About this project
BFF or Die is an award winning tactical-action-puzzler for up to 4 players. When four alien flunkouts from the Intergalactic Time Academy go joyriding in a faulty ChronoCrosser, they soon find themselves trapped in Ancient Egypt, with nothing to defend themselves but cunning, cooperation and camaraderie!
To avoid the dangers that lurk in the labyrinths all players need to work together! Each member of the team controls a different ability - lights, decoys, teleportation and more; teammates must combine their skills strategically if they're going to escape alive!
Fun for one, funner for four. It’s the ultimate buddy cop movie! It’s no child left behind! It’s... BFF or Die!
“BFF or Die is just great fun, with compelling and rewarding multiplayer gameplay.” - Chris Kingsley, CTO of Rebellion.
"BFF or Die is one of those great experiences that connects two players with one purpose. Its like something snaps into place when you each work out what the other needs to do to succeed. Magical stuff!" - Oscar Clark, Unity Evangelist and backer #25
In the current public alpha demo we have: single player mode, local co-op mode for up to 4 players, one time period and 35 levels. It's a free download from: GameJolt | Itch | Indie DB for PC Windows, Mac and Linux.
Please remember this is an un-optimized alpha demo and not representative of the final game performance or content. Currently you will need a fairly good computer to get 60 fps. Having said that, it's great fun, especially when playing with friends, family or partners :)
We'll be able to add all the great new content we have planned if we are successful on Kickstarter..!
"Very original game ... can't wait to get my hands on the cool 3d-printed figures ;-) " - Johannes Kramer, backer #100
"...an indie game that will bring you and your friends much joy and bonding..." - Rupert Key, backer #51
BFF or Die will be coming to PC, Mac, Linux and maybe consoles too, depending on the success of this very Kickstarter campaign! We have been developing the game for over two years in our dedicated team of three. We've brought it a long way by ourselves and now we need your help to cross the finish line and release with all the content it deserves.
We've seen over 700 people play at public gaming events with overwhelmingly positive reactions and won a couple of industry accolades along the way. Players love the exciting and challenging gameplay and the satisfying feeling of togetherness. Both experienced gamers and people who rarely play games enjoy playing as a team. It’s an experience that brings people together and the perfect excuse to game with your favourite peeps.
The video below has player reactions from previous versions of the demo:
"Had so much fun playing this at Insomnia last year! Good luck guys!" - Rob Saxton, backer #21
"Played the Alpha with friends and it was hilariously fun :) " - Shanee Nishry, backer # 22
"Backing this game is saying yes to a happier, more inclusive world" Zidane, backer #34
BFF or Die has already been approved on Steam Greenlight so we can release it as soon as we are ready. We were really happy to see it Greenlit much faster than we expected in only 6 days :)
We're developing using Unity 5 which means it's possible for us to release on various formats. However, each console has a long list of technical requirements that are specific to the platform. How the online multiplayer works will also have to be adjusted to fit each console.
PS4. We have a Sony Developer account and BFF or Die already has preliminary approval to be released on PS4.
Xbox One. We want to release on Xbox One as well.
Wii U. We have a Nintendo developer account. We'd like to release on Wii U if possible.
The 1-player mode will have your brain cells engaged! Sometimes you’ll breeze through a level and sometimes you’ll have to try again multiple times using different strategies until you find the right tactics for that situation. Some moments are frantic, tense and exciting. Other times are relaxed and more contemplative.
Levels will typically have more than one solution and the strategic element is dynamic. You can often get out of a losing situation by changing your plan. Sometimes you think victory is imminent and then a surprise happens which forces you to react quickly to avoid defeat. A variety of tools and abilities are unlocked as you progress,
BFF or Die really comes alive in the multiplayer mode and this is where it shines. *Who* you are playing with is as important as *what* you are playing. The game mechanics are designed to make the experience feel shared. You rely on each other for survival. This creates a great feeling of teamwork and a tension that leads to fun and funny situations. People tend to talk, strategise, laugh, panic and celebrate a lot together as they play.
You can even share the keyboard and a control pad if you want an extra sense of togetherness. Or not. Your choice!
We’ve taken the game to many public gaming events and have noticed that groups of friends, families and couples love playing together. We know of one person who got a job after playing with somebody whose company was hiring. True story!
We currently have local multiplayer mode and this works very well. Succeeding on Kickstarter will allow us to also implement online multiplayer.
BFF or Die will be showcased at PAX Seattle by Intel.
Develop Conference is the biggest game developer conference in the UK. Each year they have an industry panel of judges pick 10 games to showcase. This year BFF or Die made it into the showcase!
The Square Enix Collective is a showcase site where a new and upcoming indie game is featured once a week. BFF or Die was featured in May!
We passed Steam Greenlight in only 6 days :) It was a nice surprise when we got the confirmation email.
We need you to support our Kickstarter campaign so we can bring the full vision of BFF or Die to life..! The demo is very playable but there are many things to add and for this we need your help.
Online multiplayer. This is the biggest feature we will be adding. It will take some development time and money to get this fully implemented.
Character design and graphics. We will have four distinct main characters with different looks and personalities. Overall we will spend time and effort adding more visual magic so the world and creatures we are creating look and feel great.
Content and level design. We will develop the content for different time periods, each with unique hazards, items to use, environments and challenges. The current demo has single screen maps. In addition to this we will have larger multi-room maps with more exploration. The theme of light and dark will also have variation and twists in different time periods.
Dynamic audio. We will create a new dynamic soundtrack that reacts to and reflects the current situation. Whether the experience is relaxed, tense, frantic, heroic, dangerous or victorious, the music will reinforce that feeling.
Mini-figures. When we go to gaming events people often say how much they like our alien characters. With that in mind we have been preparing a special version of the blue character that can be 3D printed. We will also be working on three more distinct characters and these will all be 3D printed. You can get them all in the Gold Status Collector Pack and in most tiers above this. We already have quotes on pricing from a 3D printing company, have made the first samples and know the shipping costs.
Early online access. For people who want to really shape how the game evolves you can get the Private Pack or any tier above this to get a private invite to the online multiplayer beta. We’ll listen to your feedback and this will guide our design process.
Creative roles. We have a variety of ways you can directly shape the game with your creative spark! Help us name the main characters and other story elements, design levels with us and even have your very face influence how the teacher character looks!
We are committed to making BFF or Die into an excellent gaming experience. For two and a half years we have made a big effort to self fund development because we believe in this game. Now we need your help to take it further.

Risks and challenges
Developing games comes with various challenges. Sometimes it takes longer to add certain features than you expected. Or sometimes tricky bugs take longer to fix than you'd like. Of course we will do what we must to keep development on schedule. Our lead programmer is very experienced and typically gives us realistic estimates for how long things will take.
Implementing online multiplayer is one of the most challenging features you can add to a game's development. With the support from the community who will have private and early beta access we are confident we can make it a silky smooth experience..!
BFF or Die has already been Greenlit on Steam so we can release it as soon as we are ready.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
