Funded! This project was successfully funded on June 29, 2012.

A collection of stories about near futures, possible futures, and impossible futures.

Stretch Goal Updates:

Since we've met the funding goal of $1,000, and the $1,500 and $2,000 goals, here are the next levels:

-$2,500: I will do a live video streaming (using UStream) interview about writing, crowd funding, the collection, life, whatever you guys would like to ask questions about.

-$3,000 will unlock custom interior illustrations. Since we passed $2,000 and look likely to get to this mark, I've reached out to a handful of artists. As soon as the particulars are sorted, I'll reveal who they are.

-$3,500: I will release to backers a custom eBook of a single fantasy short story originally published in a limited print run anthology called Speculative Horizons in 2010. The story is On The Eve of the Fall of Habesh.

What is Mitigated Futures?

Mitigated Futures is a brand new collection of short fiction that I'm hoping to bring out to my readers. Ten science fiction stories about the oncoming future, each of them representing a possible glimpse of what might be around the corner. These stories previously appeared in places like Clarkesworld Magazine, The Year's Best SF, Subterranean Magazine, and in various anthologies. They deal with the future of war, our climate, and technology's effect on our lives.

Now you can get them all in one collection.

Because the stories are already written and ready to go, the moment this Kickstarter is wrapped up, you'll get the eBook delivered to your inbox the day it finishes. Instant gratification!

The Table of Contents:

1. A Militant Peace (written w/ David Klecha)

2. Lonely Islands

3. Mirror, Mirror

4. Press Enter to Execute
5. Mitigation (written w/ Karl Schroeder)

6. Resistance

7. The Universe Reef

8. Placa Del Fuego
9. Love Comes To Abyssal City

10. A Jar of Goodwill

About the project:

I'm using Kickstarter because I know many people don't want just an eBook of the next short story collection. So by pre-ordering copies, we can create an awesome limited edition of the book.

But that's not all. We can do some really cool things with the eBook as well. I'm going to be putting in unlock codes. What are unlock codes? Well, if we raise a certain, overall amount of money, I'll be unlocking rewards to make the collection even cooler. Things like custom illustrations and also adding new stories to the collection.

Unlocked rewards!

The first 50 backers of this project will get a digital eBook of my previous short story collections Tides From The New Worlds and Nascence.

The first unlock reward is $1,500: if we raise that, I will add forewords to each story talking about how it came to be written, a behind the scenes look at what was going on as each story was written.

The second reward is for $2,000: if we raise $2,000 I will write a brand new story just for the collection.

And at $3,000? Well, I'll start posting those once we start unlocking the prior ones. Yes, mystery! But let's just say, that's when things start getting... visual.

Mitigated Futures

This will be a unique project. You can pre-order the collection, and the moment this Kickstarter closes, get a reward. Sure, you could wait for the book to come out for the same $5, but by pre-ordering, we can can build a collection that's even cooler, with new stories and interior art, as well as limited editions for the bookshelves.

Let's have some fun!
