About

You've heard of the Elf on the Shelf and maybe even The Mensch on the Bench but have you heard of The Peacock on the Rock?  Do you like mythical creatures? Well it's about time you hear this magical peacock's story.

The concept was born after another holiday season of delights brought to my children by the visiting elf on the shelf.  While I loved the way my children engaged with this adorable creature, I was also intrigued as to whether or not a similar creature could teach them about Indian tradition and yogic values.  Ah, ha! The peacock was born as a creature who visits from India right before Diwali, the festival of lights.

This mythical creature will explain the yamas and niyamas (yoga lifestyle guide) to young readers and well as demonstrate yoga postures.  For example, aparigraha translates to not hoarding.  The peacock will explain aparigraha by showing an illustration of a child sharing a toy compared to a child who is clinging to objects unnecessarily.  There will also be phonetic breakdowns of the original sanskrit to help linguistic development in children.  The source devanagri text will introduce characters that form the sanskrit language.  This book will be fun, simple, easy to read yet packed with educational insights about yoga and sanskrit.

I liked the Elf but I knew that yoga ethics are more important to me than any religious values.  I want to introduce young audiences to living well and emphasize the value of giving and taking care of the earth and its bounty of life.  Christmas brings joy and togetherness, however, at times it can create a wasteful materialistic environment especially for children.  The Peacock on the Rock demonstrates giving because children are asked to symbolically "feed" the peacock a few grains of rice each day.  This concept develops character in young children by teaching them to care for the others and be open to giving.

While the book will increase awareness of the celebration of Diwali, the festival of lights, it is important to realize that the peacock is a visitor of any religion or no religion at all. He or she is there to share the wisdom of yoga to anyone.  While the interactive component of the book would occur with the suggestion of the peacock visiting 9 days before Diwali (the Indian festival or lights), the story itself has no set dates and can be enjoyed year round by children of any faith.

The funds raised via Kickstarter will be used to cover the costs of the first production run of at least 500 books.

The funds will also cover the development and production of the paper peacock that stands upright that visits the children.

The progress on the project is as follows:

The concept is complete.

The paper Peacock prototype is complete.

The manuscript of the book is complete.

Several of the illustrations guides are complete.

With the funds from Kickstarter, my next steps are to:

Illustrate the book.

Complete the package with the Peacock insertion.

Complete an initial production run of 500 peacocks and books.

Market the book.

Ship the books and peacocks to the US and into the hands of children by Diwali this year!

Risks and challenges

The greatest risk will be to market the book effectively. Being a former web designer specializing in search engine and social media marketing, I should be able to personally market it or find the right team to get the book out there.

Another challenge is the interactive element. Since the peacock is also a small "toy" I will have to replicate that as well (the prototype is already created). Eventually I would like a softer more realistic plush version of the magical peacock.

All in all, I feel confident that I am the right person to bring this bird to flight!
