most importantly imagine, visualize, believe and infuse healing thoughts.
Every cancer patient is different, and treatment protocol varies, however typically a chemo round is about a 2-4 hour window of time that includes receiving several drugs intravenously, interspersed with saline flushes. I used 5 decals at each sitting.
When I was going through treatment many people reached out but were at a loss as to what they could do to help. Many kept saying to me, "just try to be positive! You can do it!" But minds will wander and in those moments when everything around you feels hopeless you need a point of focus to remember and redirect.
Dhremo is a great way to give your loved one a "vote of confidence" that they can not only make it through treatment but can actually use this time to connect, to reflect and to come out a better, stronger person.
Now that's way better than a casserole or a pink ribbon pin!
“Anyone going through chemo knows that the little things matter in a big way Dhremo lifted my spirits to see that "sunshine" and "light & love" we're coming through my IV! Thanks for making a difference during such a challenging time!”
- Brooke, Cancer Survivor
I know that the Dhremo Decals will help ease the minds and souls of the many who will undergo chemotherapy . By literally “reframing “it in a different and empowering light, you will help with the healing of so many. In my 20 years as an oncologist, I have not seen anything like this.
Dr. Robert Donegan, Medical Oncologist, GBMC
“As an Oncology Nurse Patient Navigator, I wholeheartedly recommend Dhremo for all cancer fighters! The innovative creation and sharing of these labels touched my heart, the hearts of the nursing staff and other patients. The artistic designs and words chosen were sensitive, inspirational, creative and at times quite humorous. The messages were those of hope, faith, love, courage, gratitude, joy, life, and positivity in the face of adversity.”
- Sharon Curren, RN, MS Oncology Nurse Patient Navigator
“Cancer isn’t just a physical journey. It is an all-encompassing mind, body and spirit journey. Dhremo labels empower you and all those around you in the infusion room. They are a wonderful way to turn chemo treatments into whatever inspires your heart: HOPE, STRENGTH, COURAGE. Dhremo allows you to dream the big dream . . . beating cancer!”
- Debbie, Cancer Survivor
You may be thinking wow, this is great, but I don’t have cancer, if I support this kickstarter what would I do with Dhremo decals? And I ask you- okay so do you want clarity, love or vitality? You don’t have to have cancer to benefit from these beautiful "re-MIND-ers". Imagine how refreshed you might feel if you drink Light & Love water every day! Here are a few uses for Dhremo for anyone and everyone.
Since November Dhremo has been available online at www.dhremo.com. In my first 24 hours I had 22 orders! But word is spreading slowly, meanwhile every day more people are receiving this terrible diagnosis. In fact, according to the American Cancer Society there will be an estimated 1,685,210 new cancer cases diagnosed this year in the US alone! That's over 4,000 a day! And approximately half of these patients will be prescribed chemotherapy.
I want these newly diagnosed "Survivors-In-Training" to know Dhremo is an option. I want Dhremo to be in hospitals around the world. I would like to see them carried in hospital gift shops and be available through infusion centers, social workers, wig and hair loss centers, and non-profit communities supporting cancer patients.
In order to do this I am raising money to put towards better production, marketing, and distribution resources. I'm also hoping to expand the product options for Dhremo so there are other designs and choices for patients.
If we reach the goal of $10,000, together we can:
- Produce a larger professional print run for distribution to individuals, hospitals, centers, and other support networks.
- Donate samples to non-profit organizations, communities and hospitals for cancer patients around the country.
- Conduct more research by supplying samples to hospitals to collect patient feedback.
- Develop additional marketing and promotional materials to raise awareness about Dhremo.
If we reach the stretch goal of $20,000 we can:
- Develop additional design collections, made-to-order customizable options and/or DIY label kits for cancer patients. I've already had requests, and would love to develop a children's line!
- Have a presence at various cancer and medical conferences to spread the word about Dhremo.
- Continue to spread our reach through additional marketing efforts.
- Raise more awareness globally, and make Dhremo available outside the US.
Dhremo is not only about giving forward to cancer patients and their families, but also giving back. It is my mission that a portion of all proceeds from Dhremo Decals be gifted to the cancer support organizations who have helped me and countless others through their treatments. Each year we will pick an organization to receive a charitable gift, so that together we can make a difference in the lives of many.
This year we are giving $1 for every Dhremo Therapy package sold to HopeWell Cancer Support. I personally have found a home at Hopewell and want to do whatever I can to help their mission! Not only have they supported me in my cancer journey, but they have been integral in helping me get Dhremo off the ground. They believed in me, gave me valuable feedback, and allowed me to run focus groups in their space with their amazing community. Thanks Hopewell!

Risks and challenges
Producing this Kickstarter is a challenge and risk in itself because if we don't reach our goal no funding happens. I felt it important to go with a platform like Kickstarter rather than a less risky (all or nothing, no rewards) platform because I want this to be an exchange, not just a donation. I want more Dhremo in the hands of people out there so I can have more feedback, raise awareness, and just have a further reach. I realize this cuts into capital that could be used for growth, but it also promotes growth in a different way. I have faith that Dhremo is supposed to be out there and that we will be funded.
I anticipate additional challenges as we grow. You'll see in my stretch goal that I have the hopes to develop an online customizable feature for Dhremo. I want there to be an option to design your decals to be personalized and fit your specific needs. This will require significant funding to develop and build an online platform, as well as a print-on-demand model which has additional cost and labor. I really want to make this happen, because cancer is a very personal journey. I'm really hoping we will gain traction to move in this direction so patients have this option.
I realize when you take on entrepreneurial efforts you can expect to hit challenges around every bend. The way I look at it, if I can do cancer... I can totally do this! Who's with me! :)Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
