We reached our goal! Thank you!
We still have 24 hours to go! Don't miss your chance at some great rewards and original artwork! Any funds above our goal will go towards publishing additional issue of Jason Coffee’s Warhawks.
WHAT IS WARHAWKS?
Jason Coffee’s Warhawks is a comic book series based on the writing of our dear friend Jason Coffee, a young sci-fi writer who died in 2008. It tells the story of the Warhawks, a heroic team of machine-enhanced soldiers who battle against their villainous cyborg counterparts, Maelstrom. As they clash, our heroes question their purpose and the morality of using lethal force to maintain the peace. If you're wondering what it's like, think Avengers & X-Men with a heavy dose of 1980's G.I. Joe!
Before he died, Jason was working his way up through the trenches of Hollywood. He was an assistant on numerous sci-fi televisions shows including Babylon 5 and Roswell, evaluated scripts for James Cameron, and had just written an episode of the documentary series, The Universe. He passed away at the age of 33, after surgery to remove a tumor from his brain. Jason was buried in a Spiderman t-shirt and a hat that simply said: WRITER.
Jason's last request was that somehow, in some fashion, his voice be heard.
That's our mission with this project...to begin fulfilling Jason's dying wish by publishing Issue One of Jason Coffee's Warhawks.
Character designs for the Warhawks. The main character (in red) is Jefferson Caesar AKA Weapon. The Warhawks reflect Jason's desire to create a multi-racial team of superheroes.
Character designs for Maelstrom, including their red-caped mastermind, Centurion.
Issue One tells the story of Weapon, the Warhawks' Field Commander, who must stop a pair of Maelstrom’s henchmen as they set out on a terrorizing spree, while struggling with his promise not to use lethal force.Headhunter, a former Warhawks team member, joins Maelstrom, bringing with him the inside knowledge to defeat his old friends. Meanwhile, Timothy, the wheelchair-bound son of Warhawks' mad scientist creator Dr. Pendragon (now in a robotic body that resembles a walking tank) becomes the Warhawks' newest member just in time to face Maelstrom's next attack...
CREATING THE COMIC
Jason left behind dozens of short stories and a stack of unproduced screenplays, including Warhawks. Too massive to produce as a feature film, we realized that Warhawks would work perfectly in Jason’s other beloved medium – comic books.
Brothers Todd and Wade Carney adapted the movie screenplay into comic book format. The story from the screenplay will eventually fill seven issues, but our first goal, and the purpose of this Kickstarter campaign, is to produce and distribute Issue One.
With the help of the amazing Marvel artist Billy Tan, who drew the cover, and his brother Mike Chiang, who designed the characters, Warhawks has begun to take shape. Joel Gomez, the former Wildstorm staff artist and assistant to Jim Lee, has signed on as the interior artist for Issue One and has already started work on the issue.

THE GOAL IS WITHIN REACH!
We want you to be confident that our team can deliver on our promises to you, and fulfill our mission. At the end of last month, with the help of Mark Roslan and Josh Reed from Aspen Comics, and also our artist Joel Gomez, we completed a 5-page preview of Warhawks for distribution at WonderCon in Los Angeles. This was a great dress rehearsal for the completion, printing, and promotion of the final book.
Over three days at WonderCon, we distributed 500 copies of the book and talked with hundreds of people about Warhawks. It was a great experience!
With your help, the Warhawks team can complete the interior artwork of the comic book, print and distribute issue one, and bring Jason’s vision to a wider audience in the form of comic book conventions, the website, and publicity. Every contribution helps get us one step closer to fulfilling Jason's last wish by sharing Warhawks with the world!
Risks and challenges
The biggest risk is that we don't have a famous creator or characters with a built in audience. We have to build our fan base from scratch. That's why we have turned to Kickstarter. We like that we can spread the word about Jason's life and work around the world while simultaneously raising funds for the project.
With your help, Jason Coffee's Warhawks can come to life.
