About

Something historic, radical and timely is happening on the streets of New York City (and around the world).

The Occupy Wall Street Protests and occupation of Zuccotti Park in lower Manhattan has created a community and a shared space where a diversity of people are talking about important issues - Social and economic inequality, corporate greed, and the inordinate influence of corporate money and lobbyists on our government. A healthy and inspirational dialogue is occurring and a physical presence that can no longer be ignored.

As photographers we see it as crucial to document this historic moment. The formation of this community with a common goal is unprecedented in recent times. Through this collaborative photographic project, citizen photographers are capturing the activities, the connections, the statements and awe-inspiring presence that people are making felt on our streets through this protest movement.

Mainstream media depictions and descriptions of Occupy Wall Street have been unreliable and unrepresentative, as happens when a media outlet looks through the lens of its corporate owners. Pundits and conservative politicians are writing off these protests as angry unemployed and "mobs."

We must claim this time for ourselves and depict this movement from the inside, so that we can both inspire and communicate to ourselves and others the importance of what is happening here. The visual documents that we make today will also stand as an inspiration to future activists and progressive movements as they carry forward the work of social justice.

In a spirit of collaboration, the Occupy Wall Street Photo Project is gathering photographs from all of the myriad photographers on the streets of New York City capturing this movement as it unfolds. These photographs will be collected and published in the form of a photographic book that documents the different elements and organizational nuances of this protest and occupation. This project will place these photographic images into a narrative context, bringing depth and insight to the depiction of this social movement.

A publication of this type has many inherent expenses. Many people are already on-board to collaborate on this project. Photographers are recording events each and everyday. A book designer has been approached. Then there is the work to bring all of this together, the printing costs and distribution.

If you can contribute to this project in any way financially we would be most appreciative. We are asking supporters to contribute whatever they can, small or large, to help create an important visual document.  This project is a volunteer effort: every dollar you donate will go directly to printing and distribution.

What do we do with the funding that's over 24k?
More books!!! More funding means we can print more books. You funding the project will make this happen (and gets you a book). Also, getting the books to physically exist is just step one. Getting them distributed is a whole new challenge. We plan to get creative with how we spread the word about the book, creating a social media event that you can also be a part of.

PHOTOGRAPHERS
Yes, we want to see your photos! We've set up a Flickr group to enable photographers to submit their images quickly for the project. Ideally your photographs will have a high resolution (300 dpi) copy available for print. Please add your best images to our group:
