My name is Gerald Zugmann. For decades I have been a photographer, who specializes in architecture.
Besides that I am very much fascinated by landscapes
and also very much interested in the architecture of plants.
For a couple of years this has been my main focus and I started building spaces and landscapes in my studio.
I work with an analog large format camera and develop all gelatin silver prints myself in my darkroom. Working in the darkroom is of great meaning to me, and as Ansel Adams used to say: „The negative is the score but the print is the performance. “
My broad analog archive which has been increasing over years is the source of my new book project, which is ready to go to the printer. Unlike my other publications, this book will not be an architecture book und no landscape book, but a sort of an artist book. Its title is Flaneur.
Why ? Because I was like a Flaneur strolling through my archive to choose these 171 pictures. I took them out of their context and put them together in a new way.
The book - here you see a dummy – will be divided in nine cahiers, each of them with its own cover, all combined to one book (quite a challenge for the book binder and believe me, it was not easy to find one who accepted the job).
At the cover of each cahier you will find a quote, which will evoke a certain emotion by the viewer, like this :
Hubertus von Amelunxen, an internationally recognized philosopher of photography wrote an essay, in which he himself as the proverbial Flaneur, walks through the cahiers and the pictures: He delineates, he associates, he reflects and he interprets providing a new reading to the perception of my images:
- “While observing and reading these cahiers of the flaneur we perceive each image and leaf through the book as if strolling past rows of houses and buildings, through woods and landscapes, and we are brought to a halt repeatedly by interiors, models, sculptures and masks, the only faces we meet along the way; through the gaze everything attaches to a walked life. Gerald Zugmann is truly one of those who goes “botonizising on asphalt”, to borrow the words of Walter Benjamin. (…) Gerald Zugmann is an architectural photographer; his whole life long he has been photographing buildings, by many different architects, Coop Himmel b(l)au for more than three decades, but also by many others from Austria, Italy and America. This is the first time that the flaneur is showing the broad field of his photography, including and beyond architecture. It is being shown as this particular flaneur’s impressions, far from any purposefulness and commission. In keeping with the physiognomy of the flaneur, the photographs become the path, forming passages through which we also can now walk. His photographic works on architecture, his light openings, broad horizons and darkly opaque built counterparts, stipulate a rhythm for his picture-walk, as do the Californian or Irish landscapes, the masks reminiscent of a memento mori, or the construed natural setting of wilted blossoms.”
Besides an edition limited to 500 copies (€ 85,00), we will produce a special edition of 30 copies (€ 280,00) – each comes with an original silver gelatin print and we will have a luxury edition of 8 copies (€ 880,00) with two original silver gelatin prints and one fine art print. These 38 copies come with a slipcase, each of the luxury edition individually designed.
We’ve worked on this project for more than 2 years and we have already invested a lot of money to make it happen. I am hoping to raise at least € 6.000 through Kickstarter.
This sum will insure parts of the high bookbinding costs of the book, which includes 262 pages and 172 mainly black and white photographs.
