About this project

Next year our elementary school is being renovated and our staff and students are going to be displaced to other buildings within the school district. Not only is our school community going to be disrupted for an entire school year, state budget cuts have really impacted funding of the arts programs. I have really been thinking about our students being spread out, the school community being disrupted, and the lack of supplies necessary for funding unique art experiences. My project proposal involves having a "gallery showing" of student art work, one mid-year and one end of school year, with students working toward having one piece to display at each gallery exhibit. Funding would be toward unique art projects that typical funding does not allow, with a specific focus from each grade level. The first gallery preview would be focused toward fall and winter art projects. The second gallery event would be a culminating event celebrating the end of a long year and celebrating the fact that we would be back together again the following year.

The focus of the first art exhibit event will be "art from each continent", with each grade level focusing on the art and culture from a particular continent. Each of the continents will be represented. The focus of the second art exhibit would include school community as a theme. In addition to the unique artwork created by our students from all grades, students in grades 3-5 will be working on student book publishing project throught the year and will have the chance to share their books and illustrations in an authors' conference. They will create a poster "advertising" their book at the event and books will be available for viewing.

The funding for this project will go directly to the students and will fund a variety of integrated arts projects, helping to purchase supplies needed for my "art on a cart" situation. I will have very little set up time and the rooms in the buildings that we are going to be placed in have no sinks and are quite primitive. Finding unique materials to allow me to travel from building to building would allow students to have more than just "paper and pencil" 2-d art experiences. This opportunity allows for 100% participation, will provide us with 2 benchmark school unity events, will tie in the curriculum for meaningful art experiences, and will help to showcase the importance of the arts to those who create the school budget. Publishing the student art catalog for the events, purchasing specialty supplies for the student art work such as rubbing plates, specialty paper, and easy to use specialty products will need start up funds, however the project will be able to be sustained for years to come. A small part of the supplies purchased are consumable, but the majority of the items that will be purchased will sustain the arts and valuable art experiences for many students years after our displacement year. One extra goal if enough funding is raised beyond the target for this project will be student created custom art tiles that will be displayed on the wall of their newly renovated building once it opens again the following school year. Those students will be memorialized on the wall of their new school building.

Funding this project will allow me to get this integrated arts program up and running and help our students feel some sense of unity and community during our year of being displaced. I also plan to feature hands-on art experiences for those who attend the events.
