About this project
There has not been any innovation in the flossing world since the 70's! In those days the introduction of flossers with handles allowed people to floss with one hand instead of two. Most people still find flossing both difficult and time consuming. It is time to change this and remove the hands all together with CrossFloss. The first ever hands-free flosser. A true dental floss revolution.
More than 80 % state that they do not floss regularly, even though the benefits of flossing are well known and backed up by dentists and oral hygienists. The excuses for not flossing are many, but most people say:
- I have no time
- It is technically difficult
- It hurts (gum or fingers)
- I forget to use it
- The string shreds and gets stuck in my teeth
CrossFloss is different. We have made thousand prototypes and over 80% of the testers say that it was surprisingly easy and pleasant to use.
CrossFloss is a completely new invention, significantly different from everything else in the market. Now everyone can floss, instead of making up excuses for themselves, and reap the benefits of improved oral hygiene.
To further clarify the implications of hands-free flossing, we have a proposition:
Let Your Teeth Clean Themselves.
What used to be a task requiring certain skills, time and priority, CrossFloss turn into a near automatic, invisible task.
CrossFloss is surprisingly intuitive. Using only the mouth and tongue to maneuver CrossFloss around in the mouth is the most natural thing, and just like chewing, you are in perfect control the whole time and will automatically apply the right amount of force. Actually, once you have tried it you will find that the unnatural thing is to use your fingers to floss in the first place.
The mouth is the most sensitive instrument of the human body, with an unparalleled combination of strength and precision. CrossFloss is designed to be safe in every thinkable way, from materials to the unlikely event of swallowing.
Using CrossFloss is more like chewing a gum, than brushing teeth or using dental sticks. Therefore, we enable oral hygiene in public space, transcending the conventional limitations of the bathroom. Mouth closed.
Because CrossFloss doesn’t require assistance of hands or mirrors to function, flossing can occur while doing other stuff. Driving a car, watching TV, typing on a computer, milking a cow. The opportunities are infinite.

Since the initial idea 3 years ago, we have designed and iterated various prototypes.
Some of the designs have been 3D printed to allow more hands-on (or hands-off) testing. We tested various sizes, floss strings and all kinds of different shapes.
All these designs and tests of prototypes have allowed us to optimize the size and shape of CrossFloss. This process has led us to file not only one, but two patents. The first patent is published internationally and the second is patent-pending.
We manufactured over a thousand prototypes and run user studies with great results. Our test-users were generally excited and are keen to start to use CrossFloss on a regular basis.
One of our testers was so happy he sent us the video below with the caption "Thank you for this" (in Norwegian). This is only after a few minutes testing (!)... Talk about easy to use!
We want to take this revolution to full scale production. We have the manufacturing and assembly-line designed with a cool solution for injection molding, floss string spool and break systems, cutting and packaging, but these machines cost money. We need funding to invest and set up this production line so that we can manufacture and deliver the required volumes in a timely manner.
The below animation shows one of the machines, the injection molding machine, that will allow us efficiently produce CrossFloss to everyone.
If you wonder what the mass-produced flosser will look like, take this one for a spin:
Risks and challenges
We have a good understanding of the risks and challenges that will present themselves through the campaign. We have been working on CrossFloss for several years now, and we're ready to take this big step.
We have a completely functional prototype, and our manufacturing channels say they are up for the challenge. As we are looking at a completely new 3 plane/6 string injectionmolding technique, we anticipate some challenges in getting all this up and runing.
