Hey Ho! Look at that! We did it! And we have time to spare...Dang, y'all are so good. Now, I have never been one to rest on my laurels, not me. I want it to just keep on going until April 7th 10:11. More money means more dogs to draw, more stories to tell and more rescue groups to help. Keep 'em comin', I can draw and draw and draw some more. And, I thank you!
UPDATE: Oh dear friends and new folks who have already pledged; We are almost to the goal..To say we are thrilled is not enough! This project is very dear to us. I also just want to let new visitors to the project know that pledging beyond the goal will serve to make the book bigger and better. It will also ultimately help more rescue organizations. There is no limit to the number of dogs I will draw!! So please continue to share and let's do this together!
THE PROJECT: My project is to create an book, illustrated with my scratchboard drawings, of rescued dogs from around the country. It will include a small photo of their people as well as brief stories about them. I want to use this book to share their positive stories with my quirky folk art interpretations of the dogs based on the owners photos. It will also contain information about the organizations that rescued the dogs in a directory in the back of the book.
Hi, I'm Linda Sheets and in addition to being a full-time professional folk artist, I also do a lot of pet sitting. Many of the scratchboard illustrations in the video are dogs I've taken care of, or have known and drawn in the last 10 years or so. I love taking care of dogs, most of them are pretty willing and wonderful subjects for art too. My friend Fay Barclay who is co-author, is very active in dog rescue groups in the Houston/Beaumont TX area(and beyond). She posts photos almost daily of her dogs and shelter dogs on facebook. One day, I asked her if I could draw some of them. She said, 'Of course', and then, an idea was born. I thought, If only I could make drawings of these dogs and others, and put them into a book. And then, that book could be used to help dogs and the rescue organizations, by sharing their stories and images with the world. Well, I decided to take the leap and do it. Please, help me make this a reality.
I will be working with a local professional designer who will help Fay and I put this all together into a very sturdy and attractive 6"x9" paperback full color book, printed in the USA. My goal is to be able to offer it to various rescue organizations at cost to use as a fundraising tool. If this kickstarter campaign raises more than the $5,000.00 it's possible that the books could be offered to them for even less. I'm also thinking of future calendars, note cards and other spin off products that could be used in fundraising. In additon, this book will be available on Amazon.
I'm not looking to make big bucks with this project personally. I just want to make the art, and hopefully make a difference in some animals lives. This is a way for me to get better as an artist, and to give back to the dogs and organizations that take them in and find them homes. If this project is successful enough, the next book will be cats and their people!
As always with Kickstarter, if I don't raise the full amount in the alloted time, it will not fund. I hope it does fund in a big way, I won't turn down any dollars or dogs beyond the proposed amount. That just means the book will be bigger and even better! There is no limit on how much money to raise, or how many dogs I will draw! $5,000.00 is the least amount I need to get this project rolling.
With that in mind, here is the proposed schedule:
This part ends in 47 days. I start rounding up all the dog photos and stories in April/May.This means, if you choose the option (pledge) of having your dog in the book I will need from you: A photo of you (with or w/o your dog) a brief (120 words or less) story about the dog, you, or the rescue group. Positive, fun and heartfelt is best, but I'll let you tell it. This will be on the left-hand page(see video). Also I will need an additional photo or photos of your dog. Head shots, or view from above, more unusual is best. This is the one I will draw from. You will send to me in jpeg version via email. If you have more than one dog, yes, I can fit all of them into a 5"x7" board, so it's not necessary to pledge twice (unless you want individual pages/artwork).One or two per 5"x7" board seems to work better design wise. And having it vertical rather than horizontal is better too. See most of the drawings in the video for examples. Make sense? If not contact me with questions.
The scratchin' begins around the 1st week in May thru mid July. This will depend on how many dogs total. The original estimate I have would be for an 80 page book. That would be about 30 dogs. With about 30 pages for stories(each 120 words or less) and people, plus rescue directory, table of contents and so forth. Right now there is no limit on number of dogs or pages, it all depends on the response. I'd love to do double the number of pages, or even more. In fact, more is better. That's a lot of scratchin', but I'm up to it. All the copy and artwork goes to the designer in August (again, this may change depending on response)and to print in September/October. Then there is a pretty quick turn around and they should be ready to ship out to you in October/November. I will post updates on a regular basis so you know step by step how things are going.
Budget wise most of the money will go to the designing, printing and shipping of the book. There's a little bit set aside for my materials and a cup of coffee for me now and then so I can keep scratching. I'm happy to share a detailed breakdown of costs, just ask.
Now, let's say you don't have a dog right now, but you want to help in a big way. You can sponsor a dog at the level to have them in the book. Find a neighbor, friend or relative and ask them to give photos and stories. Or ask your local shelter or vet if they have a 'mascot' dog that they would let you sponsor.
I'll keep all y'all posted on status of this project here and on my blog at Scratching Through.
Feel free to comment or ask questions about this project. I really need your help to make this happen.
You can see some of my work at my website Blue-Eyed Pony Studio.
Shipping is included on all the rewards, unless you are in Alaska, Hawaii or International. In those cases, it will be an additional $10.00
I will not force any of you to have your picture in the book. We could put a picture of your dog, your mother, or a landscape in place of you...no worries. This is going to be fun, right? I JUST WANT TO DRAW YOUR DOG! The dog and the story is the important part here. And, oh yeah, your pledge, however large or small.
Well, we are on the honor system here. If you purchased your dog from a breeder the short answer is no. The long answer is, I know a few folks who 'rescued' their dogs from puppy mills. So, I'm going to say use your own judgement. You could 'sponsor' a dog with your pledge. Pure breed or mixed breed, all are welcome.
