Who am I?

My name is Joseph Henson and horror films are my lifeblood. I grew up in the Chattanooga (and greater) Tennessee area, exposed to horror films at a very young age. It was The Hills Have Eyes (1977) that turned me onto the slasher film particularly, giving me a desire to frequent video stores, swap shops and the like to get my hands on as many titles as possible. In the late '90s, I became an obscure but respected name with my first horror-themed website, The Diabolical Dominion, and later (in 2001) I formed The Bodycount Continues, a slasher-themed discussion forum that still stands today. Although a relatively-small site in comparison to giants like Bloody Disgusting and Dread Central, The Bodycount Continues has gained a loyal, cult-like following. Not just content with giving like-minded individuals a place on the web to discuss slasher films, I joined up (in 2011) with author Justin Kerswell (Teenage Wasteland), journalist Erik Threlfall and lifelong friend Nathan Johnson to form the wildly popular and first of its kind all-slasher podcast, The Hysteria Continues, which has a following of over 10,000 unique listeners every month. I continue to discuss my past favorites and upcoming projects through these web-based outlets, and have since aspired to be an independent filmmaker, delving into marketing, visual effects and finally writing and directing my very own film(s), drawing inspiration from classic slashers like Black Christmas, My Bloody Valentine, Prom Night, Just Before Dawn, April Fool's Day and many more.

What is The Night Before Easter?

Summary: The night before Easter, a group of friends gather together inside a storage facility that is closed for renovations for a private place to cut loose away from the discerning eye of authority. When one from the group decides to scare his friends with a fake story about a killer who targets people on Easter weekend, he has no idea that a mysterious psycho is listening to his every word and decides to take inspiration from his tall tale, turning the fake story into a blood-soaked reality.

Having discussed the sub-genre to death (no pun intended), I've always wanted to make a slasher of my own but there have been many roadblocks in reaching that goal (I won't bore you with the excuses). Suffice it to say, my lifelong friend (Nathan Johnson, also a co-host of The Hysteria Continues) and I decided it was time to not just talk about these films but to make them - no more excuses. We must have went through several ideas before we finally said to ourselves, "We love slashers. They are simple but effective in the right hands, so let's make a tried and true bodycount film." Many slashers utilize a holiday theme, from Black Christmas to Halloween to even bad luck days (Friday The 13th). However, we came to the realization that no one had made a typical slasher film with a psychotic killer in an Easter Bunny costume (edit: days after coming up with the idea, we discovered there was an Easter-themed independent slasher in production but we decided to go for it regardless as the tone of our film differs greatly), and thus, with a few ideas tossed back and forth, and having access to a truly creepy locale, we decided to pit a group of teens against a wacko in said costume.

What is our goal?

If nothing else, our only real aspiration is to make a film that is fun. We tend to lean toward slasher films that feature a wide array of affable characters with little to no mean-spirited flourishes (i.e. endless torture porn and hateful characters). If I had to pick a single film to model our project after, well, I don't think I could, but I'd say three that come to mind in a sort of murderous melange would be the creepiness and overall bone-chilling nature of Black Christmas, the wham-bam bodycount of My Bloody Valentine and the good-natured likeability of the characters from April Fool's Day. You know what? Let's make it four: Prom Night, which has, pound for pound, THE greatest chase sequence with the "Wendy" character being chased around the high school, deserves a spot in there.

Some people have said that horror fans make the worst horror filmmakers, but we hope to prove that saying wrong. We know what does and does not work in a slasher film, we have extensive knowledge on production, editing, writing, directing, etc - all we want to do is leave our mark on the slasher film world, and if this takes off, we'll continue to make more slasher films.

Why should you pledge?

If you're reading this, chances are you're here BECAUSE you're a slasher film fan, so why not be a part of one and throw in a pledge? You're not just throwing your money away to a couple of schmoes who want to take a video camera and make a cheap distraction over the course of two days; no, this is a real film with real sets, real actors and a really extensive shooting schedule. Above all, it is our dream to bring this film to life, and we couldn't do it without the fans. You also have the chance for great incentives when you pledge: movie credits, merchandising, and various other perks we've listed via "rewards."

So, what are you spending your Kickstarter money on, exactly?

We have a very, very small budget right now, and while we could take what tiny bit of money we have, video tape some non-actors and call it a movie, we've decided to supplement our budget and make a real movie instead. I'm not going to make such a claim that our film will be this gargantuan achievement of small-budget filmmaking, but we do know what we are doing, and after going over what we need to accomplish such a task, we set a modest goal of $10,000. We truly feel we can not only accomplish a fun slasher film with that sort of funding, but it is our top priority as well. So please, if you're financially able, dig deep into your pockets and help two guys with a dream to make a fun slasher film. If you can't pledge/refuse to, spread the word to every Tom, Dick & Harry out there!

The income raised via Kickstarter will go toward the standards, such as special effects/makeup, costumes, props, film equipment and making sure our actors are fed during production.

What can we expect to see here during production?

We are in the process of making behind the scenes videos, we're working with an outstanding artist to create a retro-styled poster/video sleeve, and we will keep you updated on anything else that pops up during production on our Facebook page. We recently added a teaser trailer (be kind, we filmed it on an iPhone in the span of thirty seconds) and plan to make a REAL trailer very soon.

In closing...

Thank you all for your continued support and especially those who believed in us enough to pledge. It means the world to us and we will do our absolute best to bring you a quality product.

Risks and challenges

Creating a FUN slasher is our top priority - it's our dream! Having said that, we feel confident in our ability to tackle any obstacle that may arise in the pursuit of this dream. And if this project does not reach its goal, you will not be charged.
