About this project
You've had enough. You're deciding to quit your job and leave everything behind to start living on your own in a small village. What would you do first? Find a job? Invest? Or just wander around the town in hope to meet someone? It's up to you!
River Town is a single-player rural-themed Role Play inspired by the classics, such as Harvest Moon, The Sims or Rune Escape. In River Town player comes into possession of a farm, and can populate his little rancho with a variety of animals, pets or crops. The town is settled by villagers with highly contrasting personalities, making the game an engaging combination of farming and social experience. What is unique about River Town is that player can create their own script about what they want to happen, with whom and when. Every action a character does affects not only him but all people around as well, which might lead to some crazy stuff!
In River Town there are so many things to do, that we decided to split the features into few categories.
- Crops - Choose from a wide variety of plants (fruits, vegetables, flowers) and trees to populate your farm. Some of them are required to be seeded only at a certain season, while others need a hothous.
- Animals - Buy, feed, breed and take care of your farm animals.
- Pets - Several pets to take care of. Some pets have special functions - dog, for instance, might help you with keeping wild animals away.
- Weather -Weather makes impact on the life of the town. Some people might prefer to stay in in the rainy days, for instance.
- 4 Seasons - The game has a regular 24hrs/day system (faster than in real life though). Each season is made up by ~30 days (spring, summer, autumn, winter), whereas each of them brings a different set of features to the gameplay.
- Fishing - Go fishing, then sell your preys or keep the fishes in your own pond to grow.
- Villagers - Every single person living in River Town is entirely unique and introduces different storyline. Some villagers might find you inspiring to change their behaviour and goals, some might try to avoid you, while some others even attempt to stalk you if they are extremely amazed by your person. They behave differently towards you as a stranger or a best friend, so take that into account. The point is that everyone is entirely different and reacts differently to certain behaviour, which makes a great contrast of personalities.
- Non-linear story - Storyline and dialogues depend on your input to the game. It means, that the story can progress in quite different direction than to someone else, making the gameplay unique. Player can contribute to the conversation by choosing an answer from a drop-down menu. Also, there is no right or wrong answer, you decide how to shape the game story.
- Date & Marry - Finding a second half is a strong part of the River Town storyline. You can date, propose, marry, live together and finally raise a child.
- Festivals - Each season brings a set of different festivals organised by the town population. Participation in these might be a great chance to integrate with villagers or win precious prizes.
- Events - Every day in River Town brings something new to the story. Even simple activities, such as going to the bar or a clinic may end up with affairs, friendships or arguments. It is designed so there is always something to do when you're outside of your farm.
Explore & Design
- Character Customisation - Change player's appearance, clothes, accessories.
- Expand your home - Refit your house and add some functionalities, such as kitchen or baby room. Buy a TV, furniture and accessories.
- Cooking - Discover new meals by watching TV series in your TV or experiment on your own. Serve your dishes for a dinner, share it with others or participate in cooking contests.
- Many locations - Plenty of various locations: markets, shops, square, clinic, church, tavern, forest and many more.
- Mushrooming - On the outskirts of the town there are plenty of goods produced by the nature. Every season brings a different set of goods, so youll never come back with empty hands.
- Plan - Every season rises demand for certain crops. It is important to track the market through the TV or newspaper to plan your crops andsurvive fruitless seasons.
What makes it different?
Game Design - The game is designed thoroughly with the highest attention to detail. We aim to provide a true farming and social experience through audio & visual effects, 3D animations and deep dialogues.
Freedom - That's our favourite. River Town gives you a free hand on what would you like to do, and how you want to play. Possibilities of River Town fall far beyond farming, giving you a freedom to experiment, try and error.
Unpredictability - Our main principle is to make every single day in River Town special. Every in-game day might bring a new adventure, relationship, gossip or argument.
Devil is in the details - There are many features not seen on the face of it, but believe us, they make River Town more deep and engaging. Few instances: sending letters to others, hiring people to help you with your farm, getting drunk, working part-time and much, much more.
Please note: Many of the assets used for the screenshots or the video are placeholders for an actual art. These will be replaced by even more stunning models along with further development. River Town is currently in pre-alpha stage and does not exhibit full quality of the final product.
While meeting an initial goal will be enough for us to finish the game, we would be very happy to make it even better by expanding its functionality. We've prepared a list of exciting features, however, due to the budget limitations, we couldn't implement them all with basic funding (although we'd love to!). Higher funding will allow us to engage more talents in the project, and make the game even more deep and immersive.
Some of the stretch goals are dedicated exclusively to our backers, allowing them to submit their ideas and participate in voting for the features they would love to see in the game. With that said, everyone can contribute to River Town and be a part of this lovely project. It would never happen without you, after all!
Bring the apple to our little hero!
There are a ton of people in River Town. All kinds; from normal to average to psychopathic, and players do not know right away what each person is like. It’s not like they have a sign on their back. That would be too easy. Players have to figure it out by noticing their actions, what they seem to like, and how they react to events. Player communicates with villagers by selecting a certain answer from a drop down box. What is really trick about this part is that the same answer might affect two different persons differently, as each of the characters is unique in his own way. If you expose to one of the characters, they might not like you, and that could lead to some consequences. We're not saying it's bad! You're in charge and you decide which people are closer to your heart, and which ones deserve a slap in a face. And don’t forget that people gossip! If you insult one person, for instance, he might feel a need of sharing this fact with others he likes a way more than you.
You can think of River Town as one big Novella or Soap Opera. With so many crazy characters around, players never really know who is who or what might happen. This aspect of River Town makes the game fun and unpredictable. It also makes it pretty addicting. So be sure you have a lot of time to play River Town. You are going to want to be around!
Here are some characters that might be encountered in River Town:
Of course there are girls to date in River Town, but they are not so easy to get. It takes dedication, consistency and respect. A player who is interested in a girl has to first get to know their personality; and this is done by carefully observing and keeping track of how she responds to others as well as the player. Once you feel that your relationship is mature enough to propose, go for it. The girl, naturally, can choose to accept or reject the proposal. (Are you starting to see the drama that can exist in River Town?!). But take into account, that there are other guys that might be interested in your crush as well. If you won't perform well towards your sympathy, she might assume that you're not the one she wants to be with, and look towards your competitors.
William Shakespeare said "If music be the food of love, play on". We couldn't agree more. It is no doubt that music plays a special role in gaming - it defines mood, feelings and describes the world around us without a single word. As we are aware of the importance of audio experience, we've established a partnership with exceptionally skilled composer Rafael Krux, who has impressive experience within game audio sector.
Rafael Krux - River Town (Theme Song)
The premise of River Town involves a young man who has become disenchanted with modern economic life. He works for a large company in a large city and has no other life experiences to speak of. His current job is depleting his sense of self and he is often taken advantage of his superiors. He decides to leave this all behind and live on a farm. Who wants a job that kills the soul anyway? Not this guy. He’s a fighter and he’s determined to find his existential freedom.
When he arrives at River Town, he is faced with the fact that he really has no idea what to do. He has no experience caring for animals or plants. He soon discovers that farm life is not easy. However, he is determined to find his way, and proceeds to create a life for himself on his own terms.
Message behind River Town
What is really neat about the storyline, is that it represents the economical situation we have nowadays. Many people (mostly young), allow being abused or underpaid and suppress their hunger for success just not to lose what they currently have. We believe that in everyone conceals a great potential, and the only reason why it is not freed is their lack of courage. River Town tells a story about a person, who have managed to do the first step. Your turn is to make the next ones.
Players are provided with seeds for all kinds of stellar stuff: vegetables, fruits, or flowers. Players can buy these seeds at this totally hip local market place in River Town. Players can interact at the store, equip himself with a bunch of seeds and stock up for winter. Seeds are planted on players’ own farm, watered and harvested. Then, crops can be cooked for their own food, sold to other villagers or given away as gifts. The challenge is that players have to plan what to grow at the correct time of year and care for it well enough for it to grow. Plants which players have planted can be ruined by weather, disease or by animals. Thus, there is strategy involved in planning and maintaining the crops on a player’s farm.
What’s a farm town without animals, right? So River Town has every possible animal any player could ever want on a farm. Want a pet? We got a couple breeds of dogs and cats. Want a horse? We got that too. But here’s the deal with animals; they need a ton of attention and care.
If players get distracted, or are distracted by things that happen in River Town, their animals can croak. So, players have to really be on the ball. They have to plan to feed, exercise and take them to the vet when needed. And they have to do it on time, or the animals won’t produce as much or as well. In other words, if a player decides to forget about his cow, the milk won’t be as good and won’t sell for as much. Now, if a player takes excellent care of their animals, there is a possibility for them to breed!
River Town rocks as far as places to go. There are literally a ton of places player can choose to go to such as bars, taverns, shopping, squares, schools and more. Players can meet and integrate with people in an effort to meet new friends, or to improve relationships that were damaged beforehand. Some locations are hidden, while the others are private and require permission of the owner. Exploring all of these will take some time, since some of them "unlock" at a certain point of the game. The fact of having so huge map in River Town guarantees you hours of amusement and always new stuff to discover.
While it is true that River Town is an awesome place, it is similar to earth in that it has 4 seasons. Each season lasts about 30 days. Certain seeds can only be planted in certain seasons, so a player has to prepare and plan to have the money to purchase the seeds on time. The prices of items and seeds also change during each season based on demand. Thus, if a player can, they want to plan in advance and have all they need for the winter while the prices are lowest in the summer. Food also has to be managed so that villagers can live through the winter.
River Town is prone to all kinds of weather; from rain to sun to blizzards. Weather affects player’s routines, which affects communication and tending to the animals and crops. Weather is a huge factor in River Town. It can be sunny, raining, foggy or snowing. Weather can be a threat or an opportunity, depending on what a player wants to accomplish. Probably the biggest impact is that it causes many villagers to stay inside. Therefore, players have to plan how they will react to certain weather patterns.
River Town is a party town! Yep. Every season comes with different excuses to party called festivals. Festivals provide opportunities for villager to meet and greet, to build relationships, to spy on others and to just have some fun. They also give villagers a reason to go to locations that are not usually part of their daily routine. What is really slick about festivals is that a player who attends one may win a prize or be granted an opportunity. So it usually a good idea to plan to go to these River Town “raves”. The people of River Town celebrate all kinds of different events; New Year's Eve, Valentine's Day, Boy's/Girl's day, just to name some of them. It gets really crazy in River Town sometimes!
Developing a game ain't a piece of cake. It requires tons of energy, time and money. While the first one can be solved with a large espresso, the latter ones are a bit more complicated. So far, River Town was just a hobby project and was funded only by ourselves. Unfortunately, a game of this size needs a lot more than the spare money we were trying to save. Furthermore, we also have our day jobs, which makes the development a bit more complicated. While we truly love how the game is progressing and we don't regret a single day spent on it, we were limited to work on the game only during our spare time.
Kickstarter will allow us to jump over all these obstacles and focus entirely on River Town. Reaching the funding goal would make our dreams happen; we'd be able to work on the project on a full-time basis and dedicate all our concentration towards the development of River Town to bring you the best farming experience ever.
Once again, we want to take an opportunity and thank you for your contribution to River Town. This project has a special place in our hearts, and we strongly believe, that once it is released it will find one in yours too.
River Town is a project developed to kickstart Tweense. Tweense is a small, independent game development studio founded by Konrad and Kasia, a couple based in Glasgow, United Kingdom. Yes, we are together and although we do argue about who's making a coffee sometimes (actually, every day), when it comes to game development, we act as a one entity.

Risks and challenges
We are totally stoked and excited about River Town. It is a creation that has come out of years of thinking about it and it is a project of love. So, yes, we are gaming geeks looking to make something new, but we are also trying to send a positive message.
Since the game introduces so many characters, variables and locations (not to mention so many platforms), thus implementation of all of these will take some time. The game will be eventually released for desktop and mobile systems (tablets), however, the mobile version might be released a bit later than its desktop counterpart, as it requires huge optimisations and entire GUI redesign. And although we'll try to get the game as soon as we can, our principle is to deliver a GOOD game, where quality can never be sacrificed in favour of the time.
With that said, we are committed to being completely transparent about where we are in our progress. We have planned for regular updates and newsletters to be sent out to all stakeholders and open an public forum for all the people interested in the project, so everyone knows exactly where things stand.
We have considered this project carefully and are fully equipped (either by education or experience) to tackle any difficulties.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
