Raven's Dojo Book One is finally finished! 188pgs! 5 issues collected! All new-print exclusive Covers, Comics, & Guest Gallery!
And here's a more detailed video if you'd like..
Who is Raven Perez?
I make comics! I both write and draw the webcomic Raven' Dojo (NSFW). I've done some work for Keenspot, but was doing Raven's Dojo webcomics since 98' before that and making Rodney and Dornail comics (the stars of Raven's Dojo) since I was a child.
And Raven's Dojo is?
It's a naughty, comedy, actiony comic! A comic done in the style of issue based funny books. 32 pg issues. Story Arcs. It's a webcomic for print comic fans. It stars Rodney (Earth's Mightiest Moron) & Dornail (Supervert Dragon) two world famous heroes who have been completely erased from the memories of mankind. They'd be perfectly happy playing video games and ruining the lives of Sarah Lee (their sexy room mate) and Raven (their master) at Raven's tropical island dojo... but the secret history of Earth just won't stay buried!
But NSFW comics aren't my bag!
I'm not gonna pretend. There's naughtiness sprinkled throughout Raven's Dojo. However, the phrase "immature content for mature audiences" says it best. Raven's Dojo has always been about dumb fun. The sexual content present is always played for laughs. Think.. South Park.. or for webcomics, Menage A 3 or Oglaf. That said, it's definitely part of the book and I want you to use your best judgement if that's suited to your tastes.
I'd like to try before I buy...
You can read the entire book ( the first 5 issues..and much more!) completely free online at Raven's Dojo.com. The only thing you won't see is the print exclusive content and guest art gallery created specifically for the print edition of the book.
Can I preview some of the print exclusive content?
Sure! I'll be posting some previews of the strips this week! Here's the first one:
So You're FINALLY making a book! Why will this be AWESOME?
Raven's Dojo was always designed for print! So as a result, many readers have waited a LONG time for this. The main reason for the wait was I knew when I finally did it I wanted to do it right. This is no mere collection! Here's why it's gonna rock yer socks off.
--Read the comic AS IT WAS INTENDED! The design and even the comic's pacing have always been meant to be enjoyed in print format. It's what I grew up with and love the most. I think when you read it you'll see the difference!
--6 Sweet NEW Covers! Online, Raven's Dojo is in issues, but the issues never got proper covers. I worked super hard for the last year to make the covers extra special. Even pushing myself to learn new tricks like with the photo cover where I used sculptures and a tiny set or the Red/Blue 3D pinup! I wanted fans to have a real treat to reward them for getting the book.
--10 Sweet New Comic Strips! I created 10 new black and white strips (4 panel gags) just for this collection. They focus purely on humor and the day to day life of the dojo crew. Maybe it's vain to say, but I was crackin' myself up drawing these. They're day to day dojo themed dumb fun at it's finest!
--All new GUEST ART by an army of awesome artist chums! I wanted a fresh slew of dojo art for this so I hit my talented pals up and was quite surprised by who hit me back! Just wait until you see the talent I've got for the back of the book!
Got some book specs?
Sure! Here! Have some specs.
*7" by 8.5" dimensions
*Uv coated pages
In other words.. this book gon' print real purty.
How Far along is the book?
The book is ready to go! I worked for most of 2012 to ensure I'd be finished with my book BEFORE I started my kickstarter. Even if I don't move the 2 $1000 dollar slots, I have content to fill those pages. We are just awaiting funding, then we start the print process!
When can I expect my book and/or stuff?
Digital PDF's will be sent to you immediately when the kickstarter is successfully funded and finished! My current target is to have the books and rewards shipping out within a window of mid May to Early June 2013. To err on the side of caution I've placed reward dates at June 2013 although obviously I'll start shipping as soon as those books are in my possession!
Why will the book arrive in May/June 2013 if it's already finished? What's the timeline involved?
The print process is quite long even on a finished book. To ensure absolute quality, I'm facing 3 weeks of proofing to make sure everything's printed and trimmed properly . I'm printing internationally so the month of February will have no production during that time due to a holiday. A month turn around to print the books(March). A couple of weeks shipping (April). It adds up fast! When you consider fundraising won't be finished until closer to mid December and the time needed afterwards to receive the funds the time line is nearly a month (meaning I don't even have money to start work till January 2013) it makes a bit more sense. My printer is an international printer recommended to me by my fellow comic authors. I've received samples of their work and I'm EXTREMELY HAPPY with the quality we'll be getting! Their excitement for comics and emphasis on quality were crucial to my decision so I think it'll definitely be worth the wait. I'll keep backers up to date on the printing progress every step of the way!
Let's talk rewards!

The big wally reward! The king banana! Funny book immortality! It doesn't have to be a fighting pic or even necessarily Rodney or Dornail. We'll work it out. But the big reward is this pic WILL be printed in EVERYONE'S copy in the pinup gallery in the back! AND in future editions!
COMMISSION CONTENT NOTE: The commissions at the $1000 dollar level will be printed in everyone's book. That means we have to be more considerate of everyone in regards to content. If you have any doubt feel free to ask me what's acceptable.
COMMISSION FULFILLMENT NOTE: The commissions have to be finished BEFORE the book can go to press! That means I can send you a digital copy long before you receive your physical copy!
The reward upgrade video explains a bit more about the reward upgrades!
So Why does making this book matter?
For one I've always wanted it to exist as a real book. I want readers to experience it that way! But that aside, I want to really ramp up my convention activity. Meet some readers!! Hopefully I can get on the road and hit a con near you! Without books it's MUCH HARDER to make conventions profitable or even possible as I just lose too much money attending.
How's the money being spent?
Phew. I know that's a lot of dough! I'm aiming for 2000 copies. This book's larger than most digest comics. It's also full color. Printing alone will take the lion's share of it! But then there's also the cost of reward fulfillment materials (i.e. munnys, yarn, etc) and shipping. T-shirts Creation. Taxes. Fees. Astonishingly, there's going to be ZILCH left over when everyone's done with their cut. My "profit" will be having the book of my dreams in mass quantities so I can start selling them online and at conventions.
And if we surpass our goal?
In that case, I'll unleash the STRETCH GOALS! Obvious things to improve the quality of the book like spot gloss on the cover, book marks, more pinups from guest artists. We can also get outside the box like with some 3d glasses or something. There's a ton of great things we can do!
What if we don't hit our goal?
No one is charged a thing! And the book doesn't happen. I'll drink tears and feast on sand hotdogs.
What's International Shipping?
Easy peasy. Just add $12-15 dollars to your order! The amount is displayed under each donation level.
I have no money but still want to help!
Oh man. You rock so hard. Thank you! You can tell your friends and pals. Spread the word via facebook, twitter, deviant art, smoke signal, can on a string---Whatever it takes! That's going to be tremendous! If you're REALLY feeling helpful you can hang some flyers out locally in your area! I made print quality flyers which you can get download and print out either from the updates section on this kickstarter page or here:
I still want to know something...

Risks and challenges Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
I wanted to make sure the book was finished BEFORE I started the Kickstarter so the lone risk in this project comes from the time frame caused by the print process itself. There are quality checks and proofs involved that are mandatory and can't be done until after the Kickstarter is successfully funded. The possibility exists for delays, but that's it. It's not a question of IF the project can be accomplished. It's a matter of HOW FAST it can be accomplished. I'll work to keep everyone in the loop of what the latest news from the printer is every step of the process!
While the risk for delays for fulfillment of rewards including creative work (i.e. commissions, and munny customization) is a possibility, this is quite remote. All I need to create these rewards is time. Upon my Kickstarter's successful completion I plan to begin creative work right away while awaiting the completion of the print process. This gives me months to complete the creation of the rewards. The limits in place for the higher tier rewards are to ensure I'm not taking on more work than I can handle. Even if every single high tier reward were to sell I will be able to easily handle the work load in the span of time required for the book to print.
Have a question? If the info above doesn't help, you can ask the project creator directly.
