About

In celebration of the 40th anniversary of the ALIEN film, I have decided to undertake the task of building the full-bodied 1979 ALIEN Xenomorph creature in LEGO,  as well as create instructions for fans to follow in order to build their own Xenomorph skull. A few years ago, I meticulously crafted the existing bust (pictured  FlickR Album ) from LEGO bricks, and have displayed the creation at 2 LEGO fan conventions, Rose City Comic-Con, 3 Libraries, The Collins Gallery, and at Dark Horse Comics Headquarters. Countless fans of both LEGO creations and the ALIEN franchise have been enamored with my creation, and wished for the ability to build one of their own. Of many inquiries by wide-eyed onlookers, the number one question I recieved has always been 'Are you going to build the whole thing???', to which I always replied - 'Are you gonna help pay for it?'. I have also spoken with LEGO about the constant requests for submission as a LEGO IDEAS set, and their response was exactly as I had expected, a solid no. Although technically a Disney Princess by recent acquisition standards, the R-Rated nature of the 1979 film puts this model 'squarely' outside of the realm of possibility as an official set.

Well, after fielding a few serious interest for commissions, and many requests for instructions, the time has come to see if I can fulfill the overwhelming desire to see this beast stand tall and fearsome, in full LEGO form. So I ask you, the mighty LEGO and ALIEN fans of the world- will you help make this a reality?

I have mulled over the possibility of finishing this model in the years since the busts' completion, and the number one roadblock has always been acquiring the endlessly repeating black LEGO elements to construct this iconic movie monster. That's why, to celebrate the momentous 40th anniversary of the franchise, I am turning to Kickstarter for help.

With your support, not only can I complete the Xenomorph and unveil it at this year's BrickCon in Seattle, but I can also rework the model, both structurally and aesthetically. Using my evolved skills as a builder, and the exciting array of new elements that have been released in recent years, I can bring a fully detailed Xenomorph model to completion. In addition, I have been in contact with an experienced instructions designer, who will create a step-by-step guide, for those of you who wish to build the 'Big Chap' for yourselves!

Rewards include: Being AWESOME, personalized thank-you-notes, coveted instructions to build your own LEGO Xenomorph, and if all goes well... Super secret backer goodies down the line ;)

Stretch Goals:

2500 - A custom base for the sculpture, modeled after the Nostromo spaceship interior.

3000 - Motorized inner-jaw and opening mouth! As it is right now, the inner jaw extends and the mouth opens and closes, but only manually. With LEGO Mindstorms, I can add remote operated, or automated motion to the skull (for display model, initially, possibly as a backer-exclusive additional instruction pack)

3500 - Poseable arms! I will double my efforts, and engineer the arms to reach out in front of the sculpture to emulate terrifying scenes from the film!

4000+ ...The sky is the limit... ???

I look forward to celebrating the completion of this magnificent model with you, and sharing the skillfully sculpted representation that this cinema legend truly deserves with the world!

Risks and challenges

As an experienced LEGO designer, I am aware of many of the possible challenges ahead. I will have to completely rework my proof-of-concept, in order to complete this model. Thankfully, the menacing task of replicating the skull will stay mostly the same, however there are some aesthetic upgrades I hope to add.

The first challenge will be creating a technic framework that can support the weight of the rest of the model. Using an extensive skeleton of technic beams, I will have to carefully balance the detailed exoskeleton around the internal armature to ensure sturdiness.

Designing the tail will require an enormous length of flexible tubing, which I may or may not be able to order as a roll from LEGO directly. In the event that a considerable, uncut length of the official LEGO element is unavailable (I hear they order it from a supplier, themselves) I may have to substitute a similar 3.18mm tubing to accomodate the model, rather than stitching together pricy and shorter lengths of available tubing.

Translating the model into fan-buildable instructions will also add slight difficulty, to ensure that end-user backers can build their own versions at-home in an enjoyable manner. Thankfully, the designer I am partnering with has worked on many projects and with the advancements in digital building programs of late, assures me that this is possible, and that the timeline is achievable.

Sourcing elements for the project can be expensive, and time consuming. I have continued to gather parts over the years, to hopefully build commissions, or expand upon the project at a later date, but MANY more are needed. Should I come up with a large enough number, I may be able to place a project support order with LEGO directly, but I will likely need to source parts from many different sellers in the online marketplace to achieve my goal. Budgeting for this is why I have set my minimum fundraising at $1979, to help ensure that I can afford the elements needed, plus shipping costs. Obviously, if the project is even more successful, I can have extra freedom to source specialty parts, and place more varied orders to get the best deals on elements throughout the marketplace.

Meeting the deadline is always a daunting task, but this fundraiser helps ensure that I have the time needed between now and BrickCon (my self-assigned goal) to disassemble, catalogue, design instructions, enhance, and build the fully-formed version in time. A HIGHLY successful campaign would allow me time off of work to dedicate extra hours for the project each week, ensuring the most building time, and least stress, as the project continues.

I have also set a couple of exciting strech goals, which will be challenging, but super cool. Many fans wonder if the jaws open and the inner-jaw extends on it's own - so I do think that adding motorization would be a fun gimmick. I also know that adding articulation for the arms could help achieve some nightmarish poses, but also *poses* ;) it's own challenges - including balance, structural stability, and time spend in the design phase.
