About

We intend to create a high quality sequel to our successful YouTube short, "Dayz Day-Zero". This Kickstarter project helps us realize this by funding better quality equipment, more in-depth characters and story, a larger cast, integration with the DayZ YouTube community, and more. Please take a moment and read on below or check out our website to learn more about our project. We feel there are many exciting enhancements and additions which will enable us to delivery a high quality and entertaining short film. Shooting and production will begin as soon as we've reached our funding goals. If all goes well, we plan to deliver the final short in August.

Thank you for your time and donations!

 The Teaser

"Day-One Crash Site" is the sequel to our first DayZ inspired short, "DayZ Day-Zero". We'll be continuing our story with the survivor and hero after their encounter with the bandit. "Day-Zero" was made back when the game only existed as a mod. Consequently all the character costumes were based on the ones found in that mod. The sequel, however, will introduce new characters based on the standalone version, making this story a crossover from the old DayZ world into the new one.

As the hero and survivor travel through the wooded wilderness of Cherno, they spot a Huey flying out in the distance and headed to their location. As it moves overhead, the chopper stars to spin widely, smoke spouts from the overstressed rotors, and the helicopter crash lands in a nearby clearing.

The experienced hero knows how dangerous a crash site can be. He and the survivor carefully make their way to the wreck and scout the location. An infected crew surrounds the smoldering debris. He knows that every survivor and bandit will soon be after the high value loot that found in the wreckage. But, in desperate need of the supplies, he makes a calculated risk to move forward.  The Huey is close, and the hero believes they can get to the crash first, loot it, and make a clean getaway. Stealth and speed is critical. Low on ammo, and in desperate need of the supplies, they are in no position to get into a gun fight.

The hero crawls quietly through the tall grass, hoping not to be spotted by the infected. But, as feared, a nearby gang of heavily armed bandits also spotted the crash and made their way to the wreckage. They emerge out of the treeline. They open fire. The sound of bullets crack overhead. The hero and survivor scramble to take cover as the clearing erupts into a wild and chaotic free for all of heroes, bandits, and zombies. As we know, the hero and survivor are outgunned, outnumbered, surrounded, pinned down. All hope looks lost. But, wait, what's this - An incoming radio transmission from a nearby Huey?!  It's Mr. Chow and Mr. Moon! Are they here to help? To grab the loot for themselves? Or eat everyone? Find out...

SPECIAL GUEST APPEARANCES

The DayZ youtubers are a big part of the DayZ universe. So we thought it would be great to try and incorporate them into the sequel if possible.

Popular Youtubers Mr Chow (BlizzHD) and Mr Moon will be making special guest appearances in the sequel! We're very excited to have them on board. They will play the voice rolls of the Huey pilot and gunner. A very entertaining duo. Whether teaming up, or running solo, these 2 are sure to entertain. If you know DayZ, you've probably heard of Moon and Chow. If you've never seen them in action, be sure to check out their Youtube channels! Watch! Like! Subscribe! Help us reach our funding goals, and find out what happens when the hero and survivor meet up with Moon and Chow!

What's the money for? Well, we intend to really boost the production quality. We made our first short as a fun little side project. We had no budget and paid for all production costs out of our own pocket. It's gotten a lot of views on Youtube, and a lot of positive comments. Many people have suggested that we should make some more, and we decided to make a sequel. However, this time we wanted to take it to the next level. We want higher quality video and audio, with a bigger cast, more action...and all while staying true to the game. We shot a teaser with the limited resources we had to give you a taste of what we had planned. But we want to go a lot further...

4K RAW VIDEO

Our first short, DayZ Day Zero was shot on a Canon T3i. It's a great little camera, but we're upgrading significantly for the sequel. The teaser was shot on a Canon 5d Mark III. The completed short, "Crash Site", will be shot with a Blackmagic Production Cinema Camera. This camera shoots 4k raw video.  We'll have much higher resolution images, and shooting raw means we'll also have a greatly increased dynamic range. The image quality will be vastly superior to that of a DSLR which shoot compressed HD video. The higher quality Blackmagic footage will be a huge benefit when creating the CG effects shots. Lower resolution video with compression can sometimes cause difficulties with green screen keying and camera tracking. The higher resolution footage will allow us to get better green screen keys, better and more accurate camera tracking for integrating cg elements, and result in more seemless and believable visual effects integration overall.

Shooting in 4k raw video requires a LOT of storage. And that storage can get expensive. We've already bought the camera, so the big expense has been covered. But some of the budget will go to upgrading our pipeline and gear to support the new camera and a full 4k raw video production.

COSTUMES, WEAPONS, PROPS

One of the things people commented on about our first short was how we stayed true to the costumes and props you find in the game. We intend to do the same with the sequel. Since nearly all the items in DayZ are based on real world object, it's fairly easy to find what we need. But, with a cast nearly 3 times as large as our first project, the budget for wardrobe, weapons and props for Crash Site will start to add up fast. We've already go some of what we need for the teaser, but more will be needed to equip the entire case for the final production.

PROFESSIONAL AUDIO

The audio side will also be getting a big upgrade. We'll be investing in a professional library of sound fx so we'll have all the proper sounds, and they'll all be high quality. We'll also be licensing more professionally produced epic sounding music. And...to make sure it all comes together we'll be getting an audio professional to do the final mix so the final video will look and sound great.

MAKE UP EFFECTS

We had money for real make up effects for the infected in our first short. The infected had to be digitally enhanced in Photoshop. And then the newly-painted faces had to be tracked back into the footage.

This effect was restricting in the shots we could use, and time consuming. For the sequel, we want to have practical make up effects for all our zombies so no work is required in post production fixing them up.

We've done a few makeup tests, and with funding we'll be able to do a much better job matching the look of the infected from the game.

CG SPECIAL EFFECTS

Our first short had limited special effects. The sequel, however, will require quite a few. A fully CG Huey will be needed for both aerial shots and for the crash site itself. Green screens will be used to integrate the CG crashed Huey into the live action video.

To make it look convincing, we will need a very good, very detailed model of a Huey. For the teaser I used a lower resolution model than what I hope to use in the final. The existing model will either need to be enhanced, or replaced altogether. The model will then need to be painted to match those you'd see in the game, and a crashed version will also need to be created.

We'll also have an action packed, chaotic gunfight. CG shells and muzzle flashes will need to be added.

BUT WAIT, THERE'S MORE!

Achieving our funding goals will not only allow us to complete the sequel, but it will show there is enough interest out there for more videos. And if we make the sequel, we'll have all this DayZ gear and costumes laying around. No sense letting it go to waste! We're working on putting together a short web series. A successful Kick Starter campaign for Crash Site will be a good first step in helping us to start moving forward with plans to try to put together a live action DayZ web series! But first things first...help us reach our funding so we can start shooting "Crash Site"!

Risks and challenges

Since this will be shot outdoors, weather will be a possible challenge and there is a risk of potential delays due to bad weather. We are located in the northeast. There is the distinct possibility it may never stop snowing. The again, I hear Namalsk is lovely this time of year...

We also have day demanding jobs which can have crazy schedules at times, and may cause some of our deadlines to shift a bit.

We hope to be as efficient as possible and minimize these risks.
