So we've been in development since July 2017 when I originally had the idea for a men's ondemand app.
Why just for men?
Well, there are a lot of women's apps already on the market and without using price as a competitive selling point, I realised there wasn't really much point in creating another app 'just because'.
In November 2011 I was diagnosed with stage 3 cancer and later BRCA1. In that year that I was being treated, I saw how much more support, funding in and awareness of women’s cancers and health issues there was out there. Which is amazing – I’m pretty sure my mum would’ve survived in 1994 had there been this level of support and awareness at the time.
Since recovering from this awful disease, I’ve lost several friends and family members to both cancer and suicide – most of them being male.
I feel that over the years, the subject of men’s cancers and general health is being talked about more openly and we’re seeing more support through fundraising campaigns and press articles.
The boom of the male grooming industry is partly to thank I think for this progression – there is a direct link between self-care and heightened awareness and confidence in our own wellbeing.
For me, developing this app has been a real eye-opener – I’ve had many interesting conversations with our prospective users and feel the demand for this is definitely out there.
Just this month, we were shortlisted in GQ Magazine’s 2019 Grooming Awards in the Best Wellness Experience and came out as ‘Highly Commended’.
Our database of subscribers is growing and our iOS app launches on 1 November in London.
Over the last 15 months, we have established relationships with a network of prospective future partners in the form of male grooming product brands, male-specific health charities and several educational facilities dedicated to training talent, ready for work in the health and wellness industry.
Our focus is to bring grooming and wellbeing for men to the growing ondemand market, whilst helping raise awareness in this arena and make the service as accessible as possible.
We want to expand our platform to include Android users.
We’d like to grow throughout the UK and internationally.
We want to create more opportunities within the MINT Team in multiple locations for individuals to do what they love – whether it’s as one of our MINT PRO barbers/therapists or digital/creatives.
We’d also like to use our platform to highlight the importance of self-care and wellbeing within a demographic that statistically is most prone to illness and death.
Risks and challenges
So, with that in mind, the pledges you make will help to fund further tech development, recruitment costs and sponsorship opportunities.
Our main challenges at the moment are manpower – with all the growth plans we have, our team is too small to carry those out at scale in our present form.
Our tech, accounts/legal team and gift certificate platform are all outsourced and our barbers/therapists are fully vetted (for insurance and DBS checks) and employed on a freelance basis but the rest of the workload has been carried out by a mighty team of one (yes, me) since the beginning.
Additional funding in the form of your pledges will, literally, give us a kickstart to move this along to the next phase and hopefully secure some awards and raise awareness for the cause!
The majority of our pledges are centred around services and treatments we offer through our app and website platforms. The iOS version has already been built and is going through the final stages of testing. We are already set up to facilitate all the pledges listed here and currently have over 150 MINT PROs on our team who are ready to go.
The biggest risk is that you do not receive a barber/therapist at the exact time or date you have requested and in that case, we would offer an alternative time/date that works for you with a promo code to use for another booking with us – all pledges made are valid for the treatment/service to be received within 12 months.
