About this project
Uncle Andy is a documentary film about the iconic artist Andy Warhol that is unlike anything that has ever been seen before. Filmmakers, Abby Warhola (Andy’s great niece) and Jesse Best capture a rare portrait of Warhol by members of his very modest family - the Warholas. It is sure to rock the art world with an intimate side of Warhol, far removed from the counter culture scene of the infamous ‘Silver Factory.‘ The late Paul Warhola, Andy’s eccentric oldest brother, a chicken farmer turned artist is the highlight of this film project along with his many nephews and nieces. Their personal stories of Andy will surprise many who thought they may have already known Warhol. With a family like this it is no wonder that Warhol became the most influential artist of modern time.
Andy’s family were with him from his very beginnings in the smokey steel-mill city of Pittsburgh. They witnessed firsthand his unprecedented transformation from a humble son of a working class family into the world renowned Pop artist that he became. Here he is pictured on the porch with his family in Pittsburgh in 1944.
We are a couple immersed in the world of art here in the city of Pittsburgh. Besides working on this film project day and night we also make our own art through photography, painting and film. In an uncanny way, we also gain inspiration by living in Andy Warhol’s childhood home. For more info on our work and daily routine follow us on Instagram and Twitter:
We have been documenting the Warhol family for years. It is raw footage that tells a story of Andy Warhol that is unprecedented. We hope to capture a few more key interviews from family members who are getting very old. We also would like to incorporate animation sequences into our film for many of the childhood stories the family shares. Along with a great soundtrack we think our film will complete the biography of Warhol and be absolutely enlightening and entertaining to all who will see it. It’s a story that deserves to be told from the inside out rather than what’s been done before in the most obvious way.
It should be first mentioned, though we are part of Warhol’s Family we have no connection to Warhol’s Estate nor the Warhol Foundation and Warhol Museum. Our family remains as blue collar as most but with the unusual happenstance that an incredibly talented artist emerged from its brood. This film project is a loving attempt to preserve these precious memories. So far we have financed this endeavor with our own money and energy. We’ve now reached a point of needing financial help. Your support will help transform this project into a feature length film. Kickstarter is the ideal format for keeping it an independent, family-produced film. We think Andy would have loved Kickstarter and used it for many of his own projects.
